Thread: What Did You Do Today 2019 |

You'll soon need a panoramic camera if you keep buying basses, Neil! My local guitar shop has an Epiphone Thunderbird going for £139. John. |

I don't know a great deal about guitars but that bass looks great now you have cleaned it up Neil. Thanks, it sounds good too. Very much a 'precision bass' sound If this works!): Yep sounds very good, nice to have the skill to re-build it and play it.
My first bass was a Westone Thunder 1A, the active one, bought after I'd restored a left-handed Westone for a friend. I really loved it, but the sheer weight of it made me chop it in for a Japanese-built Fender Precision. I eventually outgrew that, and now have a '90's Bass Collection, again Japanese, but in my opinion, as good as a Warwick or a Status. I hope that hasn't offended anybody, just my personal opinions, you understand! I still think that the Westone looks stunning, I'm glad you didn't decide to over-restore it, Neil! John.

I've just bought a bass: it's an early 90's non-graphite neck Status. I've not researched it yet but the guy in the shop knew quite a bit about these guitars. No photo yet as I've left it round at Mrs Metaller's. The plan, as it's rather tatty and scratched and only cost £200, is to customise it cosmetically. If I actually do it I'll make a build log for on here. John. £200 for a status? I thought I was doing well at £130 for the 5-string Hohner! Neil Yes, I was a bit shocked: I went back in the shop yesterday and he's got an Epiphone Thunderbird (cf Krist Novoselic of Nirvana) for £140! Even I wouldn't buy two basses in two days, that's just mad! John. |

Mike, another option could be the Gauge 1 Association's publications- 'Gimra' is worth a look, I have the book and the engineering described is to a high standard. You could make their wheels, frames and valve gear, then make your own design of G scale body.

Beast! Interesting website. I read the article on what to do if you get superglue in your eye. I'm normally very careful about eye protection, but realised that I had never considered using safety glasses whilst using superglue. I will do from now on. John. |

It would be nice if the location had public transport links, I stopped driving years ago. John. (Well, driving cars...trains are another matter!)

Hi Neil, somehow I missed this too, although I visit the Forum every morning. I would be interested in this proposed meet-up. i was for a few years a member of a toy steam forum, and when one of the members suggested a meet-up it was met with great interest. His idea was that we held an annual toy steam show, with the proceeds going to charity. It not only made quite respectable sums of money for the chosen charity, but we also found that, behind the avatars, there were some really nice people and some of us still stay in touch, even though the annual event doesn't happen anymore. How about an old boxwood folding carpenter's rule? You'd need to incorporate the brass hinges, but I think it would look nice. Regards, John. |

I'd suggest that the auction valuers aren't engineers, which might help answer Neil's comments regarding the make up of lots.

Played a board game with the youngsters and had to hum the song 'Spin the Black Circle' by Pearl Jam. What? Who? Chaps beware: there's a whole world out there of which we know nothing!
Dave, you can't be that much of an old duffer if you know a Pearl Jam song! 'See this needle, see my hand, Drop-drop-droppin' it down, oh so gently...' OMG, it's a song about taking drugs! No it's not, it's about playing your old vinyl records!
My Christmas day was really nice: my friend Jacquie, who owns the local Moroccan restaurant, had a bunch of us singletons and waifs and strays round for xmas dinner. It was in her lovely, characterful restaurant and about ten people turned up. We had invited some of the local homeless people, but despite my friend Kev going out in his car to pick them up, none of them actually came which I thought was sad, but can imagine the diffidence they might have been feeling at the prospect of meeting bunch of strangers. And, boy, are we strange! After some excellent food, conversation and ribaldry, I returned home to watch The Outlaw Josie Wales and drink a remaining drop of wine. Jacquie will be plied with her favourite Prosecco later today in the pub, to thank her for her kindness. Regards, John. |
