Thread: Coventry die head
15/04/2015 13:59:22

Well I bought a 1/2 " one off ebay yesterday afternoon it came today and it easily mounted into my toolpost in a boring bar holder which was 1" dia hole the die head was 1" too so no problems there.

Moved it to centre position by eye

A piece of 3/8ths in the lathe speed at 200 rpm lube and advanced the saddle at a speed to suit the advance and then stopped when I thought enough and the die head snapped open ....result a lovely thread 3/8 UNC

why had I not bought one of these years ago..now just to aquire lots more dies

Thanks for that I guess I'll look out for a 1/2" one then

I want to buy a coventry die head for use when I have a lot of threading to do

whats a good size to buy?

What do the sizes mean 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, 1",

Is this the maximum size it will do as i'm sure i've seen 1 1/4" dies for use in a 1" holder

I cant imagine I will want to cut bigger than 14mm or so mainly 6 and 8 mm

Thread: Automate the Shutter button
04/04/2015 21:44:23

I would buy a cable release which has the correct thread form already then fit your solonoid on the end of that and decouples any vibration from your camera when the solonoid actuates

The thread is a tapered one ( i assume you knew that )

Les

I was trying to keep it simple for david

explaining the difference between torque and power would be overkill for the application he was wanting the motor for

Ian

David

How much power do you need

Remember that gearing down your motor from 1400 to 40 rpm increase power by 35 x

I have just bought some nice 3 phase British made motors only .4 kW so 1/2 hp or so for £15 each

And suitable inverters for £30 each.......use pulleys to gear down to a nominal 40 rpm and then use the variable speed to fine tune...using the inverter really to give you a 3 phase supply.

You will easily find a package like I have described for under 50 £

Thread: Any inverter setters?
03/04/2015 16:55:03

Yes i usually fit switches and pots but in this application its got a nice key[pad that will do the job so it would be nice not to have to fit external controls

Its set so it starts at the last speed

Its just adjusting if ness is a bit hit and miss with the slow acting up and down buttons

there must be a parameter that does what i want

03/04/2015 14:48:04

I have usually been able to set the parameters on most VFD's i've come across but just got some IMO Jaguar VXSM drives

I want to use them with the built inkeypad control as most of the time its just to start them and leave at the same speed as before

My problem is when using the up/down buttons the frequency changes in 0.01 htz increments so very slowly if you hold the button down it eventually speeds up but by then you let go because its moving so fast and then have to repeat the process

Is there a parameter to allow the up/down buttons to change frequency in whole units rather than 0.01 units?

Thread: Glass Cutting?
20/03/2015 07:27:57

I use a diamond blade circular saw for cutting all sorts of glass ceramic stone parts

Very cheap from b&q as a tile cutter

stick a paper sticker on the glass mark out and then trim away then use the side of the blade to gently sand away

Thread: Which Loctite
01/03/2015 13:47:35

Loctite 303 is great

I was advised to use this by a salesman to repair some stainless steel water trays that held a mild acid solution ..they had sprung open on a joint.

It was expensive but a little goes a long way

its a tube of glue like uhu consistency and a spray activator

Before i started I tried it on some stainless sheet scrap

2 pieces 3 x 3 " and glued them overlaping about 1/2" they did not want to come apart when cured

even with one side in a vice the material bent rather than the joint failed...it took serious effort to break the joint with a chisel down the joint

Thread: colcehster bantam 1600 mk2
20/02/2015 11:10:28

If you turn the chuck by hand the shaft should turn ( the part with the thread on) when the lever at the front is set to forwards or reverse there is a neutral position in between

If the shaft turns but the spline doesnt the the shear pin is broken

If the shaft doesnt turn then its inside the gearbox or the selecter mechanism thats failing to engage

But the splined sleeve should pull off but no need to unless the shaft is turning but the sleeve isnt

Anyone any ideas about my bed? is it hard or not?

13/01/2015 09:39:33

John

What happens to the square head apron? is that the same as a mk1.5 round head apron?

And my student which I assumed was in original paintwork doesnt have an induction hardened beds sticker on it

But a file glides off the bed ... doesnt cut at all .. should I be able to if its been hardened? if as you say its only like soft steel anyway

And just another thing my student doesnt have a serial number on the bed does that mean its been reground? would that remove the serial number which wasn't on a bed way anyway (it between the ways)
