Hi Peter Most I have seen have been home made, a 55 or 60 degree raised shape on the end, a 90 degree segment cut or ground out to provide the cutting edge for threading. Emgee |

Chris This may suit you, Floating tapping head with ER20 collets, drawback is it's on a 20mm diameter shank. Just search for Er20 tapping head set Emgee

Thread: Steady rest - metal or roller bearings ? |
09/12/2015 13:09:33 |
Hi Chris I believe the ingress that Roger referred to was the ingress of swarf between the bearing OD and the rotating work. To ensure no marking on the work I clamp and turn a nylon collar to fit the work for the hardened steady fingers to run on. The clamping Jubilee clip has been removed in the picture below. Hi Chris What you describe and want is normally called a "Floating head" type, this would allow a small amount of spindle down function beyond tapping depth before the spindle stop and direction change to rev out. Emgee |

Thread: CM10 Mill Gears |
07/12/2015 23:05:47 |
Hi Iain Fly cutting usually involves an interrupted cut, or even 2 interrupted cuts per rev of the spindle. Taking light cuts should not cause damage but if you go overboard with DOC and speeds I guess it could case a problem. Emgee |
Thread: bridgeport mill table feed wiring diagram with erskin pd/1114/01/b control unit |

Richard Check the overload hasn't tripped. Isolate power and in the table feed control unit you will see the red re-set button, just press firmly to reset in case it had tripped, if you hear a distinct click then that will be reset. Worth a try before ripping out the wiring !!!!!! Emgee

Hi Will Could you please send detail of the method and settings in Mach that enabled the use of the Emco spindle controller. How did the new speed indicator disc work with Mach and do you still have ability to thread ? As for the Z limit why not have the home switch behind the carriage fitted to the bed but adjustable by sliding to suit the length of the workpiece. Like John says put a line of code in to move the saddle away in Z before the toolchange line then after the toolchange move back by the same amount, tool offsets will be used in the toolchange line to ensure the tool is at the correct place. Sending the carriage to a home switch positioned at the tailstock end of the bed creates far more use/wear on all components than necessary. Emgee

Hi Paul I would have thought with any of the safety interlocks broken the spindle should not run at all, not even "inch" in any direction. Emgee |
Thread: Aluminium swarf |

Hi JA 20 degrees sounds a lot to me, you could try about 7 degrees with a chip breaker groove ground in behind the cutting edge. I normally use insert type tooling unless a special is needed, then like you it's HSS ground to suit the job. Emgee |
Thread: Advantages of cast iron rounds |
02/12/2015 17:08:06 |
Picture shows the inside of a cast iron piston made for an ETWestbury designed engine that was fitted to a field charger used for charging radio transmitters in the field during WW2. The engine/charger assembly was parachuted in to the agent/resistance. The original piston was made from a casting and had 2 top compression rings and an oil scraper ring close to the skirt, the small lip below the bottom ring failed and a large part of the piston broke away. The new piston was some 20% heavier than the original. Emgee |
