Thread: How Much is this Costing Me?

I'm not intending to have a go any individuals here, but the conversation within this thread goes to highlight one of the problems we humans have and that is that we can adapt to almost anything, even if it is to our common detriment.

I presume that most of us realise that there is no reasonable explanation with regard to the massive price hikes that have happend and are also scheduled to happen, yet this thread shows that not only are many accepting of it, but we are also chatting amongst ourselves as to how we are going to get along with it and somehow cope with whatever the consequences are.

Saving energy is always the best idea, but I'd like to know how, within the space of six or seven months, an average £1300-£1500 annual home energy bill has more than doubled, with some talk of an increase towards £4000+ by next year.

At this rate, charity, food banks, and soup kitchens are going to become the norm and I'm getting the feeling we're sleepwalking right into that scenario.

Martin.

with regard to power bills (and mortgages) WE have no say in the overall price determined by market rates, it is not a case of blindly accepting what is happening as we have no control.

I note you have not listed our OTHER options!

Charity, food banks, soup kitchens are the norm for a lot of people - where have you been?

the scenario is already here and it is not only in this country, look around you, open your eyes and get your head out of the sand.

I remember mortgage rates of 15% and having no say in the matter other than to lump it and pay up.

If you do not know why energy prices have risen, you need to get out more, the facts are there but you seem to just ignore them.

there are non so blind as those that do not want to see.

come on! we are waiting for your solution...........

I've raised points, you've agreed with them, then you tell me I'm too blind to see and have my head in the sand and then you tell me to provide a solution.

I'd be genuinely interested in your explanation of energy price rises as I really do not know why this is happening

You should be asking why the price keeps going up and why they're now preparing us for a £4000 annual bill, come January next year.

Thread: Well done the lionesses!

Well, they could not be the Lions as there is already a pride of them... but as a male contributor to Woman's Hour recently pointed out, in the real feline-maximus world it's the lion-esses who do the hunting, and in teams!

(See Robert A's observation on "it's coming home", above...)

I don't know about Womans Hour, just visit any town or city after closing time on a weekend and you'll see it in action.

Saudi Arabia is buying cheap Russian oil & gas and using it for its domestic market. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia is selling its own very expensive oil & gas to the rest of the world, making a killing in the process and very neatly circumventing western sanctions against Russia.

It's could be a cold and expensive winter in the west.

Go woke, go broke.

The Halifax building society did it recently with their ridiculous personal pronoun badges and caused many customers to close their accounts in protest.

Thread: Tens Machine
02/08/2022 13:08:52

Just got a TENS machine myself and I must say it is quite effective in blocking the back ache/sciatica I'm having at the moment.

The unit I have can be switched between 10-60 minutes in duration, with a default of 20.

There are about 20 programmed settings which can be varied in their intensity, but I find about 70% power output to be good for me.

I too experienced a couple enormous shocks the other day and thought that was due to me trying one of the other programmes, but it actually turned out to be that the gel pads weren't fully plugged in, so I'm assuming the unit must have generated a voltage sufficient to jump the gap. disgust

DeskProto is designed for this sort of work.

It has quite a few strategies to help optimise its toolpaths. There is also free version available, but with limitations.

Thread: Advice on how best to convert a 3/16x40 Plug Tap into a Taper Tap

I'd give it a go with a diamond file. You'd have nice control of the taper & clearance that way.

Whilst I dislike the idea that hospital visitors have to pay to park it's not actually the hospitals (at least in Cambridge ) that are doing the charging. The entire car park burden was handed over to NCP to run the thinking being that the NHS was there to spend money on patients and not on car parks and their associated running costs.

That's not unique to the UK, in fact I dare say it happens in most jurisdictions. The parking here is part of and owned by the hospital but like yours is subcontracted to a third-party to run. Doing it that way is full of advantage to the hospital:

- although the hospital owns the parking (it's part of the hospital) they don't have to get involved in day to day running, charging parking fees, problems with users etc. They just take a periodic stipend from the third party.

- if you don't like the parking fees .... talk to the third party, not the hospital.

- problems at the automatic checkout .... talk to the third party

- insufficient parking to handle the volume of patients? ... talk to the third party.

- got charged a $50 parking fine (by the third-party) for parking in a non-approved (but non-blocking) spot because your appointment time had gone by and there were no spaces left? Nothing to do with the hospital ....... talk to the third party.

- Don't think the third party has any legal legitimacy to level fines anyway? .... talk to the third party.

Why would any hospital do it any other way?

Because they're supposed to care? indecision

Thread: THE MIDLAND - THE ONLY SHOW IN TOWN !
28/06/2022 10:22:53

It's clear from the comments, that day by day, our lives are being made smaller. Travelling anywhere will soon be seen as selfish.

The fact that relatively few have almost complete control of all the World's resources, means the availability & price of those resources can be altered as required.

Once resources are owned in totality, the need to extract a monetary profit ftom them starts to disappear, as there is nothing left to buy.

This is what we're moving into.

Thread: Sad consequence of rising costs
27/06/2022 11:29:01

I can't attribute this quote, to any particular source as it'll be seen as political. face 1

"...'no point' in giving workers pay rises because price spiral would cancel out benefit".

So I'm not expecting much in the way of help for what's coming our way.

The 'Heat or eat?' way of thinking is gradually becoming the new normal, as is queueing at food banks.
