Thread: A Gentle Question About Clockwork?
03/11/2022 14:26:07

Clocks that strike or chime should really only be wound forwards. Also alarm clocks. Watches with days dates etc are better wound forwards. Pure timepieces can be wound back. I just stop mine for one hour.

Does anyone still use sundials? cheeky

Depends on the clock. A carriage clock will need watch oils on the platform. A French clock possibly likewise. Long case will need something heavier. Suppliers like Cousins, Walsh, Meadow & Passmore or A G Thomas

Looking at the second photo of the parting tool, it doesn't look like the left hand corner is sharp. It could be a fault of the photo of course.

It's for opening the square hole in pocket watch minute hands. There are similar round ones as well. Inalways thought it's a pity they don't make three square ones.

Thread: The cheek of McDonalds
19/10/2022 13:44:12

Howi suggests that I should get out more. At 88 and having suffered from heart failure at new year, I only wish I could but it wouldn't be to a McDonalds. As regards to fish and chips, I only eat them inside a chipshop with seating inside, served on crockery. I have never grazed on the street. smiley

I've never been in a McDonalds, Burger King, Wimpys or any other fast food shop

All due respects Dr. but a museum is not a working environment.

Every engine house that I have been into has had tiled walls and floor. The place is flooded with condensate on startup and oil thereafter.

Flash Bleach. Vinegar & bicarb. Cider Vinegar. All good. Cider vinegar good for self adhesive labels too.

Also hot water and Ammonia if you can stand the smell.

Seeing that it's an alloy of copper, anything can be added to it, not necessarily other metals.

Thread: Ideas on how to form the joggle plate for a small tool makers clamp

You don't really need one, the clamp will work without it.
