Hi Ian Some time ago I made a tap from silver steel and hardened it for use in wood, it had 45 degree flanks so thread form was 90 degrees, the person it was made for reported it worked OK. What is the minor diameter ? Emgee

Yes now I read the post title and see alternator I agree I was mistaken, however don't vehicle alternators have integrated rectification so the output is DC + and - ? Emgee

Thread: Boring without a boring head on a mill. |
09/07/2023 00:36:15 |
Yes it will work but remember to allow for the diameter of the cutter when moving the table axis to position the work, move 1/2 hole diameter minus 1/2 cutter diameter from the centered under spindle position. If you have any backlash in the rotary table operating screw take care if climb milling the cutter doesn't grab the work, also lock the axis movements on the mill table before cutting. Emgee |

Thread: Hearing aids - NHS or private? |
06/07/2023 09:20:16 |
I am fortunately not using any hearing aid device but can report that my late brother-in-law had 2 sets from different private suppliers that had all bells and whistles, but changed to a set from the NHS which he said gave improved hearing and less trouble than those costing a fortune, in one case £4000 Emgee |

Posted by SillyOldDuffer on 04/07/2023 17:47:31: . Single phase has two wires, both of which would be 'hot', except one is earthed by the supplier at the transformer. Thus homes get two wires, Line (or Live), and Neutral. Although Neutral carries current, it's safe because it and anyone likely to touch it are all at earth potential. Also, each house has it's own separate earth (details vary). The house earth protects against failure of the supplier earth and also allows anything in the building that might accidentally become hot to be grounded. So if a bare Live wire accidentally touches a hot-water pipe, fuses blow rather than allow the plumbing to become shock hazard. House earths are designed and implemented in a particular way, affordably fit for purpose, but not suitable for everything. Dave I believe some points in your statement need more discussion. The neutral conductor cannot be termed safe as if the neutral conductor is broken between the load of a piece of equipment on the circuit and the consumer unit it will be capable of giving a full mains voltage shock to a person or animal if they provide an earth path for the voltage to travel down. Many properties rely entirely on the suppliers earth (PME) and have no independent earthing arrangement, it is only in mainly rural areas where no supplier earth is provided where the installation will be provided with it's own earthing system, usually copper rod/s depending on soil resistance. Not a good idea IMO, use the power source earth. Emgee |

It is important to connect the motor earth conductors to the incoming earth supply at the VFD, and as said start by connecting the screen at the vfd end only and test. If you are using the correct glands then if the motor terminal box is metal you will need to insulate the screen from the gland, or use a plastic TRS gland in the first instance, revert to the correct gland for connecting the screen to the motor earth conductor when/if you want to connect the screen at both ends. In your case because you have only a 2M run and a small load the reduced size of the 3 earth conductors will no doubt be satisfactory to pass an EFLI test, however they may need a suplementary earth conductor if used with large motors and/or long cable runs. Hi Bosun I use a 0-30mm dial indicator as a check for X axis positioning on a cnc lathe and find it is in unison with the cnc tavel of the cross slide so would say it could be used to measure but that is not normally used for that, just to provide an indication of the program X datum. Emgee

Recently I have been using bacon fat collected from the grill pan before washing it up, works well when cutting/ drilling and tapping various grades of aluminium. Probably works as tallow did for threading steel conduit, very similar consistency. When my RTD bottle became empty last year after 10 or more years of use I replaced it with a much cheaper substitute which works well. Emgee |
Thread: Lathe/VFD/DRO issue |

Hi Roger Some makers suggest connecting the screen to earth at both vfd and the motor, others say only at the vfd so check what your maker suggests. Get ready for those who will tell you the cables should be terminated in a gland plate, no doubt a good idea but not related to your interference problem.

Just for information BT30 arbors are normally available threaded M12 or !/2"UNC and are termed quick change as it is usual to retain them with a pull stud fitted. My Emco F1 spindle is SK30 but the BT 30 are the same taper and dimensions. INT30 taper is identical but has the short parallel extension which is threaded for the draw bar. Emgee |
