Further to Andrews above.. SMPS for laptops say ..oftern made for US market ...so far so good..because US line sockets are line and not_line the filtering on the frount end is designed for this.. and the output is refferenced to the midpoint of these two phases ...due to the nature of europe wide line being line and neutral ( sort of 0 V) the filter can express around 200 V onto the 0V of your laptop...which being not earth bonded sits at around that voltage waiting for you to complete the circuit...what about PAT testing I hear you cry ...Computers are exempt from that part of PAT because they fail due to earth "leakage" in the filter capacitors..( exactly what the testing is supposed to do!) ,,,

You couldn't make it up....

Hi Jason

Are you saying if i put a meter between my laptop 0 volt and earth it will read 200 volt?

In the past I have had the tingles from equipment because it wasn't earthed, faulty extention. I presumed it had floated up to half mains potential.

I mended my folding sack truck by tying a granny knot in the piece of string that stops the handle coming off, I kid you not, that's how it manufactured. To finish off I drilled out the wheels spindle hole and made two new bushes because the sleeve had turned in the plastic wheel.

Hi Nick

I thought i was doing well when I fished a 90volt 1/2 horse DCPM motor out of the scrap bin.

I have lashed up a test rig from a 110 volt building site transformer to give me 55 volt lumpy DC. Sometimes it works and sometimes it trips a 16amp circuit breaker so I suspect a shorted turn. If I try to stop the shaft from turning I can't feel a loss of torque so may just mark the position where it trips out the breaker so I don't try and start it there.

Thanks for that. I think they still sell on Ebay, I'll check it out.

Hi Les

I like your ingenuity, what size grit is your wheel?

I'm toying with the idea of using and old lathe, ML2 I think but there isn't a Myford on the casting so who knows.

Thread: SIP Plasma 46 any info?
07/02/2013 11:42:31

Plasma cutter a cut40 arrived yesterday from Plasmapart, had a quick play to make sure it wasn't DOA. Not allowed to use it for real until Friday. Tested it on an old leaf spring about 12mm thick plus test welds. It cut through it easy but there was a lot of dross holding the cuts together, this is to be expected because it's near its limits plus my lack of experience.

Hi Steve

Sorry you've not hit it off with Ketan. I bought my X3 and my KX3 from him with no regrets. On my last visit he didn't want to sell me an ER11 collet chuck because he did't think it would be fit for the purpose I was going to use it (he hasn't seen my workcheeky) but it did the job I wanted. When I am looking to buy something I look on his website first.

This is just to give you some balance from an ARC customer.

If you want to build your own, you could look on Gadgetbuilders website or Michael Cox's.

Michael's design uses a parallelagram idea for one of the angles so you don't have to cut a compound angel.

I did the gadet builder one with my own tool bit clamp idea. I had some noname 3/16" to steel which wouldn't hold it's edge, from the eccentric web site I noted they used M42 tool steel I think, which may be a cobalt type steel, used this and it held its edge better, but I do abuse it!

Thread: Tool and Cutter Grinder
13/01/2013 11:49:55

Hi Johan

Have you seen the article in MEW 134 Jan 2008 pg42 Tool and Cutter grinder from a junk box?

It may be possible to use a cross vice for x y travel, somebody on this forum has done this already.

You will need some kind of swivel to get the rotational angles.

I like the idea of bolting things together to get an end product I don't have the patience or probably the skill to do it from scratch. Just make up the little bits to make it work!

Cheers Michael.

Thread: SIP Plasma 46 any info?
05/01/2013 00:44:28

Hi John

Thanks for the link.

I will give this site some serious consideration, the fact they are not just box shifters has got to be in their favour.

I seem to remember you had yours linked up to a CNC thingy! So is it a touch start?

Cheers Michael.

Hi Noel

Thanks for your reply. Your experience is exactly what I want to avoid.

SIP is a brand name I recognize but not had anything to do with them, they have a showroom in Buxton which is not to far from Sheffield.

I tried to build a plasma cutter without much success, got it to burn a hole in a piece of wood!

Cheers Michael
