Thread: Issue 4444
29/06/2013 23:10:17
Posted by Cyril Bonnett on 29/06/2013 11:18:14:

...

I was amazed to read from the editor, edition 4459, that she thinks large scale road running machines that require heavy machinery should be included in the future!

  • Did I actually say that? I think it was actually carefully worded in order to generate a bit of debate. Times have changed over the last even ten years and, as Jason says, there is an increasing interest in larger scale model making. The magazine should not ignore that fact. That is not to say (and never will be to say) that we are losing interest in the more traditional.

While further on in the magazine we have images from the Harrogate Exhibition that show’s that there is still a vast sweep of models that don’t run on steam being constructed.

  • Precisely - which is why we do exhibition reports in the magazine ... in order to cover the very broad subject of model engineering. You would not believe how hard I try to persuade makers of the unusual and wonderful to write about their experiences/ interests. Sometimes it works. Often it doesn't. As has been said, not everyone is keen to write.

The magazine should be rebranded prehaps ‘old glory model steam’.

Instead of the relentless obsession with steam can we go back to model engineering and all it encompasses.

  • Relentless obsession??? Hardly....

Thread: Shaping Machines
18/06/2013 12:39:51
Posted by Stephen Benson on 17/06/2013 20:34:37:

I like shaping machines ... I was very interested the new series in ME but was a bit bemused to have to wade through lot of stuff about the new editor and then a whole section making spinning chuck which needed a few more pictures I felt as I could not visualise it myself.

Hi Stephen. The next installment is more about tooling and less about the editor (you will be glad to hear!). The story about the spinning chuck happened many years ago, long before Mick ever contemplated writing an article for M.E. so I don't suppose he was thinking of taking pics at the time.

I have had a few good comments about this article. I hope you continue to enjoy reading it. It will be in every other issue (more or less).

Indeed Graham

I have sent Mr Drake a very polite PM which he has either not seen or has chosen to ignore.

We have a very approachable advertising manager, Kev, if you would care to give him a call.

Please - no more advertising your own business on this forum.

This is the second time of asking.... !

Thread: Lister Drawings
10/06/2013 16:39:44

Yes, Jeff, I did read your comments.
In a nutshell, again, if there are problems with the drawings, they are not created by the illustrator. I can not put it more succinctly.

You describe the drawings as 'bad and poorly laid out'.
Can I suggest you contact George Punter directly in order to clarify any problems? Having met him I found him a very pleasant, highly intelligent and very approachable gentleman. The work he has produced over many years is quite remarkable both in terms of quantity and quality.
George has contributed to this forum previously.

The Illustrator copies the author's drawings and the editor checks the illustrator's drawings against the author's original drawings. Only extremely rarely does an error end up in print that was the creation of the illustrator and in such an event it will be bacause the editor has not picked up the illustrator's error. If you regard something the author has drawn as erroneous, that's a different matter.

The illustrator does not add anything to or take anything from the author's original. Jeff, when you say:
'I can't believe the contributors' own drawings are this bad and as poorly laid out as the ones shown in M.E.' you are doing both a disservice. The illustrator's drawings are very precise copies of the original drawings. Call this vigorous defence if you like. It is simply fact.

Thread: Why no updates for MEW only ME
05/06/2013 22:54:00

David is Editor of MEW and has recently moved house. He is freelance and, as such, works hours to suit himself. He is still an administrator but probably does not attend to the website on a daily basis as he used to do. Other than that, nothing has changed as far as I know. I thought it best just to make these facts clear.

I am afraid to say that this issue has fallen foul of the partial repeat trap.

Readers will have noticed that part of the last issue (4455) was repeated in 4457, together with some more new drawings.
Apologies to all for this error but please be assured that you will not miss any part of the series on account of this.

Thanks Andrew.
Of course, the purpose is to enlighten mag readers who don't frequent the forum. Maybe it will lead them to do so. And if they don't - they might have learned something... maybe...

Putting myself in the shoes of an anonymous contributor to a forum - any forum, not necessarily this one - it would not bother me in the least if my text was lifted from the forum and printed elsewhere. In fact I would be glad my thoughts were considered interesting.
If I write something on a forum, am I not, by default, giving my permission for others to read it? What is the difference between publishing on a forum and publishing in print? It's all 'making public' at the end of the day.

If there are half a dozen contributors to a thread it would be utterly impractical to contact each and every one of them, wait for them to respond, etc. etc. before printing the thread in the magazine. If you think it is necessary to do so then the whole idea is dead in the water.

I am disheartened by some of the the posts above, especially at the intimation of discourtesy. I am glad now to see that some others see it as I do.

If you would like to see 'From the Forum' stopped please let me know.

Jo, I have sent you a PM.

The hope was, from the beginning, that publishing extracts from the forum would add interest to the magazine. The substance of the discussion is the only reason for choosing the text to print. It is completely irrelevant who is writing. We will never reveal the identity of a writer, hence the use of initials or short nicknames. We don't intend to publish personal opinions (other than 'how to' ) - just practical advice and ideas. In this way it is slightly different from Posbag, which is the place to express your opinions on all kinds of matters... and sign your name in full!

Thread: Is this forum usage more MEW than ME?
07/05/2013 13:24:00

Going back to Ian's original post, I think I would tend to agree. The more frequent posters tend to be MEW readers with general engineering queries/advice. I think also, if you look at the general profile of the readership of each magazine you will indeed find amongst MEW readers folk who enjoy forums, whereas amongst ME readers you will find folk who enjoy more traditional forms of socialising and, yes, they like to be in the workshop rather than at a keyboard. Without wishing to generalise over much, the age profile is probably different too, which is linked with the point above. MEW as a magazine covers so many interests apart from model making, as John has suggested above. Therefore many MEW readers - who have no interest whatsoever in model making - will visit the forum. Long may it continue!

What I most like about this forum is the willingness of so many people to help out if they can, regardless of the specific subject.
