That would seem to infer that students and apprentices no longer have such a requirement. (or they no longer exist)

With regard to Ian's post regarding his "crusty old mentors", not all of us have been so fortunate to have such a knowledge base, and have to make it up as we go along.

It's such a shame that they do not manufacture an easy-to-read rule as they used to. Personally, I find the 1/2mm markings quite a distraction too.

First mill was a Warco VMC. After that experience, I said I would never have anything from Warco again..

Next was an old Bridgport which kept me out of trouble for a bit.

After a chat with John Stevenson at one of the shows, and relating my VMC story to him, he advised a WM40.

I'm pleased I took his advice and I'm very happy with the second WM40 machine they delivered. (It's only needed a few mods).

From my experience with the citric acid, keep your eye on it when you have dunked the bits and pieces. The rust disappears, the metal takes on a nice silvery sheen, but if left too long the metal can get discoloured. It is quite a long temperature-dependent process though.

Citric acid crystals dissolved in warm water, work very well, and give good results...cheaply.

As others have said - It all depends on where you live. In our last house, a new 240v supply was required before completing the driveway. This was modified to a 3 phase supply for very little extra.

However when we moved to rural Norfolk with it's existing 63A single phase supply, the quote was £65,000 for 3 phase. This was out of the question, but they did condescend to up the fuse to 100A, when re-routing the 240v.

A rotary converter was circa £1000. This runs the mill alright, but I find the noise excessive, even when moved next door to the workshop.

Not quite how Google operates, but if the Alibre web address was entered into the search box, the MEW link would never show, although the proper Alibre site could be accessed.

However if the same address was typed directly into the web search box (top left hand corner in I.E.9) I was taken straight to the correct link.

According to my interpretation of the blurb, you can install on several computers, but have to use the key with the computer you want to actually utilise. Not really a problem, as you cannot be in two places at once.

In an attempt to try and find things when I need them, my "system" is to have various heights of 600x400 plastic trays positioned in modules with the locations shown in a database on the PC.

A requirement for a mobile module had arisen and it was completed today.

I made the Hemmingway kit some years ago. If my memory is correct, the actual wheels are a bit of an oddball size and the choice of knurl is limited from Hemmingway. However choices were available from Cromwell Tools.

Those are what are called Idle bar plugs. The idea being that the hot element is screened from the incoming fuel charge by the bar, as in a 4 stroke engine there are only half as many requirements for Glow as the two stroke.

Interesting observations. I'm entirely with you on the former, but have to disagree with the latter....sometimes. We were always taught to park with the vehicle facing 'outwards'. So in cases of urgency, a safe and quick exit was possible. I could just imagine the pandemonium if, for example, fire engines had to reverse out.

But...on a visit to B&Q frinstance, it makes sense to have the boot of the vehicle easily accessible by parking nose-in.

My Mitutoyo is the 293-605 version which reads to 0.001mm. When replacing the battery, the Zero/ABS and the Preset buttons have to be 'played with' to ensure readings are correct. Press and hold the Zero/ABS until the screen shows all zeros, then the Preset button. The time interval to press-for varies with what you are trying to achieve.

The mechanical correction is carried out first, as others have described, with a small C spanner, then the screen display altered to match.
