Thread: What type of pin is this?
29/09/2014 21:26:46

Just to futher stoke the fires..

I often see shear pins in outboard motors...as sacrificial between prop..and gearbox shaft.

These use a ccopper alloy..which I think is brass..it matches workshop properties of brass..

I say maybe brass since brass is not a material I would choose for salt water...

But the shear strength is comparable so..and colour isn't bronze..but still. .

To the point ..

brass is used as a sacrificial component between ss and the plastic of the prop...

I have seen steel.. ( notched)..bronze and brass shear components...

I have not seen ali but thats my loss..

Still keen to learn.

Btw..looks like a roll pin to me..I hope those two funtions weren't combined but it might be..again still keen to learn. ..

Thread: How do i drill small holes - just ruined my Elmers Tiny Column :(

And woodpeck ...lots....0.2 size pecks.( rolls eyes)...coolant will help even in brass..to wash the swarf from drill/hole when retracted

27/09/2014 17:06:28

The bottom of your drilled hole will at best be a plane surface..at 0.2 mm scale it will probably have a scrape mark across the bottom from where the drill stopped..

This ridge is worse to start on than a plane surface...

Once deflected the drill is off on its own...

I would start on a faced and if needed stoned face...

At 0.2 mm in brass say 250 000 rpm...so inpractice as fast as you have...

Also you need a drill chuck of better or comparable runnout for your drill..

But try dead flat face and fast as possible...

Chose drill or rod of same diameter as stop...

Manoeuvre vice until " drill" just touches fixed jaw..

Drill center now in line with stop centerline when clamped in vice..

Now drill as desired...

Thread: Problems with CNC cut knurl - sub-contract order
23/09/2014 18:03:05
Just had a look through a large box of "spare"..screw gauges...
Bare with me..
These are knurled for purely practical reasons.......
These appear "perfectly"matched across 50 different go and no go and even one taper gauge..the no go use a undercut bit to leave two knurled bands..

In any case these were made in hardened tool steel and a couple in carbide( I suspect the outter is steel not carbide but..)..
It is possible to do this work ..I haven't in 316.. but it is do able.....
Btw 303 is very much more forgiving than 316.. ..
And is it normal to reject non conforming parts...
Too right it is.
It isn't even your place to have to sort the conforming/ non conforming parts.. Common practice would be to bounce the lot and make the supplier sort them..
I used to work in a company running with reject rated in the ppm..
And by god didn't we fight our corner before accepting any reject..
But we fought to the drawing....and order...
22/09/2014 23:30:35
To be frank if your supplier doesn't already know what went wrong then nothing you are going to tell him will help.
316 as you know can work harden rapidly
.so knurling is a challenge. ..
Hence you farmed these out.
Suggestions. .
Drill / tap cross holes after knurle
..interrupted cuts can set off "chatter"...

Allow turning to size if you were using stock size ( again work hardened skin on stock)
.
Be clear on the "standard" acceptable for finished part...."he " might not have the same criteria as you ..reach agreement...

Thread: Trouble with M2 thread
21/09/2014 14:15:26
For one production part we had to tap M1.6 into 316S11 stainless steel..in effect bottomed ie two threads runout to blind hole....challenging enough but this was threaded for 5 mm at end of 4 mm deep ... clearance hole. .....these were ordered and delivered in lots of 250...they were turned prior to tapping in lots of 1000..that was the potential scrap rate...we budgeted for ten parts per tap...
In practice it settled down to over 500 parts per tap and the yield consequently went up.
The tapping fixture built for the job achived thread controlled infeed and finger tip reverse for swarf break ( you know that quarter turn backwards used with hand taps...)..

We ( well I) achived this with a simple very wide pulley...imagine a form with 60 mm between flanges and 80 mm dia flange..on spindle carrying tap...
Spindle floats and drive is via 50 mm "wheel" between flanges perp. To spindle.
Push spindle one way and drive is cw
pull spindle and drive stops and reverses.....
Another slide carries part and is fed as desired. ..leaving other hand to apply you favourite cutting compound. ....
Used mill to drive vertical spindle. ...and off you go. ..
From breaking two..to three taps per finished part to 100 s per tap...
..
Any way the real secret is present tap in line....and rigidity sideways....

My understanding of these machines suggests that the brushes don't. ."touch"..and its the spiky nature of the brush that is the active bit...
But I have seen brushes made of bowed foil___^___ sort of fold thing. ..
