Thread: What Did You Do Today 2021
18/10/2021 09:01:23

Hi Bernard,

Thanks for your reply

Yes definitely a handy piece of kit, made for the job in hand but I've no doubt I'll use it again.

I'm slowly getting used to the Sherline lathe. Have to say so far entirely happy with this machine it has yet to disappoint me.

Today some taper turning on the con rod for the beam engine.

No offset facility on the tailstock so I made the attachment shown in the photograph. Got the idea from Mike's workshop. Mike's design has more detail but mine incorporates a small thrust bearing.

Whoever set this machine up at the factory did a great job

Hi Brian,

Yes "Falcon" it was and a real good time. Friendly staff, very chatty and helpful.

Thanks for the tips J.H., all noted for future reference.

Never been to Norfolk before, our first visit.

One20210923_111508.jpg highlight has been a mini cruise on the broads.

The launch powered by this little beast easily handling 12 passengers

According to the helm this little compound cost £10,000

Beautiful county, must come again

Thread: Sherline lathe
31/08/2021 13:28:24

Hi All,

A quick update and a question.

But first thanks to Rod and Dave, I fully agree with them regarding Millhill supplies, great service, easy to deal with.

New lathe below, initial impressions very favourable, excellent build quality and the little use I've had, enjoyed very much. Looking forward to equipping with additional tooling, chucks etc.

The question. Is there such a thing as a drill chuck arbour with an MT0 taper to a JT1 taper. I can't find one anywhere, does this size exist?

thanks Geoff

Hi Gents,

Thanks for the replies, Millhill supplies is a useful link.

Nigel thanks for the offer but on this occasion I have decided to buy new, never owned a brand new lathe, now is the time.

Cheers Geoff

Hi All,

I've managed to get some cash together so decided to buy a house lathe for the winter months

A Sherline fits my requirements, no rack feed but otherwise what I am looking for.

So where to buy, has anyone any personal experience of buying a new sherline lathe that they would like to share?

Thanks geoff

Thread: Ballaarat construction series

Luker, that's a fine little engine you've made and in such a short space of time. Enjoyed the video doesn't she run well.

If I was 30 odd years younger I'd be tempted to have a go, but not now, not enough time and too many other things to do.

In the 20 or so years I have been visiting Australia I have been to the coastal town of Busselton on many occasions. First spotted the full size Ballaarat in 2018 not longer after it took pride of place in the visitor centre. A handsome engine beautifully restored. At the time I commented that it would be suitable for modelling and low and behold here we are. I like others will enjoy you're build series.

Are you an Aussie Luker? All the best

Thread: Involute gear cutters?
23/06/2021 13:22:17

I think they're numbered 1 to 8

Number 1 cutters for a large number of teeth down to number 8 which cuts gears with 13  teeth.

Some years ago I bought 3 cutters numbers 6,7 and 8 to cut 3 gears 20t, 16t and 13t. all cutters around 25 quid each from rdg in halifax.

The cutters were great, still using them now

Thread: Drummond vs Myford change gears
08/06/2021 12:55:15

I've never come across proper Drummond change gears until recently and they are absolutely massive compared to the Myford gears I have been using over the last 10 years

Ady, in 10 years you've never seen genuine drummond gears? Unusual to buy and own a drummond with no standard gears? There are usually a few in tow.

Totally agree with Lee's comments. The Myford/drummond M type has 3 faults, 1 and 2 the spindle and tailstock barrel are too small, the spindle bore is too small and both have 1 morse tapers and 3 the rack feed with the single gear is operates the "wrong way". (CR*P) The last one is easy to remedy but 1 and 2 requires some serious engineering. Other than that it beats the ml7 hands down, but of course that is not reflected in second hand lathe prices

Thread: Mini internet boiler
20/05/2021 18:13:29

Oops 10 psi

20/05/2021 17:11:22

I Bought one of the mini boilers available on the internet, thought it may be of interest to some.

I modified it by adding an adaptor a globe valve and a home made displacement oiler.

Not sure what pressure it operates at but would guess around 10 tpi

I have a small collection of mini engines and this boiler powers them all although not for long, running time about 4 or 5 minutes

Pictured is a mini muncaster 7/16" bore and going like the clappers

Thread: beam engine
08/05/2021 12:03:34

You'll have even more fun when you come to figuring out the Watts parallel motion linkage at the other end of the beam. Enjoy!

Hi Pete, no I'm ok with that it's sorted. My main problem was establishing the optimum position for the crank pin at tdc and bdc but Geoff G put me right on that.

Atb and take care Geoff

06/05/2021 19:07:17

Hey I'm learning all the time here

Duncan I assume when you say in your first sentence "crank axis" you mean crankshaft axis?

The example I'm looking at is as you describe, the horizontal distance is half the beam length.

Thanks for your comments

Hi Geoff,

Perfect reply, thank you.

After reading your first and second paragraph I feel a little dumb because when you think about it's all fairly obvious, but not initially for me!!!!!

Thanks again. I shall press on

Geoff

For my next project I am making a beam engine, not specified which one as yet just looking at basic theory.

Ok a first question. The engine will have a crankshaft attached to a crank disc and a crank pin. What will be the position of the crank pin centre when the piston is at either TDC and/or BDC.

From a beginners viewpoint it's easy to assume that they will be on a vertical centre line through the face of the crank disc and therefore at 90 degrees to a horizontal centre line. Is this correct?

No mention of cost of the early ones.

Mine is from 1974/ 75 period.

It cost over £40 which was a serious chunk of money then.

I expect you could buy an inferior one for £40 now but how much for 1970's spec now?

Well done David top quality stuff.

Are you going to set it up with that boiler of yours?

Go on let's see it running on steam.
