Also the latest for sale and wanted ads, at bottom right of page, are not updating. There are now over a week of adverts that have not appeared not in the column. Colin

Thread: Black 5 Boiler problems
23/03/2016 10:01:23

Ron, Neil,

The order of events for a commercially made boiler is: 2 x hydraulic by the manufacturer, followed by a 1.5 x hydraulic with fittings attached ( minus the pressure gauge if loco pressure gauge is not rated high enough), carried out by the club inspector, and finally a steam test at normal operational pressure, plus steam accumulation test to make sure that the safety valves are capable of keeping the pressure to no more than 110% of max operational pressure. It would be perfectly safe, and satisfactory, to do a 1.5 x hydraulic test with blanks or fittings attached before the boiler is fitted into the loco, to give confidence that all is well. Especially as Ron has had so much trouble with this boiler so far.

Still copies available, Smiths seems a good option.

Purchased a copy from Smiths in Totnes yesterday, the last one.

Today Newton Abbot branch still had 3 copies and Torquay 4 copies on the shelves.

So take a holiday in Devon and purchase a copy of the 25th MEW !

Thread: plans for 7.25 gauge rocket

Terry, have you seen my for sale add on this site for rocket plans?

Very comprehensive plans, but do not think that they are available any more from the science museum.

Thread: NEW Original MYFORD Dickson type tool posts & holders
20/12/2012 12:09:02

Note how the MYFORD name does not appear in the Ebay ad.

How sad that you have to withhold the truth in this day and age!!

Would have been nice to see Myford alongside Boxford or even

the origins of the original contract as posted earlier within the ad.

Try 23 March !! my error

22/07/2012 21:00:49

John, have a look at ME 4142, 32 March 2001 onwards. A 1/2in scale freelance traction engine was serialised by the name of ' Little Ben'. It could be scaled slightly to use Mamod wheels. It is a little more " model engineer " than a Mamod or the Wells traction engine and uses a single cylinder , double acting slide valve with slip eccentric. I have seen a completed model and it looks quite smart. If you look on YouTube there is a video of one running on air.

Thread: 5" gauge Lilla
10/07/2012 15:17:40

Hi Mike,

Lilla is a 3 1/2 in gauge loco. You are probably confused because being a narrow gauge prototype then this gives a 3 1/2 in gauge model which is similar in overall proportion to a 5 in gauge standard gauge loco. David is correct that E in M did include the Lilla consruction articles. Drawings and castings are still available from Blackgates ( Leeds ). If you requre a commercial boiler then you could be looking in the region of £1500 !

Thanks to JohnF for your reply to my question. It was interesting to see that you were the only person to be able to give a response when it has had over 500 viewings. If anyone can add to your answer then please do not be shy! So thanks again John.

Thread: Hobbymat sale?????
09/03/2012 15:59:56

Hi All Sellers Beware !!

Lukas Walter also replied to my advert for Sievert Burners. I received an almost identicle EMail as Bill except that he is now in Scotland . He also offered me a draft for 2200GBP for items only worth tens of pounds. He was more generous with me and offered 40GBP to withdraw my advert ! Maybe I should just accept that part of his offer. Seriously though it must now be BUYER BEWARE & SELLER BEWARE.

Regards Colin

P.S I have also informed the relevant website.

My niggle : as a newboy
Just posted an extensive reply on mini lathes and carbide vs hss.
Why after spending time composing the reply has it come out with gaps
and looks very disjointed ???

Thread: What cutting tools for mini - lathe (HSS or Carbide Tipped ?)
13/02/2012 16:35:53
Most carbide tipped tools were designed for heavy industrial use removing a large
amount of material very quickly. They require high speeds large amounts of coolant
rigid machines where even the final cut is relatively large. They do not like intermittent
cuts or very light final finish or rubbing cuts.If you examine a replaceable carbide tip
they are not sharp to the touch as a hss tool. Also there are hundreds of grades and
specifications for the material , shape and rake depending on the material being cut
and other parameters. When a model engineer wishes to buy carbide tips or tipped
tools none of the above data is available , and would probably be irrelevant because
of the limitations of his equipment.
One of the most efficient ways of removing material that the model engineer uses is
the drilling process. This is at best a two edge cutting process, maybe one edge if the
drill has been ground by hand, there fore equivalent to comparing it to the lathe tool.
How many model engineers would use a carbide tipped drill in their tailstock or drilling machine other than for a hard spot in C.I or on glass/ceramics.
This post is considering the mini lathe and as such will not generally have coolant or the rigidity required for carbide tools. By all means borrow a couple to try and compare but
you should find that the only time that they are of use is to get under the skin of an iron
casting.
Some of the ' old school ' may even say why not use carbon steel ?
