Thread: Traditional Fluorescent Starter : How do they fail ?
26/12/2018 09:20:31

Slight digression from the OP.

The link from Robert on the safety of LED tubes is dated 2011. Since then they have become more popular and there are plenty on the market that are safe. If you go for those imported illegally with no CE mark then you may have a problem, not that a CE mark is a failsafe guarantee on quality.

Also the safety aspect is about replacing them. Using basic common sense when doing this would help to eliminate the risk of an electrical shock.

I have Bisley multi draw units and others with metal bases. I cured the rust problem by using the insulating foam that is used to put under flooring. It's about 4mm thick and its available in packs from B&Q, it also reduces noise and can be easily shaped to protected cutting edges . I also have one metal cupboard unit ( roneo vickers) which is in covered outdoor location. Rust, is kept at bay by installing a low wattage tube heater at the bottom which is control by a thermostat.

Sebastian, you may have more luck getting suitable belt from a supplier like Henderson bearings in Ringwood. There must be a similar outfit near you in Exeter. They tend to have a wider knowledge than motor factors.

Thread: 3 -Phase Conversion of a Mini-Lathe
21/12/2018 07:35:23

When I fitted the VFD to my S7 I first tested the setup on the bench. The EMI was very obvious causing some electronic gadgets in the workshop to fail. I fitted the Schurter filter as identified by Robert and fitted the whole assembly in a shield diecast box. There are now no obvious EMI problems. Just received my SDR kit from BG , will try SODs tests when I have got it going .

Out of interest in the latest EPE there is a 2 part article on making a speed controller for single and three phase motors.

Thread: Sourcing
11/12/2018 22:58:02

Hi Brian,

+1 for Jon and Nick's suggestions. I have purchased from Noggin End metals and others that advertise in MEW and have had never had a bad product. I use a small company in Ringwood who advertise on e-bay and pickup to save postage. As you don't give a location in your profile it's hard to advise you of one local to you.

Thread: Aircraft General Discussion
08/12/2018 00:29:59

In the early part of my career I worked for Daval in Perivale , Middx. They made wire recorders for aircraft . One was featured on Tomorrow's World and nick named the Red Egg, it was used on Concorde. An early version had 2 spools and the wire was transferred between the two, that auto reversed. It had a very neat double helix wire guide to ensure the wire was laid out on the receiving spool in an orderly manner , this also that reversed at the end of each travel without snatching. It was nightmare reading the data back when the wire broke. It was also getting difficult to source the special wire in the late 70s.

Later on worked on recorders used to record maintainence and trials data on Torpedoes, PIGs (pipeline inspection gear) and the F18 for the US Navy aircraft . The real challenge was to compress the data enough to fit on these recorders as they had limited storage capabilities. The crash recorders were nicknamed the "on sh@t recorder" as it was normally the last words that were recorded in the event of an accident. I visited AAIB and US equivalent a number of times, it used to send shivers down my spine when i saw the wreckage reassembled.

Thread: Resiliant or standard metric foot mounted motor?
03/12/2018 19:02:13

Just add batteries !!!!!

03/12/2018 18:36:30

Hi Derek

Converted my S7 last year using the Transwave package with metric motor, non resilient mount. As Phil said, wish I had done it years ago. It's very quiet, which means I can use the Lathe late a night without waking the wife up. I only had to make three changes.

1) New pulley to fit metric shaft. I do not know if you can modify the existing pulley. I did not, as I did not have facilities to bore it out to size. RDG sell one with the correct bore size.

2) I had to modify the Myford mounting plate by slotting the holes by a few mm. I used M8 coach bolts.

3) Turned the motor connection box around by 180deg so the cables exited facing down. Also fitted the cable to the temp sensor if required in future, the lathe is in a awkward position to do this in situ. You may not need to do this it depends on the Lathes location.

Other than that it was plain sailing. It's a good idea to set it up on a bench first to check it all works (make sure the motor is fixed down first). I would suggest before you start you make a support structure to hold the motor mounting assembly when fitting.

If you pm me I can sent some photos .

Nathan, got your message. Will be contact when I get home tomorrow.

If you are a golfer then get the 1 iron out a wave it around during the storm, even God can't hit a 1 iron.

Used to watch great thunderstorms in your area when staying on my uncles farm on Anglesey. Could stay up all night watching the lighting.

As previous response have said the existing protection on telephones lines is basic and will not help when you have a strike close by. The standard master socket from BT uses a spark gap device, this is defined as the primary protection element. The let through energy will still be high, you could make up some secondary line protection using MOVs and TVS diodes. If you search the web I am sure you will find some ideas what is needed. It is important that you have good grounding/earthing to make any protection elements fully effective.

By chance i have just found 2 protection sub assemblies from RS whilst clearing out some junk, if you pm me with your address I will post them to you, assuming you are in the UK.

Nathan,

I would go for a 64 bit system. However make sure your existing progs /apps will run on it. Have you got the installations discs for your MS progs? If not you could have some problems.

Thread: Mk1 Super 7 - What colours ?
29/11/2018 23:29:46

Dave, I have exactly the same model. In the family since new . Grey and cream, not custard yellow. When I cleaned mine up I used plain white instead of the cream. Its a lot easier to find parts that fall into the bed with light colour. Whilst you have it apart paint the toothed gear on the spindle and mark off the teeth to help with gear cutting etc in the future. I think this was a GT idea.

Can't help with ML 7 but converted S7 which required new banjo , leadscrew , change wheels and cover.

The instructions from Myford help. Nick I have no problems cutting both metric an imperial threads with the QCGB, only needed to purchase a few extra changewheels as per Brian Woods book.
