Is a M&W 2000 digital micrometer a better bet than a new far eastern digital mic?

Thread: Colchester student help please |
02/04/2013 21:19:52 |
I have a mk1 student too and it's the only machine in my shop that I haven't got an inverter or variable speed drive on I have a 2hp single phase on it and its nice to be able to stop it dead on the handle with the brake. almost all my other machines (8) run on control techniques drives they are easy to set up and so far I haven't had a failure. They are not the cheapest around about £250 ish for a 1.5 kw one

Thread: pillar drill column |
17/01/2013 11:01:30 |
Thanks for all your replies I would not consider using scaffold tube far too flimsy and rough surface finish to take the table and be able to move it I was only wanting an increase in length of about 6-12 inches over what i have available now Lathejack if you do find an old ram I look forward to hearing from you

I bought the machine and someone had modified it to a large throat by chopping the column and extending the head out by 24" or so Ive welded it back together but would really like a longer column a s the startrite has a tall base casting and the head has a 2 speed epicyclic gearbox on it as well so room under the chuck is limited
I'll have to trawl the scrap yards round sheffield for a length...the reason or my post was what sort of steel finish do I need to allow the table to move and clamp well......is bright drawn solid OK or is seamless tube OK or does every type need to be ground to 2 3/4 " |
16/01/2013 13:21:06 |
Thanks for that they only want £30 for solid steel (per 12" would bright drawn be ok? what would the tolerance be on diameter? any body got any idea where to get some cheaper ( scrap) from? |
16/01/2013 12:03:01 |
I need a new length of steel for my startrite pillar drill column 1.5 metres long would be fine it needs to be 2 3/4 " diameter any suggestions on where to source such material and will it need grinding to size or will bright drawn be ok wall thickness is 4mm or thereabouts

Thread: Zeroing a mechanical digital micrometer |
15/10/2012 10:44:27 |
Gordon may be refering to the other type of digital micrometer ??? http://i417.photobucket.com/albums/pp251/ianpark1/DSC01150Medium.jpg
I should imagine that there would be a method of removing the counter mechanism and reseting the gear chain

Thread: where to get screwdriver handle material |
19/07/2012 17:29:06 |
Whilst at school we used to make a screwdriver as a project we warmed up the screwdriver spindle and forced it into a predrilled hole in a plastic material that was translucent yellow and sometimes it was fluted we had turned a nice dome on the end and a finger stop groove near the blade and polished it to a high polish Where could I get some of this material from was it cellulose acetate butyrate? CAB seem to remember GPO screwdrivers were made of this too

Thread: How to cut tungsten carbide? |
16/07/2012 14:55:23 |
Yes perhaps they are lesser grade of steel the steel i can cope with but will the tungsten snap where I want it to? its perhaps 10mm x 1.5 in size on a backing of steel 25mm x 3.5 mm the planer blades want to end up at 310mm long from their existing 400 mm long. I'm presuming a thin cutting disc wont touch the carbide? |
16/07/2012 08:00:51 |
I'm considering buying some tungten carbide tipped planer blades that are too long for my planer...is there any easy way to trim these down? they are HSS with tips on 1"x 1/8" x 16" long
thinking my tile saw? diamond blade water cooled? |
Thread: How much pressure is an arbour press capable of |
12/06/2012 09:10:02 |
Many thanks for all your replies as I said I have a small press which is claimed to be a 1 tonne press its small weighs perhaps 6 kg and has a bar perhaps 20cm long ebays full of them I have a very large one perhaps 75kg weight with a 50cm bar I never used it as I have a large hydraulic one which i use more so I put it up for sale on ebay ( sub sold) It was just a query from a prospective buyer as to what "tonnage" it was ...which made me think what indeed it was.as I can't imagine that the little one I have will ever provide a force of a tonne...looking at ebay ads for new chinese presses one like my big one suggests 5 tonnes for a press of this size So how do manufacturers measure their tonnage? |
10/06/2012 09:21:28 |
I,m selling a large arbour press and someone has asked "what tonnage is it " so how do I calculate the pressure ? I have small one bought from Axminster almost pocket sized and they claim it's a 1 tonne size...what does that mean? My big press the gear is 25 mm radius and bar is 500 long does that mean a 20 fold increase in force applied at the handle ?making say only 2000 kg if you could apply 100 kg force? so how do the little presses claim 1 tonne |
Thread: can anyone find online supplier of this bearing |
22/05/2012 08:09:37 |
Thanks for all your replies I know that a 63000 is close but I was more intrigued as to why startrite had used such an unusual bearing also these seem to be very expensive £6 for a budget and £12 for a brand name Ian |
21/05/2012 19:51:11 |
I have a startrite bandsaw most bearings are imperial sizes however the blade guide bearings are as follows marked nachi 10bcs 1nsl id 10mm (measured on the shaft it fits on) od 26.1mm ( measured on bearing) width 11.5 mm
any ideas as to a supplier? Ian |

Many years ago my father had a pair of pliers that had 3 jaws perhaps 50mm long which were bent at 90 degrees leaving 20mm bent. When you squeezed the handles the jaws moved outwards evenly spaced at 120 degrees. they were for stretching rubber sleeving over wires. I'm looking for some now and dont seem to be able to find any. A name might help? Ian |
