Thread: Workshop electrics
30/01/2015 20:54:03

Hi Otley

Anthony has given some good advice, there are many factors to consider when sizing a cable for a sub-main to another consumer unit.

Consult a qualified person for a system design and installation after deciding exactly what sockets/lights you want.

Be safe in your new workshop.

Hi Mathew

It would be best if you state the size of lathe you have, possibly the make and model, someone may have already been there and done it.

Thread: Sandown photos and thoughts on the show
16/12/2014 12:36:12

Hi Diane

I appreciate what you are saying about internet purchases but when speaking to a trader at the Midlands exhibition this year they indicated it would most likely be the last time they attended a show, it was fast becoming a loss making exercise because of the high price being charged for exhibiting stand space. Perhaps the apparent lack of support for Sandown is for the same reason.

I believe the firm in question had been exhibiting at the Midland Ex since the days when it was held in the Uni grounds, and any readers who remember that are pretty old !!!!!!

Hi all

Many thanks for the info regarding the Whittle V8 builder, Edvind Wold has a great web site and I must agree has done some excellent work. The Whittle is a running example as shown in his video's. Must get cracking with mine now I have seen such an example.

Thanks for posting the pictures Jason, I'm particularly interested to know if the Whittle V8 builder is a forum user, couldn't make out the forename but the surname is Wold on the builders plate.

On the yahoo Whittle group several engines have been built but the only one video'd running is the original Eric Whittle engine, other builders report no success, just wondering if this is a runner or display only.

Thread: Denford Star Turn
02/12/2014 23:24:48

Hi Mark

1 thread on the Denford Forum says spindle nose on the Starturn 4 is threaded 18mm same as old spark plug.

Bore through the spindle is stated 10mm in the manual so unlikely to have a D1-3 nose.

Such a terrible and dangerous place - best you do not risk going again - then there will be more room for us!

Hi Anthony and Baz

Didn't mention the fact I have a disability which is the reason walking on such uneven surfaces presents difficulty, but that's my problem and not yours.

I totally agree with Howard regarding the width of aisles at the Fosse, even trying to move around the stands is hard work at most times of the day until mid afternoon. The organisers obviously want to make as much from rented stand space as the site will allow and fail to consider the impact on those attending.

While in a moaning mood I found the newly spread 25mm stone paths in the car park painful and dangerous to walk on, why didn't the contractor employed do a proper job and roll them in.

Thread: What should I budget for getting a workshop wired up?
14/10/2014 12:58:40
Posted by Bob Brown 1 on 14/10/2014 08:03:20:

I think the installation is a TT system with no supplier earth but an earth spike and an earth cable back to CU then on to the ELCB hence the single earth wire in the picture.

Hi Bob

If this obsolete breaker has to remain then there needs to be 2 earth cables at the voELCB, 1 from the earth electrode (stake or spike if you want) connected to the E terminal on the breaker and the second conductor from the F (frame) terminal of the breaker to the CU earthing bar. This type of device responds to a voltage rise of up to 50v on the CU earth bar, it does not provide personal safety if the fault is from the live to metalwork not connected to the CU earth bar, a current operated device will provide personal safety as it is caused to operate by current imbalance between the live and neutral conductors, hence the availability of many different ratings and time delay types.

The best advice is to remove the ELCB and if no supplier earth is available fit a current operated device (RCCB). There are many types available but as it is possibly controlling all circuits at least a 100ma would be desirable, use a 30ma type for personal safety on selected final circuits as required.

Hi Phil

With 40 years experience you should have identified the ELCB as a voltage operated type and not current operated.

Secondly if the installation had been converted to PME by the supply authority there would be a suitably sized earth conductor from the consumer unit connected to the neutral block, there is none showing in the picture.

I don't know any electrical contractors in my area who are prepared to install customer supplied materials for such a job, maybe where you are it is accepted.

Hi Joey T

The double pole earth leakage circuit breaker in your installation is voltage operated and not current operated.

For several years this type has not complied with the regulations, it can act as an isolator but only to the rating of 60A.

Thread: Exploded view of Hoffman or similar Dividing Head
21/08/2014 12:14:39

Hi

Thanks to MichaelG for the link, just what I needed.

Size I'm aiming for will be 1.75" to centre in horizontal mode, max chuck size will be 3" and the extra 1/4" clearance is in case the chuck jaws are outside the chuck body.

This size will suit my needs as mostly I am working with small items and will even when in vertical mode still leave reasonable distance spindle to job.

Thanks Graeme for your post, the GHT is OK but to use at an angle or in a vertical mode it needs fitting to a tilting table and so then becomes too large for my needs.

Regards, Emgee

21/08/2014 09:23:11

As there are no small dividing heads available to suit my machine I am considering making one similar in design to the Hoffman geared unit.

As I am not familiar with the internal gear set-up/connection an exploded view of a unit would point me in the right direction to see if it is possible for me to make in a smaller size.

Any help appreciated, Emgee

makes me think itis greater than 2deg25min taper.

Thread: Independant 4 jaw chuck butchery
09/08/2014 09:08:40

Hi Clive

Advantage of holes placed close to the OD of the chuck allow the front fixing chuck to be removed from a lathe with greater diameter workpiece still in situ as turned, thus ensuring concentricity of the part when the chuck is transferred for the next op on a RT or in my case a dividing head.

Thread: ARC - PayPal and Credit Cards
09/08/2014 00:00:22

My own view is that if I was faced with CC surcharges it would be a discouragement .... particularly if Paypal was also limited and I was purchasing overseas (where I have no other sensible options).

This is very true in most cases where sending or receiving payment from outside the UK, Paypal fees are very much less than bank charges.

Thread: DRO using a wire
07/08/2014 23:19:07

Used a BW 3 axis panel but only 2 sensors fitted for several years on a vertical mill, the Z axis was fitted with another BW sensor with an integral readout unit. All were operated by wire tension.

Best to route the wire away from swarf or damage to the wire may occur, once kinked it won't retract into the encoder box correctly.

Thread: ARC - PayPal and Credit Cards

Hi Ketan

Thanks for your honesty regarding additional charges incurred for cards that offer the cardholder some incentive.

but isn't it the case charges for use of a credit card are limited in some way. ?

Will the use of a Debit card remain FOC ?
