Intel 8080 launched in April '74 so that would have been very rapid development programming and testing to hit the '77 launch date. Even the intel 8008 launch in April 1972 would have been tight and risky?.

We installed our own air/air heat pump. We specified the contents of the kit based on room sizes and insulation values (graph supplied ranging from poor to excellent insulation). Part of the purchase included a technician visit to make all gas connections, evacuate the pipes and charge with gas (The units are pre gassed and no extra gas normally required). We installed for a 2 bed house for £3,000 against £10,000 for a complete install ! AND where we live, we often experience -12 deg C sometimes dipping lower. Although not helping the climate, the system is reversible and can be used as air con in summer when the temp last year reached 42 degrees. Our installation price included the cost of laying a small concrete pad, providing the isolated mains supply cable, isolator switch and fuse box etc.

Our friends replaced their gas boiler with an air/water system. No change made to the old radiator system and installation was done in less than a day.

On the BBC doc, it stated that all rads need replacing with larger ones etc, that the old hot water cylinder had to be replaced. I can see why, the cylinder was replaced with a "Heat store" but if the system could produce heat enough for domestic hot water, I don't see the need to increase the size of the rads ??

Hi Robin, we are about 100 miles SE of you. (46320). We know Confolens as we used to pass through on the way to Mansle.

I am into 5" steam loco at the moment (amongst other things). What do you like doing?

Thread: Jig - Drilling for rail track
02/08/2023 18:12:16

This is mainly for beginners who may be faced with a repetitive job and how a simple drill jig can help.

Faced with drilling a few hundred 6 mm holes in some 30 x 6mm steel rail, I made a simple drilling jig. The object was to have a jig mounted on the Mill/Drill and not move the jig, just the rail section. Each end of the rail needed two 6mm holes so that sections could be "fish plated" together. In addition, the same jig would be used to make the fish plates and also used to put holes into the sleeper ends.

Back to the rails.

The first photo shows a rail section in the jig waiting to be drilled. It is pushed up against a removable dowel pin on the right.

jig - drilling 3.jpeg The next shot shows the measurements of where the holes are required

jig - drilling 1.jpeg

This one shows the first hole being drilled 38mm from the end of the rail. The rail is hard up against the dowel pin.

jig - drilling 4.jpeg

The last shot shows the rail moved to the left and a second dowel pin located into the first drilled hole (38mm from the end of the rail) ready for the second hole to be drilled 30 mm from the first hole.

jig - drilling 2.jpeg

All that is left is to turn the rail about (remembering that the holes are offset to the bottom edge of the rail !!).

Now off to weld the sleepers to the rail using another jig to space the sleepers in their correct position and space the rails the correct distance apart. A simple jig made of wood which is sacrificial and may get a few weld burns !

Thread: Evolution TCT blade

The RAGE blades in the chop saw need to cut and not skid over the metal. Best for tube and section. Cutting 1 inch bar is possible but also easy to skid and that will blunt the blade. It will cut reinforcing bar but that reduces blade life. Anyway, must go now and buy another blade

If you stood on top of a step ladder and tried to pee in a bucket at the foot of it, I guess most of us would miss. To be able to control something 12.3 billion miles away that was launched 46 years ago is a magnificent achievement.

My coping saw can swivel 360 degrees but the saw shown here has a limit of only 45degrees.

Thread: Aluminium Bronze

Quick update - EF flux plus 25% of common salt worked a treat to wet the joint surfaces and allow the silver solder to flow properly.

Thanks Nigel

From model engineering pro boards:-

"As the content (of aluminium) increases so does the need to remove the aluminium oxide. A special flux is often recommended. This special flux has a higher content of chloride.

Make your own by adding 25% by weight of kitchen salt (sodium chloride) to your conventional flux! Use it in the same manner."

That is an easy one to try out tomorrow. I will let you know.

Just spent an hour making a complicated composite elbow using some 1/4" dia copper tube and a piece of Al bronze to form a nipple to a 1/4 BSP gland nut.

First one turned out a bit too short, so spent a bit more time and turned up a second nipple.

Went to silver solder the tube into the nipple and THEN I remembered that Al Bronze (If that is what I have) doesn't silver solder (or lead solder).

A few choose words selected !!!

Is it just me or has it been a busy year for spiders. This is just one week's production. I partly blame it on BREXIT as we can't listen to radio 2 (BBC blocking the internet ) and Jimmy Young no longer broadcasting to scare them off.

Thread: Vintage Austin Brake Adjuster - The Denouement
16/07/2023 18:04:57

Perhaps a fat rat in a cage attached to the pedal. When he eats too much from a food hopper suspended over him, the increased weight makes the cage fall and the brakes are applied, after a few days (weeks) of fasting, the rat is lighter and the pedal and cage rises and the rat feeds once again making the pedal go down.

Perhaps not !

I too have a drawer full of hand chasers from about 8 tpi to 42 tpi. (mainly external but some internal). I have a more modern set from Tracy and have used the 26 and 32 extensively, mounted on the topside for screw cutting brass fittings. However I do find it difficult to prevent "dig ins" when holding them by hand for cleaning up a screw cut thread. Incidentally, the Tracy sets are single cutters from Coventry die heads, so pick a few ups next time you see them going cheap at boot sales.

Instead of press fit, could you use shrink or heat expanded fit ? Same limits and finished size, but less stress in fitting the bush (If you are quick enough).

Have you got a silicone product in the mix somehow? That is a devil of a problem to cover if you have.
