Thread: Cycle speedometer

Dooooo ! Stand corrected, Could do better, or See me later - Thanks Duncan, so probably 21 pulses / second not very fast for a bit of electronics (perhaps).

Thread: Cycle speedometer

By my calculation, 15 mph would be about 1.5 revs / second of a 4" wheel. and 15 is quite fast, some tracks are limited to 5mph. I would have thought that that a cyclometer would cope with that (Unless it was relay driven ?).

(1760 x 36) / (4 x 3.142) = revs per hour. Divide that by 360 for revs per second - unless my schoolboy maths have let me down.

Thank you, it seems that John L has answered the question in that a very small diameter / circumference can be entered on some Cyclometers.

Does anyone know if a cycle speedo would indicate correct speed if set to a wheel diameter of 4". I am thinking of using one to indicate locomotive speed for a driving trolley.

If it couldn't be set for such a small wheel, I suppose I could set a false size and multiply the reading by 10 or some such factor.

Thread: How can I cut 0.8mm thick stainless steel sheet more accurately by hand?
02/11/2021 07:52:19

Place your sheet of metal on top of a piece of 50mm thick insulation board. Put your goggles on and use a jig saw with a quality fine metal blade in it. I have cut out intricate weather vanes in stainless using this method.

Sean, if you decide to measure the lead screw pitch mm / Threads Per Inch, be aware that the 3mm pitch metric lead screw is very similar to the 8TPI imperial lead screw (ie 3mm / 3.175mm).

Thread: Rail bending rollers
31/10/2021 08:19:33

Dave, are you saying that you can just push the rail section through the rollers, probably a second person to gently guide the rail as it comes through the rollers ?

Bob

Slip rolls need to be in the horizontal plane as weilding a bit of 25 x 6mm x 4 meters long waving about in the air may cause a few problems. I liked the idea Dave linked to (same problem with guiding in the vertical plane), but that the two guide rollers are powered - even if rolling by hand and not the centre roller.

29/10/2021 09:07:31

Are there any plans available to make a set of rail bending rollers. I am making a garden track from 25 x 6mm steel section, and need to think about making some curved sections.

Thread: Simplex guard irons

Reserection of an old post. There is scant information on the SPEEDY plans as to exact location, but more importantly - What do these guards do ?

Thread: Mill power feed using stepper motor
22/10/2021 17:31:17

Martin, I found that crashing into a microswitch stop at end of travel was a bit severe. By using a microcomputer, you can slow the stepper motor down thereby reducing the shock of a heavy table attempting to come to a dead stop. Then whilst you are about it, add the jog function,

Yes Duncan, a bit like all cars having the emergency towing eye on one side ?

Tongue in cheek - Bob

Thank you gentlemen, I can only imagine that the 5 and 4 inch recommendations came from a club that ran 7 1/4 and 5 inch on the same track line.

Bob

21/10/2021 10:54:31

What standard do we use for coupling heights for a 5" gauge locomotive ?

I see that one standard states 5" above the rail head for ground level track and 4" for raised track (Why the difference ?)

Another standard says 3 1/4" above rail head.

Some standards state 6mm diameter pin, others 4mm.

If I use the 5" standard, the coupling would be above the buffer beam on a SPEEDY Loco 5" gauge.

I am well confused.

Thread: Austin 7 in France

Just a bump as my friend is organising an alternative centenary of the Austin 7 here in SW France and we are looking for Austin 7 owners down this way.

Anyone out there ?? PM me if you prefer.
