Thread: Best universal (horizontal + vertical) milling machine |

Ian, The mill in the pictures is a TOS FA3A, I bought it to do some of this traction engine stuff, as it's the next size up from the Elliott U2, and has quite a bit more table travel, and rapids as well , ( excellent for gear cutting, saves a lot of hand winding when returning the table for the next gear tooth ) Here is a picture of the Elliott U2 ( same as a Victoria ), it shows the versatility of the swivelling vertical head when used for horizontal boring, also a picture of the U2 doing some gearcutting. Richard.

Here's another use for a horizontal mill, horizontal drilling and reaming of a large casting which is too big to get in a drilling machine, Also using the same mill to cut the gear. I've also got an Elliott U2 universal mill with a swivelling table, A lovely machine but I've never needed to use the swivel table, Richard. |
Thread: Shrink Fitting C/I Cylinder Liners |
03/10/2013 09:37:36 |
John, The 6" I referred to is the scale of the traction engine, IE half size, the cylinder bore is 4 1/4" diameter, with the OD of the liner being 5" Here are some pictures to show what I mean about the steam jacketing and the steam passages milled into the outside of the liner. Richard. |
02/10/2013 17:24:46 |
John, Usually full size steam engines are fitted with a separate liner so the cylinder can be steam jacketed, It makes the casting a lot simpler, also the liner can be replaced, On my 6" Burrell the steam passages from the valve chest are partly machined into the outside of the liner which has a 3/8" wall thickness, also is steam jacketed. Phil, well done! ...............Like you say , speed and confidence ! Richard. |

John, Get a Tom Senior , I've got a Tom Senior M1, it does vertical, horizontal, has power feeds , coolant, loads of them around, plenty of attachments available ( rotary tables ,slotting heads etc ), There's usually something on e-bay, I wouldn't want to be without mine. They are not too pricey either, should get a good one for £1000 ish. Richard.

Thread: Shrink Fitting C/I Cylinder Liners |

Phil, Do you not think your "solid liner" might be cooling the main cylinder block too quickly, so that it shrunk onto the "liner" too soon ? Richard. |
Thread: Eccentric Question |
30/09/2013 12:40:00 |
Hello Paul, I am building a 6" Burrell , castings by EKP Supplies, been building it for 2 1/2 years now, hopefully get it finished next year, Richard. |

Quentin, Use the grub screws for setting up only, when you are happy withe engines performance fit keys to the crank and the eccentrics, ensuring they will never move during use. I'm building a 6" scale traction engine, on the drawings the eccentrics are shown fitted with grub screws only, No way would I leave it at that ! I will fit decent keys as I have suggested. Are you building a locomotive or what ? Richard. |

Thread: tom senior m1 arbour |
24/09/2013 11:57:18 |
Alan, I fully agree, I've used large horizontal mills for years without using the keyway, used large cutters with no problem at all, the keyway would possibly be an advantage in some cases but not 100% necessary, however, I would use the keyway for very heavy cuts. I've got 2 Tom senior M1's , I've used the horizontal arbor a few times but have never needed to use the keyway. Richard. |

Cliff, If you are putting on courses either for profit or non profit, you will still find yourself having to conform to "Health and safety" regulations, also you will need public liability insurance , electrical equipment will need PAT testing for safety etc, etc, It will soon start to cost YOU money ! Richard. |

Has anyone ever fitted a screw cutting gearbox to a Boxford BUD or CUD lathe ? Are there any castings or drawings to make one ? Richard, |
