Surprised that they are BSF, normal would be BSW on cast iron.

Chris, you don't say what sort of mill - can you tilt the head ?

Use a tilting table ?

Thread: Power Cut Proofing
07/10/2022 19:58:23

Just to add a bit of security on top of a UPS, there are apps for smart phones (Quite old ones) that monitor the charger input. They can send an SMS to another phone to indicate power on and power off. I use one for our freezer when on holiday. If the power goes off for a long time, I ring my neighbour.

As Dave Halford said, also works on MAC computers.

Thread: Central Heating Room Thermostat
05/10/2022 17:37:05

All the ones I have been exposed to (friends think that computer programmers can program time clocks etc). The problem is "life style". Do we always come in, go out in the same pattern, weekdays, weekends, holidays etc. Did it feel cold today, did we have guests that wanted more hot water than usual.

Its a minefield to program. Thank goodness we have a log stove, chuck another log on if its cold!

Thread: Number drills?

Most of us have a rusty gauge still un-used on the shelf.

Thread: Expanding mandrels.
05/10/2022 06:38:57

My experience of expanding mandrels - they break quite easily ! To minimise this, gently warm them up before use as some workshops can be quite cold overnight and it really spoils your day to bust a sleeve !

Thread: Gear seems to be missing
01/10/2022 17:36:36

Many lathe change wheels / headstock gears had broken teeth in the past - Typically back gear teeth were sheared off when used to lock the spindle to remove the chucks. Many repairs were made by drilling and tapping into the gap where the tooth had broken off - Perhaps 3 or 4 x 2BA holes, studding with Loctite screwed into the hole, and when 'set' the studs filed to the shape of the tooth profile. I have seen copper / brass teeth which are better than no tooth.

Leaving yours like that will put extra stress on the adjacent tooth causing an expensive failure for the future.

Professional services can weld up the gap and re-machine the tooth, but that is expensive for the home machinist.

Larry, I thought you had to S.O.R.N (statutory off road notification) any licenced vehicle if you took it "off of the road". Another way is to Export the vehicle.

Thread: UK State Pension
27/09/2022 06:37:49

Born in 1946, I retired early to build a house. To get my full number of years, I paid my contributions for the last few years to get the full 36 years of contributions. Then the rule changed to only requiring 32 years (After I had paid for 35 tears). No re-fund of contributions and no letter to say stop paying contributions.

By comparison, my wife was short of years although to be fair she was credited with certain years when she had ill health. We could not transfer my excess payments (Like income tax credits) and the payments to make hers a full pension did not seem cost effective.

Two of my private pensions have collapsed. There were warning letters before the collapse saying that they were fully insured. When the collapse came, their values were frozen and that no further increases would be paid.

RANT over !

Thread: Silver solder wire / rod size
23/09/2022 06:40:07

Think of silver solder as a commodity in the workshop. It will be used for more things than your crankshaft once you have some. If you have not used silver solder before, PRACTICE on some similar joints that you can chuck away afterwards.

1) You need PLENTY of heat. Most problems arise from the joint not coming up to temperature quickly enough.

2) For a crankshaft joint, I would use the HT5 flux as it has an extended life at the brazing temperature.

3) Decide what temperature silver solder you need, I would select the lower temperature one as it will need less heat. I would choose the 630 - 650 deg C type 455.

Search this site for tips on silver soldering on this site, have a look on the net eg CupAlloys

Good luck and PRACTICE before you ruin your hard work.

Thanks Jason, all these years, and I had never used that "search" feature, only the "Search this site" on the GREEN bar! What is the difference between the two searches except that one seems to provide fewer results.

Journeyman - You have hit one of the nails on the head, if you search for the word Forum, that old thread can't be found.

Following on from "Donations to the Website", may I suggest we start a new list of what we would like to see on a new ME/MEW Forum.

We often talk about the shortcomings of the present site and we have been asked by Neil to make these known.

To kick it off:-

A more robust search engine

Ability to rotate photos

Ability to load photos without adding to an album using cut and paste , direct load from your computer or mobile etc.

Loading of other file types, PDF,GIF, Excel, Word etc

Thread: French model Engineers
09/09/2022 15:19:30

Just a line or two. My 5" gauge SPEEDY is all but finished. Its passed its stage 1 boiler certification and now must pass the second stage. I am now a member of my "local" club "Le petite train de Grenard" (only 2 hour drive away) - but they run 71/4 inch track !! However I have found an extensive 5" private track where we can have meet ups and arrange for boiler testing. A super bunch of friendly vapourists.

We live in the Lot region dept 46 SW France and model steam locos are like chicken's teeth which is strange as in our nearest town, there are 2 large aircraft component factories - plenty of engineers there !

Roister (BR Roland) You are way down south of me - our nearest town is Figeac 46100. Contact me if you have SPEEDY questions or just want a chat

Thread: Moving house (and workshop)
07/09/2022 15:56:58

We made the move from Peterborough to SW France. I only took Imperial diameter free cutting steel for my Austin 7 and brass/ bronze. All sheet material, rod ends etc I gave to the local steam club. 2 x 1/2 ton trailer loads !!!

Worn out and broken tools were discarded.

I then took Boxford lathe and accessoirise , Warcoo Economy mill and all attachments, taps dies etc, welders, home made saw bench( circa 1964 - no health and safety certificate awarded), planer thicknesser.

I also took all nuts bolts and washers. BSF,BSW,UNF,UNC,Metric and BA. hardly used the UNF/C but may do if I bought an old 'mini' - dream on Bob!

Junked all plumbing stuff as metric land is different.

Took all other tools mechanical, electrical etc.

I down sized from a double garage and workshop 5m x 3.5m and didn't really miss any material I gave away.

The move was 2 days loading up onto a 3/4 ton trailer, 3 days in transit - and I still can't find some of the tools I thought I packed up !

Piece of cake really. Be ruthless - chuck it away if you havn't used it since the last move!
