Thread: My Digital subscription

Raymond, you write that you're using Firefox.
The latest version (Firefox Quantum 60.0.1) is very different from previous versions and how it handles - or doesn't - Flash, at least with Windows.
Have you tried access using another browser? (Edge, Chrome or I.E.)
I'm finding a number of websites that now only display correctly with Edge.

If you're using ver 6.0, click on Help > Troubleshooting information.
Scroll down to "Extensions" and look at Flash Control to see whether "enabled" or "False".

Thread: Nickel Plating
29/04/2018 20:52:03

OP wrote "Further to a comment on nickel plating on another thread I felt this might be better served by having 'it's own I would like to nickel plate some very small parts on a virtual one off basis. Consequently I don't particularly wish to make a big outlay to do so. "

To get back on topic, like Simon G., I plated Ni-plated many items for a motorcycle restoration some years ago.
The kit was then sold by 'Dynic Sales' and was advertised extensively in the m/cycle press of the day.
But - and it was a big but - you had also to purchase:-
An aquarium heater / aquarium aerator / amp meter / stabilised power supply or 12v battery / current controller as well as being prepared to construct various non ferrous rods from which to suspend anode & cathode on top of a plastic container.
Effective plating required control of temperature, current, agitation and a perfectly smooth surface on the steel item otherwise corrosion pitting would show up badly after plating. Again, like Simon G, I never Cu plated ferrous items first and eventually results were consistently good. (I did a petrol tank filler cap, shrouds for rear shocks, lamp bezels, Cu oil pipes and numerous steel bolts and nuts).

Bottom line? It is possible to Ni plate at home but requires one hell of a lot of aggravation and preparation. Somewhere I have the Dynic Sales instructions which are extensive. IF you really do want the buggeration of doing it for a few small items, I'll find them for you.

Thread: Case hardening powder, any advise?
19/04/2018 14:05:10

Wasn't LBSC's advice for case hardening something like this?
"get your old boots, cut into strips of leather and pack them around the item in an iron box, seal with fire clay and put in the fire, leave overnight until cool."

nuff said?

Thread: what is this tool for?

Cropping a couple of the pics followed by a "reverse image search" on Google gives no clue either !

Thread: WIN 10 again!
07/04/2018 12:34:21

The amount of web space consumed by complaints about Win10 updates is staggering.
So much unwanted 'junk' consuming resources you don't want and can't delete e.g. Cortana.
I'd have swtiched to Linux years ago but for previous investment in progs which will only run in Windows.
As for the HDD space it takes up, excluding the vast number of other files & folders it creates:-

Thread: What did you do Today 2018
04/04/2018 11:18:38

What did I do today yesterday?
SWMBO contracted Spring fever (despite the weather) and decided it was that time of year to move furniture around. So we I spent over half of the day, under instruction, shifting stuff around the lounge.
The remainder of the day was spent moving it all back again, where it was before, having endured repeated sighs, 'ummms' and 'no, that's not right".
Today - hopefully - it will be back to the workshop, where at least the same utterances will be from me.

Welcome also Jan......
Cab interior colours - I've looked in Jenkinson & Essery's book but as it's mainly LMS, it doesn't give an answer to your specific question.
This link isn't an answer either, but it might indicate that your choice is not that critical !!

As I posted before re. "mini drill" accessories to do the job....."Addendum: Presumably the similar concave-shaped, but aluminium oxide stones which are freely available for mini-drills would be as effective although not as long lasting".

Here's a Fleabuy link to the OP's question about 8 BA screws and rounding the cut surface:-

Thread: One of my vices.....
23/03/2018 15:24:33

Brian, Clive - thanks for your replies. I haven't yet found the Indian source but discovering the manufacturer was SEVO prompted a Google search. In 2016 this sorry-looking specimen was on Fleabuy:-

Also good to learn there's another satisfied user ! The only hitch to it getting more regular use is the spacing of the 3 bolting-down lugs - they don't line up with my mill table slots, so an adapter plate is necessary. Nevertheless, it is a superb bit of kit, however old.

Edit: Looks like it could be worth more than I thought ! Found this smaller, 3 piece SEVO from Germany for 350 EUR (exc VAT). https://www.machineseeker.co.uk/Machine-vise-SEVO-Sevo-2/i-1796888

Several years ago I acquired this old vice at a club auction. The name plate states "Sole UK Importer - Spencer Franklin Ltd" (who are still an active company). The 12" long vice has substantial fully moveable jaws consiting of 3 x 4, thick plates which are locked in position by the 2 cams around just about any shape. Lower plates can provide a flat register and the top plates used to grip a taper, which how it gets most use - when machining tapered loco rods. There's no maker's name or indication of country of origin or it's age. As one of the most useful items in the workshop; any info would be of interest. (I've yet to contact Spencer Franklin as given it's age would they have any records?).

"Is there a tool just for de-burring the cut end ? I was thinking along the lines of a hand held tool in a handle and just give a twist on the screw end. I can't find anything on line, do they exist?"

The answer is yes, but for me the effort involved in making one for each size was why I adopted the 'concave diamond mini drill tool' (q.v.). What you seem to be looking for was published in the M.E. 31/05/2002 p. 394.

Despite the cut-backs it's likely your local police will have a crime prevention team. If so it's worth contacting them as they often have negotiated sizeable discounts on shed & surroundings security devices. Here in Warwickshire they are very proactive and give useful advice on site. However I'm not pretending they'll turn out in the event of a break-in, even when it's actually taking place.

Thread: Digital ME & MEW Issues
18/03/2018 11:00:27

Jason asks "What's the problem with using Microsoft signin?"
For me - none, but I know of several who refuse to divulge personal information "unnecessarily" to wherever ~ no doubt influenced by data theft stories. I can understand their viewpoint without sharing (all) their concerns.
This is perhaps not the place to get into security issues with the M/soft Windows Account, but they do exist (quote) "But that central connection point comes with security and privacy risks." Maybe worth a read of:-
**LINK**
Personally, I can read an issue of MEW on my Android phone but it involves a lot of faffing about. Given my age I agree with Russell's sentiment about preferring to access on a pc. As before, my only irritant with doing so is the aggravation of not being able to"print to pdf" more than 2 pages at a time.
The PocketMags prog isn't the easiest for a user unfamiliar with Windows' idiosyncracies.

17/03/2018 23:18:14

Ian ~ I've no idea what Samsung might do with their version of Win10 but assume they drive you to use M/soft Edge. It's not my choice of browser but have to admit if I access my PocketMags account with Edge on my desktop pc, I get the same functionality as I do with Firefox Quantum (i.e. it opens with HTML5 reader and I can "print to pdf"
I don't get the requirement to enter my M/soft account details.
However, from that above, you'll appreciate I don't use any app but go through the Pocket Mags url (https://pocketmags.com/login). Have you tried doing that on your Samsung?
It's no consolation to you of course but I can "read" all the MEWs available since starting my subscription.
I have no probs either accessing them via their Android app on my phone, which will also "save to device"

Edited to remove these accursed smileys when I type quotation mark followed by full stop.

There's another thread running now "Readings app for windows" have you checked it?.

If on a smart phone or tablet you're seeing that Google Android screen which wants your Google account sign-in details, at the bottom there's a tick-box which says "Skip". That will usually allow you to proceed regardless.
On a pc, If you have the latest Firefox Quantum, you can access the mags without doing any more than just entering your Pocket Mags ID. FF will also allow you to save pages.

Thread: Readings app for windows
17/03/2018 21:19:47

'can only write that it works OK with the following set-up:-
Windows 10 Home ver: 1709. Build 16299.309
Browser: Firefox Quantum 59.0.1

This latest Firefox will open the mags in its native HTML5 reader.

The problems arise if you want to store an edition (for your own private retention & use). You can "print to pdf" but for some annoying reason, the Pocket Mags prog will only allow you to do so 2 pages at a time (well on my system anyway). This restriction means a lot of irritating work compiling a multi-page article.

".......so a quick search found......"

Rob., well found !
However at 6mm D it's unlikely to fit the chuck of a hi-speed mini drill but mounted in a drill press it might do the job. Over the years, I've learned the best way to round the cut edge is to hold the mini drill in one hand and move the bolt with the other hand in a sort of 'conical way' inside the rotating concave (harder to describe than to do !).
If the bolt is held in the vice and the rotating cutter applied, the mini drill tends to jump about quite a bit.
Yet.....with drill press and vice it should be OK.

Prompted by your reference to a "jeweller's tool" - I'll also start searching.

Thread: Digital ME & MEW Issues
14/03/2018 12:21:08

I find saving copies of my digitally-subsribed MEW irksome on the pc. It seems on my system (Firefox, Win10 and full Acrobat), I can only click on 3 selected pages of an issue to 'print to pdf'. This entails creating numerous, numbered pdf files which I then have to combine with Acrobat. (I don't want to save pages of adverts or articles of no potential interest).

As for Ray's comments about digital issues ought to be cheaper than the printed versions - is it not the case that since 2015 that VAT has been charged on e-magazines, whilst printed magazines remain zero rated?

"Sales of printed books, newspapers and magazines are exempt from VAT in the UK, while their online equivalents are taxed. VAT generated £108bn a year in the UK last year, representing 21pc of the country’s annual tax revenues."

Re: " The root of the problem is not cutting the screw to length but tiding up the cut end so it will screw in to the mating thread"
Have searched for a current source of these without success.
I use the concave, diamond-impregnated surface of this "cutter" in a hi-speed mini drill then onto the end of a cut-off BA bolt. It produces a nice rounded end without damaging the leading threads in a few seconds. It's lasted for years - only wish I could find a new spare.

Addendum: Presumably the similar concave-shaped, but aluminium oxide stones which are freely available for mini-drills would be as effective although not as long lasting.

Only help I can offer is that my S7 is of 1996 vintage and this is what hte saddle looks like compared to the one on your Fleabay link. I was about to fit a Machine-DRO kit and everything was nicely flat and square.
