Mark, might be worth hunting around your locallity for an engine reconditioner that offers a cylinder head grinding facility, alluminium alloy cylinder heads and blocks have been surface ground by such shops for decades without any fuss!

The cost 'may' be an issue, but most shops will 'talk' about it for oneoffs and may well be offset by the length of time saved jury rigging a (possibly dangerous) machine allowing you to get on with stuff that actually earns you money instead of taking time up - and potentially a trip to A&E!

They can't do that Carl, under distance selling regulations you are protected by the sale of goods act, and in respect of faulty or damaged goods, the seller is responsible for return costs!
It's their responsibility to claim damages from the courier they employed And to ensure a package is safely delivered to the recipient!

Frankly considering it was their crap packaging that resulted in the damage, they've got a bit of a neck trying to stick you for the postage!

Whilst you have the right to express your opinions on what contributors here may post, you have NO right whatever to denigrate me or my level of intelligence (or anyone else for that matter) in such an offensive manner on this or any other public forum, you DISGUST me!
I made No personal attacks on Anyone, and I certainly see no reason why you should have felt the need to do so!

For your information, I simply copied what a malware programme flagged up And what the website owners themselves posted up on their own website to warn others of possible fraud, now why in God's name should I be berated by anyone for posting up that same information, You may have seen it years ago, but I haven't and I'll wager many others reading here haven't either!

As for the warning banner in Adblock, No I don't take it as the gospel truth, but it is a tool in my armoury and that information Does flag up a warning to me that care needs to be taken when visiting that site, otherwise why did the owners them selves post up their own warning, it may have been there years, but the owners haven't seen the need to remove it either!
Enough people must have complained about it otherwise security companies wouldn't have that url logged in their database, but then you probably say the same about anti-virus programmes too, anyone totally ignoring those warnings is an attack waiting to happen, and they're costing banks and other institutions £$Billions every year!

As for my lack of prowess in computer and internet use, I've been using the web since the early 90's and computers since DOS plus every incarnation of Windows since (except 8), in addition, Linux and latterly MAC OSX up to Lion and Android, plus a few web domains of my own registered, so contrary to your petulant superiority attack on my abilities and understanding, I do have a modicum of nous how to find my way around t'Internet using various media without getting my arse bitten!

You and I may know a few wrinkles, but many on here don't, as as a community we have a certain duty of care to watch each other's backs, not stick a bloody great dagger in them at the slightest provocation when someone tries to do so, otherwise what is the point of being here!
I want to participate with a group of individuals who reciprocate help in whatever fields we may be experienced, not people acting like petulant brats who wish to score points on others to bolster their own sense of importance!

As I used to impress upon my students who lacked self confidence, 'Not one individual we stand next to in life is any better than we are, because they can Always do something in life that we can't, and by that definition can be no better than us!

So Oompa Graham, if you think I'm so inept, it may be wise to reconsider your own standing in life!

It exists as I reported it and has been flagged up by the site owners under the 'Adverts' tab, they're aware of it and plenty of users must have reported it for the site to be flagged up by security programmes!

Suggest some of you take a close look at the security you have running in your browsers, phishing attacks on sites these days make a bogus page dead ringers for the real thing!

Ignore it at your peril, it's your money or identity at risk!

They've also posted up the following warning on the site (accessed via another browser):

Well there are back targeting the members who use this site. We can not give out the details that we are given but by all means you can share them between yourselves.
Unfortunately we cannot do anything about this as there is no restrictions on anyone reading these adverts.
If we made everybody sign in it still wouldn't stop the problem as the scammers, who seem to be genuine would just sign in.

What can be done is for the advertisers to be be more aware.

It seems as if the pattern is repeated.
The seller works away, fishing vessel seems to be a common one.
They always need a bank transfer.

Now a few questions:
Do they supply photographs?
Do they seem knowledgeable ?

One way to sort a scammer out would be to tell them you have a friend in the area who is prepared to collect and pay cash.
Anyone backing away from this would seem very suspect to me.
Don't use payment methods that you cannot reverse (PayPal and that type of site will protect you from this type of scam and they won't use it)
Now when a bank transfer is made and nothing happens has anyone contacted the police in the area the bank is located ? This is fraud after all.

Very easy to do they collate all Fraud with the Metropolitan Police, this was a request from a person at Action Fraud.

Sorry to hear about your loss John, and I'm with you as regards enjoying what you have Now, not at some point that may never arrive, life can throw some very unexpected 'googlies' at you!

3 years ago I had a minor 'op' to remove some bone from my right foot, what was a 15 minute procedure under general anaesthetic became a fraught exercise getting me out of respiratory arrest and well over a year recuperating from the aftermath!
My wife later remarked 'what on earth would I have done with all your stuff', she had a very valid point and have since been whittling away at all the clutter I'll doubtless never use!

My wife in that time has also developed serious health issues and I'm Very aware I could lose her in literally a heartbeat (or lack of), she's also lost a significant degree of sight, so it's making what I'm doing with my stuff even more crucial in case I pop off before she does (I have 'issues' too and I've not reached retirement yet!), And to ensure we spend more time doing what we like doing together instead of in separate parts of the house!

You only appreciate what you have now when you've lost it or come very close!

Good luck with your retirement and hope you enjoy many happy trouble free years of it!

Paul, a pitot system using a light aircraft air speed indicator would be your best bet for those airspeeds!

Ask around local aero clubs to see who maintains their aircraft and talk to the engineers, they'll most likely have a pitot head and ASI kicking around for not a lot that's not up to scratch for certification or repair!
Common Cessna and Piper models generally operate around 90Knots and well within the scope you're looking at!

Chances are for training aircraft on a public cat CofA, they'll all use the engineers at Sturgate airfield near Gainsborough, but more local fields near York may yield glider, microlight or ultralight aircraft bits, although may be more limited on speed range!
Also see if there are any PFA groups too, their aircaft are self maintained on a permit to fly, so a local inspector/owner may point you to some useable spares!

I think Sherburn in Elmet Aero club have their own maintenance facility, may be worth asking there!

Not sure what you could use for the air feed, how about a high revving ducted fan I.C.engine? that ought to shove a bit of a draught out wink

Hmmm, think a wheelchair motor and gearbox might be too big although there may be some compact units around now, last one I fiddled with was around 8 years ago which my late father in law kept buggering up!

In my dim and distant past as an apprentice, I can remember one of the mechanics digging a big hole under his garage, making a cover out of railway sleepers and shoving his compressor in that so it wouldn't disturb his neighbours, think he also rigged up a long pipe for the air intake, which itself will cut noise!
Might be worth considering!

Michael, can't say I've ever heard of a 'designed in' pressure leak off on any compressor, especially over short periods of time, but then I'm no compressor expert!
Mine leaks off over a couple of days, but that's because I've never bothered to check where it's going even though I can hear a small air leak on the pressure reg', I just know if I begin fiddling around with it, Sod's law will dictate something will break and and put it out of action for weeks!
It ain't really broke so I ain't going to fix it ;>))

How about a detachable wheelchair motor? they're powered by small 12V dry cell batteries and come with a gearbox and speed controller?

I can sympathise and probably not what you want to hear, but would recommend you get rid, they're dreadful things, mine always made me cringe when it fired up and ran (seemingly forever) and I mostly only dared run it in the garage with the doors shut!
I doubt you'll ever silence it effectively because you'll need to keep an air flow around it otherwise you risk the motor burning out as well as the intake air getting too hot and reducing pump efficiency!
I recently dumped mine and bought a 15CFM twin cylinder compressor on a similar sized 60 Ltr tank, Very quiet in operation even sitting on the drive, even my missus was well impressed (she cringed too when the old one fired up)!
A larger compressor will also fill the tank quicker and run for shorter periods!
Keep an eye on local auction rooms, I paid ?80 for mine including fees and it's nearly new!
John PS should have added, it's the air intake that makes all the racket which isn't helped by the thin walled alloy cylinder!

PCL couplings are probably the most common and as a make a better quality, cheapo copies are available for half the money but seals are crap and don't last as long!

I buy similar packs then just renew the female adaptors when they wear out!

Frank, I'm guessing the wear 'may' be limited to a step at the end of the shaft bearing the brunt of the 1st / reverse gear cluster, if so it may be worth considering localised repairs by turning down the worn area of the shaft and sleeving it, then have the sleeve surface ground to size, that way you keep much of the original shaft intact and able to use a harder material for the bearing surface without going down the route of hardening the whole thing, it can save a lot of time and expense if needing to faff around drilling and plugging for oilways and boring out the core if it's a hollow tube type shaft!

An alternative to Nitriding if you do go down the remanufacture and hardening route is Tuftriding, which is a process using cyanide salts and probably more readily available (and affordable) as a process than Nitriding!
This is a process I've had done countless times on vulnerable crankshafts to cope with high RPM performance applications from Formula Fords to F5000 V8's and A Series Mini's to Boss Mustangs, the coating is very durable and I've never had a failure even on the infamous Triumph Stag cranks, you just need to take care when polishing the surface after treatment not to go too far and get under the coating which is relatively thin, but as a treatment, it's way more than adequate for your needs!

Check Yellow pages or run a Google search for Tuftride treatments or phone around a few performance engine builders, they'll know of a company that does it, and may even tuck your finished shaft in with another batch for the price of a pint!

When you rebuild the box, I'd highly recommend using a good anti-friction product to coat bearing surfaces during assembly and when refilling it!
Wynns and Slick 50 products are very good as is Molyslip, but that does tend to centrifuge out of the oil after a while, I swear by the stuff, and having recently driven 700 miles across France and the UK to get back home on a virtually destroyed gearbox with next to no oil in it due to something letting go and puncturing the case, I can tell you it does work!

Apologies in advance if I'm teaching Granny to suck eggs, but make sure too that the bronze bushes are in good nick or replaced, because with a damaged shaft the bushes will have wear too!

Thread: Caliper piston tolerance

Almost there Clive, piston seals are generally of a square cross section, and it's the base of the seating groove in the caliper that's angled, this angle tilts the seal in the groove so that the inner edge (facing the inside of the caliper and bearing on the piston) is of a slightly smaller diameter!
It's the tilt on the seal that creates both the seal and 'grip' on the piston and also helps 'return' the piston when the brakes are released so that the pads don't bind, yet keeping the piston in close contact to the pad and preventing it from being sucked back into the caliper by the hydraulic action of the master cylinder piston returning!

Such a miniscule difference in piston size in my view ain't going to cause any grief as long as there's no excessive wear in the caliper bore where it operates, the piston doesn't seal the bore, the seal does, but the clearance shouldn't be enough to cause the seal to be deformed by a sloppy piston fit and leak!
In all my years as a motor engineer, I've never seen any caliper wear to such a degree, but corrosion on cast iron or alloy calipers and pistons are generally their downfall not wear!

As for 'home made', why not? as long as it's well machined and polished and of decent material who is to say it's not an aftermarket product, there are loads of companies making these products as conversions for the classic car market!

Thread: Repairing cracks in cast iron

I used to weld cast iron manifolds with a stick welder and cast rods, but there were always problems with cracks reforming despite pre-heating and stress relieving etc, then I was given a tip by a welder to use Stainless rods instead!

I've since both TIG and arc welded cast with stainless and never looked back, TIG gives a much more neat and clean a result, but pre-heating is necessary to get the job going!

No idea what the experts think of this route, but it always works for me - also repaired broken T slots on an old lathe crosslide and milling table the same way, just a slight difference in colour to the parent metal!

Have you tried logging into your webmail account on your ISP's server to check what's in the spam bin?

If your Email client has been flagging messages up as spam, or your ISP's filters have been flagging them up, they'll go straight into the spam bin on the server and not downloaded, I've had this happen to M.E. notifications on BT!
