Thread: Looking for a lightweight and flexible USB 3.0 Cable
01/10/2023 14:23:47

Thanks, Ian

I was nervous about doing that, because of stories about USB 3.0 interfering with both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi

I have a rather nice little Motic C-mount camera, but the USB 3.0 cable that came with it is bulky, heavy, and too stiff !

Type A connector for the computer, and the’double-decker’ Type B for the camera … The big problem is the clip-on Ferrite, located on a loop of cable near the camera connector.

First : A question for our Electronics experts … Does the Ferrite need to be located at the camera-end or would it still do its job if located near the mid-point of the cable ?

Second : can anyone suggest a suitable replacement cable ? … Flat and/or Flexible, and preferably without an enormous Ferrite contraption on it.

Thanks

Ahh … I remember a fairly convoluted discussion about that in the RSSOC *

Final consensus was that the circumference doesn’t change.

I have just stumbled across the Zoom search engine

[ no, not the Zoom that got us through Covid]

… hidden in plain sight, on https://www.sizes.com and many others !

.

Have a look at this search: **LINK**

https://www.sizes.com/search.php?zoom_sort=0&zoom_query=british+association&zoom_per_page=10&zoom_and=0

and then scroll to the bottom of the page, for the explanatory link

This is a modestly-priced localised search engine for your specific site

…Surely what we need here

… I commend it to the developers !!

Thread: Which thread is recommended, please?
01/10/2023 07:10:30

It is ‘sad but true’ that the standardisation and mass-production of ‘Metric’ threads has made their use a no-brainer.

The BA series, and the Swiss Thury series which inspired it, were both developed by Scientists, and are scientifically elegant … By contrast, the Metric series is much simplified, for the sake of expediency.

You can make the equivalent of a pin pull out connection with a couple of drawing pins in the jaws of a wooden clothes peg and a bit of plastic to separate them.

.

So then there’s only the battery and the alarm to find or make

Would a simple 'pull-the-pin' alarm do the job ? .

I hope so … it’s very much like I suggested angel

A quick & dirty solution would be to buy a ‘bag alarm’ as used for luggage, etc. … then attach your chain/wire/string/ whatever to the two parts of that.

Hi, Thanks for your reply. I can’t see how it’s complicated , if a person has spent £8000 on kit after a year he should be able to say how much he’s saved.

It doesn’t matter what size batteries or other kit he’s got ,the only thing that matters is total cost and yearly saving, so it’s really very simple.

I don’t know whether this will help or not, Maurice … My brother has a system notionally specified at 4.44 kW and it has a Kodak branded battery with a capacity of 5.12 kWh, and a reasonably fancy controller.

The snapshot that he sent me recently [from North West England] showed this :

.

Which tells me that he purchased no electricity that day, and exported too little to mention.

What that would mean to any of us, in our own personal circumstances, is for us to work-out.

Very interesting, and encouraging, Rob … provided the rates move in the right direction.

Turning to the other side of the coin … I now have a reasonable ‘feel’ for what my modest electricity requirements might be, and it looks like an adequate solar array would fit on the new roof … so I had a look at this [which is what has replaced the Feed In Tariff] : **LINK**

https://www.shellenergy.co.uk/info/terms/smart-export-guarantee/tariff-guide

sad at 3.5 pence per kWh, paid annually; it seems that there might be better ways to dispose of any surplus electricity produced … perhaps a nice little electro-forming tank for making stuff ?

Does the team have any better ideas ?

Ron

I have no idea what there Irish operation is like, but I have in the past had excellent service from Richard Austin Alloys … they don’t seem to publish lists on the web, but they do, inevitably, have off-cuts of various materials and I purchased a good off-cut of Aluminium Tooling Plate from the Manchester branch.

I would suggest you give the Dublin branch a call … not ‘bargain basement’ prices, but realistic.
