Thread: Aircraft General Discussion |

In 1958 I was a lowly National Service airman in 5004 Squadron Airfield Construction branch and we were sent on detachment to RAF Finningly to extended and reconstruct the perimeter tracks and enlarge the corners to allow the Vulcan Bombers to safely access the runway to carry out their practice circuit bumps (landings ). We had very close contact and site of the aircraft and on occasions we had to withdraw away from our working areas to allow multiple take-offs, on one occasion a plain white Vulcan arrived , the others were in camouflage , and the crew disappeared only to reappear a little while later, but when they took off you would have thought it was a Spitfire as it was practically vertical which was a super display of the power of the Vulcan, sadly missed and never to be forgotten. |

I have recently bought a Myford Super 7 lathe No SK 83292, the clutch is very noisy when operating but silent when its disengaged, to dismantle it do I remove the two allan screws and the adjustable nut at the left hand end to find out what is causing the noise ?. Thanks, Ken. |
Thread: Cutting a large hole out of plate |

I would take a cut at the max dia using a tool similar to a parting off tool, about 1/8" wide until it becomes uncomfortable then withdraw and move the tool inwards towards the centre approx.. 1/8" and machine to the same depth then withdraw and move back to the outer dia and continue using this method until I could not proceed with this tool ,then change to a thinner tool and continue as before. Best of luck. |

Metric/inch spanners have been around for years, there called "adjustable" spanners and what's the point in buying metal that is the correct size it's much more fun machining it. Ken. |

Hi Gordon , the mans name was Ernie Jackson and he lived of Nunnery Lane York, he built a 1000cc OHC twin in the late 1940's by grafting two singles together and it was before Norton's ever made one . I was in my early teens and used to visit his workshop and hover around to see his motorcycles , it had a left hand twist hand grip which operated the steering damper, he also converted a 500 cc single OHC from shaft operation to chain drive. I hope someone can find them and put up some photographs. Ken.

Thread: Using compressed air on the lathe |

Hi Bert, I agree with Brian , NEVER use an air line to clean your Lathe or any other machines,I brush down the heavy stuff then I use an old vacuum ( it has a very nice gentle mans name ) this I find is safe and adequate. Ken.

When using a Myford fixed steady (1412) on my ML7R , I find it very inconvenient to keep tapping the lower supports to centralize the metal, has anyone made adjustable threaded ones to replace the solid lower supports ? any advice would be appreciated. Thankyou. |

Hi, why not thread the shaft and put a lock nut on to it or carefully cut the nut horizontally half way through then close the gap made by the saw or slitting tool, this then makes a self locking nut. |
