Thread: Boiler issues juliet
04/06/2019 19:25:44

Recently purchesed a boiler with a juliet chassis the boiler threads on the backhead for the regulator gland are knackerd.

Studs could be made and ive mad up a dummy set to test this idea and seems it will work ok, now the problem is silversoldering them into place as there is soft solder caulking directly above on top of the boiler shell so puts silber soldering out the question really for the most part.

Could i use a good compound like steam seal and screw the bronze studs once there made in ising said compound to seal them in place the temp trial ones i made up screw in tight with no wobble.

Im mainly wanting the loco for at home with an odd steam up in the garden on blocks etc, i doubt il get a chance to join a club after loosing my licence due to health reasons and can no longer freely get anywere with oit alot of hassle.

So public running is not on a list of things to do so idealy for now need to pass a home hudrulic and steam test for personal use and gain.

This model has been a major help in getting my health back on track for the last month or so and dont want to give up now but as stated dont have the means to get to somewere for helpbto rectfy the problems of the boiler, so having to go it somewhat alone to be able to enjoy it for myself.........

So a effective but simplish repair is whats needed to get me back on track.

Hope you may have a sugestion or advice

Thread: Wheel spacing 5" gauge

hi can anyone help me please iv recently picked up a 5'' guage rolling chassis that im building as a petrol model now the issues i have are with the wheel spacing..............

i have attached a pic with my measurmants and the difference i get and i have found out by the looks of it that its built to the 4 11/16 spacing wheel back to wheel back and was wondering am i going to run into many issues with the discrepancies in the wheel spacing

i have converted it all to metric as the imperial function on my vernier has stoped working.............

on the cheltenham society of model engineers it states 4.687'' i make this with the power of google 119.048mm

on wheel set 1 i have a back to back of 119.19mm so a differance of (0.140mm)

on wheel set 2 i have 119.00mm so i belive close enough

on wheel set 3 i have 119.24mm so a differance of (0.1902mm)

4 5/8 standard works out i belive to 117.47mm

and

4 11/16 works out to be 119.06 so this is by the looks of it the standard it has been built to

are the wheel differances going to cause me alot of probs

am i going to have to start the axles and wheels again or am i likley to be ok......................

any more info needed il try my best

Thanks for all the help on this one guys
Thread: Boiler tests comercial or club
22/02/2016 19:45:20
Hi in need of getting my boiler tested on my pride of penthyn steam wagon its a winson version boiler dated 1992.....

Is there more benifits about a comercial boiler inspector as i dont drive a car getting the model to a club is not easy and i assume they could come to me?

2. From what i can gather a boiler certifacte is only valid whilst you are a member of that club due to differant reassons a club is not ruled out but not overly practical for transport reasons.

3. Would a comercial boiler certifaciat give me more flexibility in terms of insurance for rallys etc.

And finnaly any ideas how much it would cost for both tests to be completed.

Thread: Just exhausts
08/12/2015 00:00:51
Yh its a pride of penrhyn wagon and got it in september the valves had alot of play before thy got to the block between that and the valve nut. So im thinking instead of sealing they were or one was getting liffted of the face and exhausting the preasure straight up the chimney il get some pics up as soon as i can
07/12/2015 19:49:51
Hi tried my modwl on air today and all i get is the preassure straight up the chimney thru the exhaust ahen i olen the regulator i have checked the timing and o e side was slightly of so tht adjusted now per instructions for forward gear.

Reverse gear dosent match up with anything to be honest massive port openings so dnt quite understand how to sort that.

The valve blocks them selfs have a lot of clearance in terms of before they touch the block itself i know they have some free play before so the preasure seals them against the block.

But obv this is not happening and so i jus loosing all the preasure up the chimey.

Can anyone please help me with some susgestion as to what to try as im loosing all hope with it now.

Thread: testing on air
07/12/2015 06:40:43
Has hydrulic test steam nus run out a month or so ago the model itself is around 20 years old and had a leak from the reg chest due to leaking gasket and gland but i just wanted to see it running to make sure the cylinder had no more leaks.

Only ownex the model for a few months but being on a first floor flat and it being a 2 inch scale wafon not the easist of things to get up and down so air indoors is a much better solution till nxt year
06/12/2015 23:13:02

hi just got my wagon back togethor today after the gaskets in the cylinder needing replaceing due to drying out ove the last 20 ish years.

would like to test if the engine runs ok as i have not had running since owning

would like to run on air due to livving in a first floor flat so steam is certainaly not an optin.

the model came with an adapter for running on air to be connect to a pipe.

the main question is is it ok to connect to a water clack to feed the air in to the boiler as there is no other place it can be put to also is there anything to watch out for while running on air. genneraly would it need less air preassure then steam or normal working pressure?

many thanks mike

Thread: Is there a limit to model size?
01/12/2015 17:20:10
Hi are any steam road models able to be registerd for the road in particular a 2" scale size model?

Also if at all possible would it have to be a comercail boiler inspector or would a club inspector be enough to get to correct insurance in place?

Many thanks mike
Thread: Winter overhaul
24/09/2015 17:42:02
Hi have recently picked up a pride of penhryn but it does not quite hold preasure leaks are from the regulator gland so a quick strip of the reg chest has reveled that the gland meterial is completly missing and the gland nut its self is badly worn so will be making a new one.

The main things i need recomended are being the fact its around 20 years old what other parts are worth checking? It was sold as running but the reg cant even hold 20psi as the leak is that server so defo needs a winter rebuild.

So advice on things to check would be very helpfull it does currently have a hydraulic certificate but the steam has run out last week.

Thanks mike
Thread: top feed and pumps
08/04/2015 10:28:50
hi jason do you mean a tube on the inside of the boiler so that it then deposits the water below water line?
07/04/2015 21:41:27
hi managed to aquire a boiler for my project but is fitted with 2 TOP FEED clacks and not the usual side mounted will this be a major prob as i have read of this postion being used in full size boilers on the net its a marine style boiler if that helps.

also roughly how do you work out pump size and injector size im guessing the injector you just turn on as required and im planning on using a modifyed hand pump as an axle pump plumbed straight up to one off the clacks

Thread: Just out of curiosity is there a too big in feed pipe
04/03/2015 17:18:23
just out of curiosity could a feed pipe to a cylinder be to big? Ie; a cylinder of 38mm bore and a 50mm stroke.......... feed with a 1/4" pipe would this be suitable?

Obviously I understand it would prob depend on usage requirement but on a genral idea how would it suit.

Thanks for your input

Thread: clack valve position
14/01/2015 16:22:59
So I was wondering clack valves for water inlet on most loco boilers etc are along the centre line of the sides of the boiler tube....... now I read that they can also be put as a top feed along the centre line along the the top of the tube say on a horizontal marine boiler.

Is there any benifit to one way or another as long as there kept away from the firebox end

All explainsons welcome

Thanks mike

Thanks mike

Thread: buying an unknown boiler
05/01/2015 18:26:20

Ahh thanks for the reply Jason this is were of could work quite well for me because my cylinder doesn't mount directly to the boiler but needs a pipe from the boiler to the cylinder so that could work quite well and as to the steam dome well that should fit as well with just cutting one simple hole in a plate on the model.

ThThe only problem I for see from the pics of the boiler is that the safety valves would need putting side by side to suite the model I'm building

This is the boiler in question would be suitable for me as is my guess would be that it was designed to be gas fired what do you reckon?
05/01/2015 01:42:48

Hi I have come across for sale a boiler that fits my requirements pretty well question is it has no cert or plans with it............... How much of a problem would this be for getting it tested could it be reversed engineered to show this?

I'm looking at it as it would save me a lot epensce I can't afford its a simple marine style boiler 150mm od tube 32 8mm tubes 3mm thick plate extra tube slides on for firebox same for the smoke box going to fire it with 3 2" burners the boiler itself is 370mm long

Once both ends added perfect for my model

What are your tthoughts on this one thanks and best wishes mike

Thread: still no boiler design
15/12/2014 13:49:06
Hi fizzy pm sent
14/12/2014 13:25:58

Hi Jason yh it is for the pyrte but the design has changed greatly and is now a lot bigger and in a wagon style model apose to a traction engine........ How do I work out how much steam I need to produce?

I don't mind designing my own boiler if someone could lead me in the right directions for the calculations used to work out tube thickness etc?

I already have a good idea of the design wanted/needed thru looking and researching on google and wikki

Joining a club for me at the moment is no option to me due to not driving so will have to be designed in house so to speak although I will get the design approved by a boiler inspector etc

I just need the basic info to set me on my way
