Thread: Issue 4444

“There is more to model engineering than locomotives.”

I must agree with the above statement, looking back at Model Engineer the diversity of models and their construction is what made the magazine.

We now seem to have reached a stage where it is assumed that locomotive/steam engines/traction engines are the “de rigueur” of the Model Engineer.

I was amazed to read from the editor, edition 4459, that she thinks large scale road running machines that require heavy machinery should be included in the future!

While further on in the magazine we have images from the Harrogate Exhibition that show’s that there is still a vast sweep of models that don’t run on steam being constructed.

The magazine should be rebranded prehaps ‘old glory model steam’.

Instead of the relentless obsession with steam can we go back to model engineering and all it encompasses.

I like the scratching of the head and the smile when he tips the bucket, you'd get jailed here for life if you let your kid any where near a machine like that let alone start it. Good on the wee fella hope he has a long and successful life.

We had a foreman painter that delighted in giving people a squirt from a CO2 extingusher, funny when it was someone else but not so funny when you were working at bottom of the yachts hawser pipe 25ft in the air sitting on a plank.face 7

The condensation from one of these 'little devil' propane heaters is a real problem, one of the workshops I used to inhabit had one and even the wooden doors ran with moisture on cold damp mornings when it was running, a change to a small wood burning stove eliminated the problem and made the workshop warmer and saved money. A small dimplex 800w storage heater works quite well.

I have used MEK for a number of years to fix ABS plastic, in some cases the component has failed again but not along the line glued. MEK like many solvents should be used in well ventilated workshops, it was used as a degreaser in some garages and is readily available.

google maps says it's 383 miles from preston to loch carron hotel, you'd need a pint and a bed after that drive.

Did you remove the chain guard on your chain saw as sawing chains without it you'll have links flying every where, then you spend ages hunting for the missing links. My advice wood be to take it back to the chain store, get your money back head for the pubsmile p

If ABS it can be successfully 'glued' with MEK (Methyl ethyl ketone), shavings dissolved in it can be used to build up areas, but it does dissolve ABS.

the printing press, without it information about most things wouldn't have been made so widely available.

My favourite is the sewing machine just about one of the most useful pieces of machinery every invented, why? cos it keeps the wife happy for hours on end.

Thanks all for this info,

This was a very easy fix for my early S7, the wear was on the front face of the short guide, once the strip was fitted and glued in place and the saddle adjusted I am now able to traverse the length of the bed with only a slight tightening at the two ends not bad for a lathe that is 50 years old.

Thread: Self adulation
17/10/2012 23:58:28

It was the length of the article that astounded me more than anything, I can only surmise that the editor is running out of short articles and used this as a page filler.

Prehaps some detective work by the editor and his staff on some of the engines that have featured in past editions of ME telling how they have survived the ravages of time and and the problems encountered during their long lives would be a good start for some short articles.

16/10/2012 22:10:50

What ever pocessed the inclusion of 6 pages of adulation "A machine shop for the next generation"

This could well be the ultimate article to put anyone, young or old off becoming a model engineer.

How many youngsters parents go out and buy a forge so that their son can pass his A level? Then he wants to build a traction engine so the six former has to 'fund' it himself, of course with a lot of input from daddy who remember was not doing any 'projects for 2012. A mill and chuck in a lathe and some high power electrics and hope that he can get his creation out of the workshop, really.

A real shame that editor actually even considered this article for publication.

I remember walking or cycling with my brother and sister from West Drayton to South Kennsington in the early 60's most weekends during our summer holidays glorious days spent in the museums, my favorite was the science museum followed by the geology, there used to be so much to see and do you could have spent your life there.
