Thread: Boxford spindle thread type |

Going back maybe 10 years or so ago an ER32 spindle nose fitting collet chuck from a well known UK supplier didn’t fit either of my Boxfords, one dating from 1954, the other from 1960/61, nor did it fit a brand new spindle sourced from Boxford themselves. The thread of the spindle in all cases is 55 deg, 1.5” x 8tpi The collet chuck measured something very close but didn’t thread more than two turns. The replacement was just the same. The supplier said they had no others returned. Suspected the collet chuck might be a Southbend 60 degree one but couldn’t be bothered wasting any more time as a job needed doing so I just bought a backplate and one of these

The one chronos supply with a halogen lamp is fine, I’ve got several around my workshop and as they use a proper wound transformer rather than an electronic one it can be upgraded to led (far better IMHO than getting one supplied WITH an LED) You just need a 12v led that conforms to the dimensions of the original halogen lamp, with no forward protrusion as it sits behind a piece of glass. I’ve a stash of Philips 12v gu5.3 8w 621 lumen LEDs (equivalent to a 50W halogen without the heat) that fit just perfect. But the magnetic base is sold separately and not available at the moment so you’d need to bolt it down. https://www.chronos.ltd.uk/product/dustproof-halogen-gooseneck-lamp/ https://www.chronos.ltd.uk/product/magnetic-base-for-halogen-led-lamps/ Edited By Martin 100 on 02/02/2023 16:26:55 |

Apparently the belts are available at https://simplybearings.co.uk/shop/Belts-Flat-Drive-Belts/c4601_8093/index.html 300mm, the shortest they and many other suppliers do is too long and outside the range of any adjustment, iirc it needs to be either 280mm or 290mm. I will check but it might be a few days. There is a uk source (plus there was a German source) much cheaper than Tony Griffiths, something in the order of about £8 iirc, again it’ll take a few days to dig out. |
Thread: Q-Cut inserts |

Using a countersunk screw in shear is not ideal. It would be better with a close fitting dowel at the business end and the screw just behind. Then the dowel would take the shear and the screw would just hold it to the tongue. As you are not trying to make 2 out of one it can be a bit longer. What I did in terms of fastener & fastener mounting centres was exactly emulating the original Greenwood setup, just slightly less (& wasted) blade overhang away from cutting tip. A bit of a bodge but so is much on a smallish lathe (Boxford)

Many apologies, felt sure I’d bought them individually many years ago when I also bought a sandvik parting tool blade from RileyShutt as mine from greenwood was becoming a bit tired and prone to losing grip on the insert. The double ended sandvik one can be cut in half, drilled and countersunk to replace the greenwood sourced items, the result is blade a bit shorter overall but it still parts off the same diameter. (This was sometime before sandvik QD arrived) |

Posted by DC31k on 05/01/2023 19:17:56: The insert for the one pictured is the 151.2 code, similar to the one here: https://www.zoro.co.uk/shop/cutting-tools/parting-inserts/n151-2-250-5e-insert-grade-1145/p/ZT1006152P Ouch, £160 for a minimum of 10 Incidentally - the tool is 2-7/8" long, and the insert 3/8" long.

Thread: Will they honour these prices, I wonder |

Decimal place error in the pricing. They will honour it, the online system won't even notice. I'd lay odds that all the big "thousands of items in the catalogue" firms have at least a couple of similar lurking somewhere in the list. When you stop to think creating these catalogues is a major, major undertaking. There is one item in the Farnell catalogue, stumbled on it by mistake around seven years ago, probably bought in the 1000’s since, regularly restocked and still priced at around £5…which is just 25% of the very best wholesale price. I would hazard a guess someone sells this item on eBay for a healthy markup. |
Thread: Pocketmags issues included in digital subs or not? |
10/11/2022 10:48:19 |
Jason, Pocketmags requested proof of subscription A partly redacted copy of my bank statement and a screen capture of my subscription status from www.classicmagazines.co.uk was sufficient Access now restored Regards Martin |
09/11/2022 17:04:41 |
Selecting ‘Activate Subscription’ does not even offer either of the two titles on my existing account The same occurs with a fresh ‘new’ account (different browser) so presumably it’s an issue for new subscribers and not just existing ones Message now sent to their support system

I’ve got ongoing direct debit print and digital subs to both mags (a month or so from renewal) I’m still receiving print copies, I have still got access to the digital ones via the archive link but there are no issues beyond august 2022 showing as being available on Pocketmags, either on their website or via the respective apps. Is this to be expected under the new ownership or do I need to do something? |

Why estimate usage or use a plug in device when a meter to the exact same standards of accuracy as would be used for your whole house metering, or solar export metering costs in the region of £25 (new) Fix to the wall, four wires to connect.

Good news, everyone... there is work in hand with converting the archives, although it will take a little while. Neil No rush at all I have a 100% functioning workaround, that. if 'flash' hasn't been removed, requires one config file editing and one standalone program adding. it should work with W7-10 without issue (only tested so far on W10) AND it requires zero work at your end. I'll document it here in time |
Thread: The demise of UK fossil fuel Power Stations |

Posted by Stuw on 18/01/2021 12:16:13:
The coal fired power stations / boilers were inefficient (~ 22%) There wasn’t a single coal fired power station in the UK operating in 1990 with a thermal efficiency under 30 percent 22% is in the region of sub 60MW units dating from the 1950’s and earlier equipped with chain grate boilers, phased out or permanently mothballed in the early 1980’s The top performing 500MW and 660MW units at the likes of Drax, Rugeley, and Ratcliffe were all operating between 35 and 37%. Even the very worst of the 500MW units were operating at around 31-33% by the early 1980’s, as were smaller two shifting 120MW units on 160 bar steam conditions.

Agree with Gavlar, pay with Paypal & no item is received you get a full refund. Tony As I have mentioned here previously you cannot always rely on PayPal ‘protection’ for certain classes of goods. Equipment used in the home workshop CAN easily fall foul of the PayPal terms and conditions especially when they are in most cases the sole arbiter For instance: In the current UK PayPal agreement (link below)Ineligible items and transactions under PayPal Buyer Protection
https://www.paypal.com/uk/webapps/mpp/ua/useragreement-full Having experienced the totally dire and utterly bizarre PayPal ‘customer service’ and ‘legal’ department based in Dublin a few years ago upon receiving a counterfeit item I hold the position that they were and possibly remain a company standing well apart from every other high street financial institution operating in the UK and the EU. |

Thread: VAT changes post Brexit |
04/01/2021 22:41:05 |
I’ve heard mention elsewhere that this ‘collect VAT at source across the world thing’ is to be adopted by the rest of the EU later in 2021, the UK is, by virtue of the exit, just ahead of the curve. Some suppliers of services like web hosting, even where they have no UK/EU presence and where the hosting equipment and the domain name are essentially nothing to do with the EU/UK, have charged VAT at a rate depending on the location of the purchaser for several years. They do supply a legitimate VAT invoice. But there are suppliers of the same services that simply stuck two fingers up at whoever and charge EU/UK customers the same as everyone else.
