Hi Wade, You should be able to buy a manual from lathes.co.uk or machinemanuals. There is also an Elliot group here, I assume you are already a member. Thor Edited By Thor 🇳🇴 on 06/05/2023 11:27:20 |

Hi Ron, Welcome to the forum. There are many books about the subject, like "Screwcutting in the Lathe (Workshop Practice series #3), and videos: that may be of help. Thor Edited By Thor 🇳🇴 on 03/05/2023 07:26:01 |

Thread: Simple question (I think) |
21/04/2023 12:02:27 |
I think they have a slightly curved inside, the more accurate/sensitive levels have less curvature than a coarser one. Thor Edited By Thor 🇳🇴 on 21/04/2023 12:04:46 |
Thread: Lathe cutting tool height |
20/04/2023 10:49:32 |
I have looked at the advice given in "How to Run a Lathe" but have always been told to place the cutting edge at the lathe centre and that is what I have done. When using a long boring bar may be slightly above. 3/64" above per inch diameter seems a lot to me. It will be interesting to see what the experts say. Thor |
Thread: CAD for beginners |

Hi David, If you want to try 3D CAD you might try FreeCAD, Fusion360 has a free version and you might check out Solid Edge CE. It has been discussed on the forum before, a couple of links:

Thread: Tool post dovetail angle |
15/04/2023 17:53:31 |
Hi Gareth, When I made a QCTP for my small lathe I used a 60 deg. cutter for the dovetails. The holder has worked well for the past two decades. Thor |

Cheers for the reply dave and thor ( sounds like a norwegian folk group ). what sort of prices are we talking for a chinese lathe and have you any links for the sites that sell them cheers lee Hi Lee, If you are in the UK there are several suppliers, a few links below: ***Link*** ArcEutrotrade (Sieg lathes) ***Link*** Warco ***Link*** Axminster There are many other suppliers but you will get an idea of the price level for Chines lathes. I have an old 290 lathe similar to the Warco WM290, it has served me well for the past decade. Thor |

Hi Lee, Welcome to the forum. If you have a friend that knows about lathes you could ask him to check out any second hand lathe you may want to buy. A second hand Myford may be more expensive than a Boxford. If you buy a new lathe, buy from a reputable seller. The size of your lathe depends on what you want to make, and remember that you can do small work on a larger lathe. Thor |

Thread: Carbide end mills in a hobby machine? your experiences please. |
06/02/2023 10:52:13 |
I have a few carbide cutters and mainly use them for roughing cuts, as David George says they cut even hard spots in a casting. Most of the milling I do with HSS cutters since I can grind the end teeth on endmills and slotdrills. Thor |
Thread: VFD sizing |
03/02/2023 18:13:55 |
Hi John, Your 1500W VFD should handle your motor without problems, just program your VFD with the max current of your motor nameplate. I assume you have a manual for your VFD. Thor Edited By Thor 🇳🇴 on 03/02/2023 18:31:41 |
Thread: Hi all. Newbie here. |

Hi Dickie, A metal turning lathe can be used to make many kinds of tools in addition to model engines. A friend of mine built his own forge and is making knifes, I have one of them. I haven't done much casting (only ally), so good luck with your projects. Thor |

Thread: Belt or direct drive lathe |
23/01/2023 18:50:26 |
Hi Frank, Welcome to the forum. If you with belt drive means a lathe where you change belt position on the pulley to change speeds this method will give you increased torque with low speeds compared to a lathe where speeds is varied electronically. I would prefer a lathe with brushless motor over a brushed one. On my Chinese lathe I can change the belt and in addition have VFD so I get variable speed in two ways. Thor |

Hi Vincent, Welcome to the forum. If you can find a second hand lathe in good condition you will get a good lathe. You may find that a good Boxford is cheaper than a Myford. Don't be afraid to buy a new Chinese lathe from a reputable dealer, my Chinese lathe is ten years old and has not given me any problems. It is the ham-fisted operator that is the cause of bad work, not the lathe. Good luck. Thor |
Thread: Steel to make a collet chuck |
12/01/2023 17:43:03 |
Hi Pat, Welcome to the forum. I made an ER 32 chuck for my small lathe using mild steel. I have used the chuck often for several years without problems. With the use I have I guess the collet chuck will last longer than me. Thor |
