Thread: My New Warco VMC Turret Mill
31/10/2012 20:14:01

Glad for your sake its all safely installed. I had a far happier experieince with my Warco lathe - I think a lot depends on the driver. And the access. Mine came well equipped and placed the pallet where I wanted it.

I did have a wait for the lathe but Warco were accurate to the week when it became available.

Thread: Ether
16/07/2012 15:41:09

I understand (having bought from both) that Model Technics and Southern Modelcraft supply ether for diesel fuel as well as ready mixed fuel.

I still prefer to mix my own - perhaps its the danger of blowing the roof off the shed!

Before you admonish me I do really mix on the table in the garden so fumes are dispersed as soon and as safely as possible.

Could even be 'repeat forever' ...

Thread: Not fit for purpose
11/05/2012 21:17:31

How about a plan rating so that a beginners plan would be VERY WELL checked and as near to 100% as possible but some plans could be rated for the 'advanced modeller' and subject to a higher risk of error.

Putting intp print a beginner's plan that has obvious errors was just not fair. And of course there will not (unlike drawings with issue and correction notices) be any real way for the beginner to get the PLAN corrected. He/she will be left to trawl through this forum or ensure he/she purchases future copies of the magasine in the hope that they will spot some notes at some time in the future.

Thread: Vertical Parting Tool
23/04/2012 17:04:46

You've got me interested Alan! Any chance of a picture or sketch showing the tool looking towards the chuck from the tailstock?

If my visualisation is correct the tool could be reversed and put nearer the front of the lathe to cut with anticlockwise (forwards) rotation? I know that would get in the way of the normal tool holder etc so not a practical solution. I'm just trying to visualise the cutting forces and the tool being vertical.

Thread: Toolmaker's Clamps
04/03/2012 19:20:45

I can still remember the sound mine made when the teacher threw it to the end wall of the workshop.

I had drilled the clearance hole in the wrong half! However, he was good enough to give me his one - which I still have 40 years later!

Thread: What's this tool?
19/02/2012 16:25:02

No markings at all. It is quite well made and probably not a 'home made' job. There are no real signs of wear to show if it was for cutting or burrs etc. The age is almost certainly 70 years plus judging from the other tools I have with it.

Not sure about the scale but architects use model people in smaller scales for their models of buildings. Be prepared for a big hit in the wallet though!

Thread: What's this tool?
18/02/2012 14:55:40

Overall tool

Anyone able to shed light on this tool? O/A length 4" approx, has a tang for a file handle(?) and cross shape machined on the end by four equispaced milled groves (and a bit of needle file work).

The cross is quite accurately made 0.235" tip to tip and the arms of the cross about 25 thou. The end is quite 'crisp'.

I am thinking leather work or saddlery perhaps?

End of tool

I would also suggest getting a rule marked just in sixteenths on one edge and eighths on the other. Getting a novice to read a rule maked down to 1/32 (or worse...) is just too difficult. Obviously sometimes you need to; but fractions are difficult enough.

Metric not quite as bad...

Colin - I can remember that book and one detailing an oscillator with a casting as the base/frame we made many that worked with classes in the 70's but by late 80's we were into cardboard and the nasty machines were being ripped out.
Thread: Power Hacksaw run off
08/02/2012 12:41:54
Ii think thiis is a 'feature' of most power hacksaws. As Jason indicates I also think caused by an uneven set but often still present in new blades. We underestimate the amount of feedback we provide with a hand saw in order to achieve a (fairly) straight cut.

Thread: Vernier vs Micrometer
27/01/2012 16:24:17
Isn't a mic a fancy G cramp and a vernier an adjustable spanner??

We all use what's easiest I guess and gives repeatable measurements.

I'm never sure how accurate they are but a digial vernier is a lot easier to read to a degree of precision!

One in Hastings. Still working in the summer I think but a bit hidden behind other 'attractions'.

Used to be a great one in Danson Park (Welling) but now closed . Spent youth trying to outrun it on my bike...

Come on now! I like the cheap tat!

One man's tat is another man's bargain.

I've no problem with buying chap, tatty anything - even tools. If it breaks after I've given it a bit of a hammreing and I know its useful I've then no problem with buying a replacement of better quality. Sometimes the tatty one lasts and lasts...

Such a nice model that I can understand if you would prefer to keep it dry!

Great show!! I bought, planned and schemed...

Any chance that next year there could be a few (more) chairs? It would have been great to relax a bit and take in some of the skills shown in the models.

It would also mean that the chairs in the cafe area were not as precious. And not occupied by those eating their own food or 'resting their eyes'...

Thread: How much ???
13/10/2011 17:45:59
I thought we were trying to help a beginner? Anyone who is going to start on a locomotive will probably not really need a complete list. Even so an ideal of the castings cost may be useful. I'm usually shocked anyway!

Perhaps a list (if available) could be on the website?

What is NOT helpful is articles that say 'I used a huge chunk of brass given to me by a friend' or 'I found this in the scrap box'.

I don't have friends with secret supplies of brass or a scrap box with that size in it. Some projects are very expensive if you source material all as new - just like a beginner would have to do.

So an idea of cost would be a help even if not perfect.
