Thread: Advice sought on buying a nature watch camera for my garden |
23/06/2022 21:57:19 |
Toguard H20 was recommended a couple of years ago by a club member as it only used 4 batteries and had run 3 months at the time on one set. It might be less range/ whatever though. Foxes dig to get worms. Pots and compost heaps are easier to dig than hard earth. They don't eat slugs. |
Thread: CNC engraving |
23/06/2022 21:45:47 |
Instead of brass use steel and a V engraver choosing font and depth to make the peaks of the letters very very thin. Then careful control of temperature and pressure will provide a very light imprint scorching rather than burning. It might also be possible to use strong alkali to print a stain mark. |
Thread: 5" gauge Kozo Hiraoka Shay |

Re - holes. I think there are two concentric tubes to the funnel. The flue gas with embers goes up the middle and the embers are thrown sideways to fall back between the two tubes. There they either burn to ash which with good wood is light and will not clog like coal ash does. I would expect the design to have tried to arrange that there is a relative vacuum between inner and outer tube such that the ash is sucked back into the main flue. |
Thread: Drummond type M tailstock alignment |
19/06/2022 20:44:53 |
I think SOD was almost there but it i not the bed wear you need to think about but the tailstock body reference edge (as with the saddle) which will have worn to a slight banana shape. every now and then a bit of swarf will get in there too as you move it around, then be cleared next time you move in the opposite direction. As for suggesting a lathe should be scrapped just for a little aging - shame. Just relegate it to rough work and woodturning,. |
Thread: Blacking aluminium |
19/06/2022 20:32:08 |
Anyone tried printer ink as the dye since there is so much left when they decide they need you to buy more? |
Thread: Is there an alloy that looks like copper but isn’t? |
19/06/2022 20:23:21 |
It is Beryllium oxide (and probably other salts) that is a health hazard, not so much the alloy. Could it be aluminium bronze that is also a pig to machine I believe? |
Thread: motor insurance rant |
16/06/2022 00:07:23 |
If you lot are griping about a few hundred quid you should try living inside the M25. I thought this thread was going to be about the rip off of nobody driving anywhere during lockdown and yet paying more. And on the subject of insurance in general all the ME clubs that didn't do any public running or other insured activity yet still didn't get a rebate. My men's shed got a whole 2 months free after not meeting or doing anything for six months. |
Thread: Looking at a new resin 3D printer |
15/06/2022 18:14:42 |
I understand the latest version of Cura yields faster prints and there are a few Youtube videos of a technique of designing slits in the model walls for certain shapes that also helps print faster. For getting larger items you can tilt and angle the model to get it in but there all sorts of trips and catches so it takes a lot of work to get it right. Some hours of video watching may help. Since the resolution of resin printing is a few thou it is often practical to split the model up and make tabs and slots etc to join them together accurately. |
Thread: 13G? |
15/06/2022 18:02:09 |
I believe something like this has been mentioned before. The G is a reference to the German word for thread possibly Gewinde. 13tpi is American 1/2" UNC. |
Thread: Change of direct debit for MEW? |
13/06/2022 18:11:19 |
Posted by SillyOldDuffer on 13/06/2022 13:48:11:.
Serious complaint: with one exception all the men on the front covers have more hair than me, and no pot bellies! Further to this if I wanted pictures of men I would buy a different kind of magazine. The glossy front cover picture is valuable real estate for a detailed photo of one of the machines/models relating to the content or at least our hobby. The current MEW cover is particularly wasted opportunity. If this issue is on the newsagent shelves can anyone really think it will help sales? |
Thread: How I am wasting time |
10/06/2022 18:39:15 |
We were told during my Uni course that during the initial smelting of, I think bauxite, the enclosed long furnace had holes in the sides, perhaps for arc electrodes to be inserted. They got blocked by the gunge inside so for many years after WW2 a system was devised for using bazooka rounds to open them again. |
Thread: Curiosity about an Aldi belt sander |
10/06/2022 18:12:24 |
It is all about the belt and how in a short description the vendors leave off information to just cover the basics. Any sander can be used on a variety of materials however in amateur or hobby situations vendors will assume you are just a typical DIY woodworker. Hence they are supplied with a belt/disc suitable for wood which will not last long on metal depending on the hardness of the subject. Equally plastics will clog a fine belt more quickly. A sander aimed at a professional metalworker will likely be described as a 'linisher' and supplied with a suitable more expensive belt. |
Thread: How to display an 80 character line length on my Android phone |
09/06/2022 20:53:41 |
What happens to SOD's example if you rotate the display 90 degrees? |

And all this started with a powered cross feed operation? Easy to get confused! We have two different lathes in discussion here. First was cross feed then picture posted by Bombardier was a different one. |
Thread: Does anybody know this company? Please Help |

Thanks for the pointer. 1" x 5/16 square head on ebay. |
06/06/2022 19:41:54 |
The Brundle contact is interesting but on the subject of Church repairs does anyone have a source of old looking non galvanised square head woodscrews about 6-8mm shank size for oak door furniture where the nails no longer hold? That should be iron furniture for oak doors. Edited By Bazyle on 06/06/2022 19:43:00 |
Thread: Warco green paint |
06/06/2022 19:12:04 |
If you are 'touching up chips' and want to brush it on all you have to do is spray a bit into a tin lid and dip the brush in that. However the OPs problem might be painting the shed to match and the cost of spray cans might be a bit high. Mmmm matching green shed and machinery inside and out might be interesting |
Thread: Warco WM 250V power feed stuck/crash |
06/06/2022 17:41:44 |
The red patch on the photo implies to me that the pinion hit the bed so I suspect that something like a circlip or grubscrew holding the gear shaft in the gearbox was missing and it worked its way outwards from the gearbox. |
Thread: Mill Bolt Source? |

If one did make one's own, what would you use? EN4, EN24? |
Thread: Which stand for Myford ml7 |
31/05/2022 17:47:36 |
What is the shed floor? Rigid stand on wibbly wobbly wood is waste of time. How about concrete floor and pile of breeze blocks under the headstock end, bricks under the tailstock. Can't find a cheap drip tray - cast in concrete. |
