As mentioned before I have used a made up hardening compound using old leather cut up into small pieces, heating part and dipping into the mix. It burned well and with two sessions gave a good surface hardness.

This part was the indexing lever for a pistol and worked fine for the time I had the pistol.

Once again, lathe alignment. Things getting bolted down.

My lathe is supported on 4 rubber feet and is not bolted down to anything and I have no problems.

It doesnt move or show any variation in use and I have cut 12" between centers.

Knighton tools.co.uk seem to have kasenit.

I am interested which glue you use on the paper models, at the moment I use UHU but get contraction of the joins.

Every other glue has a long drying time. I did try the glue used on balsa models but that also contracts joints, do you have any recomendations?

David, I have'nt got a chimney, the whole area is surrounded by woodland. I am going to try a mild vinegar solution to see if it helps. The houses around here are all less than 20 years old, so are built to the clean air act.

It is an estate car and now I have found it under the edge of the rear door where it festers unseen!

The part to case harden will only get a very thin hard zone. The way to do it is to heat to a red heat and dip into the compound and then back into the flame. A dip in salty water will lso remove most of the compound.

Need it harder and deeper, repeat the process. The question of how much you need is a container that it comes in!

A more rigourus method for even depth is to put the item in a metal box filled with the compound, sealing if possible. Cook in a flame for a while at above red heat, maybe 15 to 20 minutes, a full quench in cold water will give the best result.

The one I use is Kasenit, it is available and comes in 3 or 4 size tins. Varying in price from £9 to £20.

My car a VW lives outdoors. We live in a wooded semi rural area.

The car roof rails have a green growth along the crevices.

Also on the trim under the doors.

The felt liners that the windows have as a seal also get this green growth.

Any suggestions of how to prevent, remove, fix.

I would suggest a piece of Mahogany, it will cost you but from my experience will not warp.

The EU messed up all the electrical lighting and now one finds that LED lamps are the norm, But, if you go to an electrical retailer and ask for INDUSTRIAL bulbs you will get what you want. I think they may be ruggedised in some way?

Of course as lighting as changed the way of mounting the lamps has chamged so further expense fitting new mounting points for teh new lighting types.

As my kitchen lighting flourescent tubes started getting expensive with four in the holder I looked for the LED alternative. These I found in LE ligting's cataogue, I bought two round lights for bathroom use and fitted them and they are fine. Dont buy daylight type, buy the warm light ones.

From my observation of he wire wicks on the SDchaublin lathe, the wire about 1mm dia. was set as close to the down tube as possible. I observed the oil meniscus between the wire and the tube wall. The wire touching the tube showed the meniscus effect on both sides of the wire against the tube.

Examples shown are not touching the surface of the receptacles so only allow oil to soak the wick!

My dog, an Aireale bitch cannot abide any living thing in her garden, she patrols diligently dawn to dusk.Squirrels, birds and mice. We have field mice that live in the Cotonaster hedging and sometimes I hear the high pitched yelping that indicates she has cornered a mouse. I go out with the torch to search the hiding place and the mice are quick. So far she has caught 2 mice, she crunches them and drops them leaving me to pick up and dispose.

Swiss Chaublin use wire wicks on their 102 lathes. Seem to work well.

Rats over time will get through laid concrete, I have seen several places where rats have chewed through the cement. We would flood with a hosepipe to flush them out,

The nextime we visited, the holes in the concrete were active again. If cementing the holes bung some wire mesh in as far as it will go and then cement.

A rat story from Nairobi, Nairobi is home to a giant rat that lives only in the Nairobi river. River you say, yes, a small thin rifffle of dirty water. Boy are these rats big, as big as badger, not quite but close. There were only afew of them and quite rare.

I lived close to the Museum, Ainsworth road and had a flat on the 2nd floor. I used to wake up at night with a start, sensing something on the bed. Checking nothing there.

A while later we moved the fridge and in the motor space found 4 baby rats! The mother rat I chased into the bathroom and it went into the closed space under the bath. a few quick pokes with a sharp stick sorted that out and the baies disposed of.

Now it became clear, in the bedroom was a narrow louvre window and I would on a hot night leave it open, rat climbs in, runs down the bed after jumping onto the bedside locker. Strange as the dog slept on the veranda outside the window.

Now suitably roused I watched and across the road was a line of dustbins and at dusk rats were in and out of those bins.

Time to act, I would wait until the head appeared and pop, down went the rat back in the bin, head shots with a .177 air rifle. I spoke to the owner opposite and he moved his bins so rats were gone. But was'nt over, next I saw a rat climbing up the outside wall with it's back against the down pipe and so I looked on the roof and they were in the box that enclosed the water tank. They were quick to fix and after that we had peace.

back in the UK I started doing a rat shoot on a Fri. night in a chicken farm, using .22 rat shells. £90 a thousand.

We would walk into the space and switch on the lights and it was scurry madness, we all had allocated areas so it was safe. Tally usually in the 20's plus, dumped in the field and all gone by morning. Foxes take them.

My ssmall kitchen timer has now degraded it's case, not sticky but has changed colour. I can scrape off the discoloration but there are too many small indents to do all over.

A ecent visit to the dentist, showed a bit broken off a molar, damn toffees. He said I think it needs a crown, Oh, cannot you just fill it? OK, £65, £155 for a crown temporary.

I am sure that dentists annd now vets are being bought out and charges go up. Very dubious now about going there.

In a previous life I used toScuba dive in a bay popular with Yachts on day trips from the marina. Searching about I found numerous eating irons, knives,spoons etc, obvoiusly thrown out with the dishwater. Never found any that were rusted>

One thing I found was a Cats Eye Cowerie shell, the only one I ever found.
