I got 5 of eBay, arrived flat tipped, I use 3 of them for , lube oil, cylinder oil & for dropping Loctite / studloc on to some of the smaller items that needed it.I use a bit of tape to seal off that one so air doesn't get into the barrel. I don't fill the barrels fully, the two 5ml ones are filled to only 2ml ( oils ) & the one for Loctite ( 2ml ) has only approx' 0.5ml in, as needed, all ideal for model making. George. |

Dr_GMJN ...'Also cleaned up all the Little end pin end, the stud ends and bolt heads - most of them had prominent pips:... These generally indicate that your tool tip centre height is incorrect; either too high or more is the probability too low, needs adjusting. Never the less superb workmanship, looking to see it running, well done that man!. George. |

Hi Chris i have ER25 collet chuck MT2 taper which i use on the Mill. I would not be without them. I also have a Clarkson autolock chuck. Maybe the Clarkson is more accurate. The ER collets are a great addition to the lathe or mill. You will not go far wrong buying a set. I believe they do Imperial & metric. Mine are metric, but do hold some imperial tooling & drill bits. Steve. Same here but without the Clarkson chuck & I have imperial collets in.. 1/8 - 3/16 - 1/4 - 3/8, commonly used sizes George. |

I removed the guard from my WM250 soon after I got it back in 2012; never missed it. I just took the spindle out of the plastic holder & left the switch in the closed position. I now use a full length acrylic guard of my own making with attachment to the bec via brackets & neodyniiinnnnumm

Thread: Temperature control when grinding HSS tool-blanks? |

+1 on Peter's "little and often" grind / plunge into water method. Used it for many years, never had a microcrack issue with HSS. I use room temperature water but am not sure whether hot water or cold water would have much effect at all on HSS. + 1 .. Me too, although most of my cutting uses a tangential HSS holder, so really only a light touch up when needed. Any other heavier turning I have insert type tooling as needed. George. |

Thread: Gear Train noise? |
14/10/2020 13:55:22 |
Going back to the gear adjustment; I set the backlash gap as per Old Al said, using paper & set gap on each set of gears working up from the bottom... the paper IIRC was .003" folded giving .006" gap, some may say .004" is preferable. I used motor cycle chain lubricant spray on the gear teeth, slightly thicker than SAE32 but not as thick as transmission oil. George. |
14/10/2020 11:59:43 |
I have a WM250 & have made a banjo stop adjuster to set the gear train whereas I can take the gear train in & out of engagement. I got the idea from Journeymans workshop where he has a write up on fabricating the banjo stop adjustment, works a real treat.I only use the self act on long turning jobs so gear is mainly out of mesh, only noise I have is belt drive.See below, in it, at the end is a clip of my machine running with gears in/out of engagemant worth doing. Thread: Stuart 10V Big-End Bearing Lubrication? |
11/10/2020 13:45:54 |
Hi, as you mentioned you won't be running it for any extended period so I wouldn't worry about it. My S10V is only for display, as my other models, so it rarely runs for any period longer than a couple of minutes to keep things free. When I give my models a run, on air, I generally put a few drops of lube oil in the crankshaft cups ( home made ) & drop a few drips down the cheeks of the big end & let capilliary action do the rest. "Used Borax" Another old alchemists trick. Me too, Seems I've been lucky too Regards Ian.
Edited By Circlip on 09/10/2020 10:18:13 It seems that 'Borax' is still in general use by silver smiths & jewelry makers having looked at a few 'YouTube' videos, they have shown 'Borax cones' that they mix up in a wet solution ( Water ). They seem to vouch it is still quite an effective flux. I have also seen the silver smith on the 'Repair shop' programme that used borax, IIRC it was to re- silver solder a regimental badge back on to a 'Swagger stick' George.

Thread: Shopvac Recommendations (Hoover, Vacuum Cleaner, Dust/Chip Collection) |
09/10/2020 12:16:07 |
I replaced my old Vax wet & dry vacuum with a smaller but more powerfull wet & dry cleaner from Screwfix ( usual disclaimer ) which also has the blow function... Titan TTB350 vac 1300W, wet & dry plus a pack of 10 spare bags, all at a very reasonable price, it certainly has the suction to shift stuff, the only down side it has a shorter hose than the old Vax.
