Boiler Testing

I intend to start building the boiler for my Clayton next year. I realise it should be tested for safety reason, even if I wont be running the wagon much in public. The logical people to test it being a local model engineering club. Apart from having to pay for a years membership I cant always fit my plans in around there test dates. Has anyone had a boiler tested in the Lincolnshire/ Yorkshire area other than via a club.

I don't know your area, but if you do manage to find a commercial tester to provide a meaningful certificate for your boiler, then I think that you will find the cost considerably more than club membership. In addition, the tester might be rather more demanding in terms of inspection requirements during the building process.

Clubs provide testing as a service to their members and the testers themselve volunteer their time.

My advice would be to pay the, probably modest, membership fee and join in club activities. There's much to gain.

Hi David

I can and do test model steam boilers on a daily basis. Please feel free to get in contact with me, based in Burnley.

+1 for joining a Club. "Free" boiler testing is not the only benefit.

Whereabouts in Lincolnshire?

Peterborough Society of Model Engineers carry out boiler tests for members, on certain dates.

For more details, take a look at the website.

No doubt, many other clubs do as well.

Thanks for the advise, I know the club is the most logical choice but its timing I found difficult before. I used to work shifts and missed the boiler testing day. The tester wasnt very helpful and wouldnt put himself out for another test day. I will put feelers out for now, maybe the local club have a more understanding boiler tester now.
