Thread: Telescopic bore gauges
18/04/2020 11:13:49

I have a set of Draper telescopic bore gauges, (both anvils move) and agree with the comments above regarding minor fettling etc.

However two important points I have found are:

  1. when tightening the adjustment knob hold the gauge at the very end of the handle just below the locking knob.

  2. then using only one finger to gently move the handle to set the anvils

If the handle is held lower down nearer to the work an error occurs when the knob is tightened.

I find repeatable results within 0.0005”

Thread: Where is best to buy??
03/06/2019 12:22:58

The following are extracts of emails between myself and CHRONOS. I leave readers to make up their own minds.

To CHRONOS

Hi Recently received 1/4" Brass Hex x 300mm ordered through your ebay site on 30/5/19, price £3.92. Rather annoyed to see that on your online website the price is only £2.64. Why the discrepancy?

Reply from CHRONOS

Hi

Our minimum order a the the website is £6.00- ebay does not allow this on there site, also ebay take 10-15%of the total from us s well as listing fees etc, so it is generally better to shop at the website rather than ebay

Hi,

I notice Ramon Wilson used to post on this forum but I have not seen any posts from him for a while. Anyone know if he has moved to another forum?

I am trying to obtain copies of his updated plans for the ED Racer (I have the one in MEW) anyone know of a source?

I am also trying to obtain plans for a Boll Aero 4.4 engine if anyone can point me in the right direction.

Seasons Greetings to everyone.

Thread: VMC Spindle Bearings
18/04/2013 21:11:14

On another forum someone posted that there is a 5 bearing modification for Chester 626 Mills / Warco VMC mill. Does anyone know of this modification for VMC mill spindles?

Congratulations Martin your microscope is a credit to you.

I know Ramon and other are using Titanium 'hangers'. Does the Titanium have to be 100% purity? I notice on ebay that Titanium wire is available but is only 97% pure.

PS Has anyone used printer inks, and if so with what results.

I found that the bolt holes on my Warco were not on the same PCD or equidistant!

27/01/2013 12:48:03

I've had a Warco VMC for several years and have found the following mods very useful

DRO essential in my opinion

6" head raising block. 4" probably all that's required

Spindle lock to make tool changes easier

Draw bar release tool

Inverter Drive very useful.

Problems;

Original machine travel specs. did not match catalogue

Table soft easily marked

One shot oiler not very good some points over oiled other starved of oil.

Would be useful if Y axis travel was greater.

Thread: Unable to access digital version.
18/07/2012 09:55:44

Hi David,>>

Thanks for replying.>>

I followed the instructions from an email received from My Hobby Store titles 'Your latest Digital Issue has arrived' Using a PC this directed me to log in - go to My Account - Digital Issues.> This came up with a 'subscriber only content warning. So went to 'My Details' to enter Subscriber No. The instructions here clearly state 'enter 10 digit number and explain where this can be obtained. No mention I can find about deleting zeros.>

Anyway the system now seems to be working thanks.

Thread: Whittle V8 - Crankshaft
14/01/2012 10:55:49
Have been reading the articles on the E.W. V8 Aero Engine with great interest.
Noticed that glow plug holes have been tapped 1/4" x 32 ME. Just reading a model aero mag where they give the glow plug thread as 1/4" x 32 UNF -EF where EF is Extra Fine.
(Brian Winch RCM&E July 2008) Hope this may help.

Thread: Myford S7 Spindle Markings

Looking on the O.D. of the spindle, at the gear end just outboard of the
adjusting collar, are engraved -3. Does anyone know what this refers to
Thread: MEW 184
17/12/2011 10:13:05
Think I must be reading articles in MEW too closely as a lot of articles now seem to have drawings with information and lines missing and text that does not correspond to the drawings and reference to photos that don't exist.

. Perhaps churning out so many magazines in a short period does not leave sufficient time to properly proof read articles before printing. Pity ME & MEW used to be excellent; are standards slipping?

Thanks to all who have provided information, how did we manage before WWW??

Neil, how much do you think a kit would cost and would it be possible for someone who is electrically dyslexic to build it?

The article on the Care & Lubrication of Myford S7 Lathes I'm sure was very informative.

However the oil level plug on the gearbox is situated on the right hand side of the gearbox and is not the plug shown in photo 13. Also it seems a pity that there was no mention of Rocol MTS1000 ( or equivalent) if available, which should be used on items 21,22,23,24 & 25 as detailed on the Myford Lubrication Chart. In fact if this chart had been published perhaps the article could have taken just one page instead of 5!
Thread: Super 7 Going 3 Phase
29/11/2011 17:26:30
Hi,
I'm also in the process of converting my S7 to 3 phase but in my case from single phase using a Newton Tesla VFD CL750 sytem. At least I will when the unit is delivered.

One thing that none of the available VFD conversion packages contain is a tachometer/rev counter to show spindle speed. I notice that all the Far Eastern variable speed machine tools do include a spindle read out and these are available as spares at reasonable cost, however I'm not sure if these can be altered to use on a S7 VFD set up.

I have traced the company that supplied the read outs fitted to Connoisseur lathes but at a cost of £260 +VAT etc.!!

I could use a converted bicycle trip computer however I would like to fit something a little easier to read.

Does anyone know the source of a suitable read out, even in kit form, at a reasonable cost?

Hi Ramon,
Sorry if this has been raised before, but, what has happened to all your photographs? The Picasa site seems to have been erased and so have your photos attached to these forum postings.

Thread: Myford Super 7 Gearbox - Help Required
04/11/2011 21:50:47
I have just removed the top cover from a newly acquired Myford Super 7 to enable a thorough inspection and clean out of the gearbox. Unfortunately having removed the cover I moved the upper lever ( which moves the quadrant plate) a little too far, and, you have guessed it, the locating pin A2521 & D5/1922 launched into space never to be seen again. These parts provide the A,B & C locating detent points for the upper lever.

It seems that parts are unlikely to be available from RDG/Myford so what I need to know is what is locating pin A2521 like. Is it in fact a ball bearing or a specially shaped pin and is the spring

Any help would be appreciated.

Thread: X2mill and Warco VMC
23/10/2011 11:49:21
I also have a Warco VMC.
Generally pleased with it, however recommend you check actual spindle/table movements against advertised movements!
Head spacer fitted, very useful.
DRO fitted to spindle as handle graduations not very accurate due to 'sticktion' etc.
DRO to be fitted on X & Y
Weight fitted inside spindle pulley improves cut.
Lock fitted to lock spindle for tool changing
Draw bar/ tooling removal tool made to save hammering bearings when removing R8 tooling.
Looking at Inverter drive as large gap in spindle speeds. Quoted spindle speeds are inaccurate.

Hope this helps

Steve T
