I’m more of a Walt Kowalski man, - every man needs a lathe.

Thanks chaps , some good suggestions - seems the £60 isn't too bad when I will get about 6 out of it. A supplier of vintage parts is charging £20 for a single in aluminium.

Chris - thanks , good point , no idea what arials look like but the wrecked ones in are brass so I will be sticking to brass.

Bill, - not much good at keeping the mud out tho.

I am near Ilkley Brian.

I need to make some bearing retainer rings for a set of BSA bike wheels, ( possibly originally B44 for a metisse build). They are just over 2 inches diameter so not critically 55 ml, - 2 ⅛ inches would do.

I need about 6 inches.

Can anyone recommend a supplier?. Or has anyone got some they want to sell ?

Cheers

Nick

Thread: 'What LatheXXXXX sorry 3D Printer should I buy'
22/02/2018 22:06:57

img_1654.jpgThe linear rails are bolted to aluminium extrusion, they are rigid. Compared to just about every other printer out there it seems very rigid . The stepper motors are moons. The rails are made by IKO. It looks a properly engineered solution to me. It prints very well, - I have only used PLA from a 0.4 nozzle so far. It prints very good rafts that are easy to separate from the bed. From my limited experience the prints are very good at 0.4mm requiring only minimum finishing. It prints very nice threads from Fusion360. The holes in the bed are under the raft and make no impact on anything. You can place your print away from them in the software if necessary. There is a heated bed as an extra. I bought one but haven't needed to use it yet. Also I have no enclosure. Users have made their own on the web.

There are settings for simplify 3d which I haven't used yet. It works well with its own software and Fusion360.

I have recently received this printer from china, - $299. It took about 10 minutes to set up and start printing. Really impressed with eh build quality, print quality and supplied software. No associations etc. Also this guys video is great.

Looks tremendous. What are you using for files and is it restrictive for file size?.

Thread: Airline connectors anyone?, - Biax grinder
11/05/2017 08:19:23

img_9983.jpgAnother ebay find. My workshop air (and knowledge) does not extend beyond a few PCL connected tools. My compressor has a line with a vertex PCL (female) connector and most of my tools have PCL male ends. I would like to get this grinder working in much the same way. I think a short 'flying' hose to the grinder would be good.

I don't know what sort of connector is currently on it ?, can anyone identify it?. I could then get a female end to connect onto the flying lead, PCL at the other end.

Also , I could do without all the added bulk of the steel exhaust at the other end. does anyone know Biax ?, is there an alternative that is a bit more user friendly ?img_9982.jpg

Thread: Unheated garage ok for a lathe?
08/05/2017 20:30:25

I have a DSG in the garage, sheet over it in winter and an electric 12 inch greenhouse anti frost heater in the chip pan to keep air moving. Haven't had any rust.

Thread: repainting powder coated metal ?
26/03/2017 12:43:47

It that time of year and the exterior bits need sprucing up, - railings and garden table and chairs (sheet metal). I know they need to be degreased, clean, dry etc but what about primer and prep ?

I agree with the warning signs, once you have seen them it is clear whats going to happen. The tip of this HSS tool was too small and caused the fine stringy chip to heat up. Heres how not to do it.

Thread: Levelling a lathe?
31/01/2017 16:47:40

A common misconception is that lathes need to be level - they don't (some are designed with angled beds). They do benefit from being fixed down without any twist in the bed and the engineer's level helps with this (it doesn't matter is both ends are angled at 0.5 degrees, for example, as long as its in the same direction), but the acid test is actually turning something or checking with a test bar.

Neil

Not according to DSG, they do like it level and you only have to fix it if you are a purist/ heavy duty man and then it requires 6 holes in the garage floor 12 inches deep by 4 inches square.

I have spent sometime with a too short 22mm spanner levelling a lot of lathe and indeed its now test bar time. Not sure if the image below will be the right way round - usual problem.

Thread: What Did You Do Today (2017)
24/01/2017 22:16:54

Liberated from a very large very tough bolt - a 60 degree dovetail cutter to make some tool holders. The bolt is apparently from a sikorsky sky crane landing gear service, via the usual source. Haven't tried it yet...

Thread: Milling vice angle using DRO ?
15/01/2017 16:28:02

I am making an indexable dovetail cutter similar to Randy Richards **LINK**

I want to set my vice up at 30 degrees to the x axis to mill the seat for the insert. I don't have a sine bar or gauge blocks. I have this DRO **LINK**

I have read the manual several times and it doesn't seem to have an angle setting function. Is there a way to do it using the DRO ?.
