Can you help, Boxford Union Drill

HI Folks,

I urgently need some kind of parts diagram or similar to help with the overhaul of a recently acquired a Boxford Union pilar drill.

Its the model with the back gear fitted.

I need to strip out the spindle and associated parts to clean out the dried grease and replace a bearing or 2.

UPDATE:

I was never able to find a manual or drawings for this pillar drill.

I have now completed the restoration of this tool.

I have made a photo album of the stripped down assemblies, this may help others who need to atempt the same job

Thanks for posting the update. I have a PD8 with a problem it is stuck in back gear and the high speeds wont engage.

The most common cause would be the small offset pin on the back of the selector has sheared off. see here

or the gear that slides up and down on a plain steel shaft has seized on probably due to dried out grease (mine was a little bit stiff too). see here:

you can access this gear via the inspection plate on the top of the casting 9 or with the quill removed, through the electrics cavity but you will need to remove the splash plate inside.

to get the gear out, you need to remove the shaft it runs on!! ( Hmm if its seized that could be fun) to remove the shaft, first remove the grub screw in the top of the shaft, then the ball bearing falls inside, allowing removal. the shaft runs in the small bronze bush between the main spindle bearing hole and the square inspection hole. see here:

sorry to resurrect an old post, but I have a similar problem to FreddyBear's in that I am currently refurbishing my Boxford drill and am struggling to find information. The photos mentioned above are helpful, by I cannot figure out from them how to disassemble the quill pinion mechanism.

I suspect that the small handle attached to the depth gauge on the left side need to be removed but I would like to understand how it goes together before applying too much force to the wrong bit and damaging it.

Just wanted to add some information for the benefit of anyone facing the same problem in the future.

I contacted Boxford and they sent me the current instruction manual for the PD4 & PD8 drills. I will try to work out how to post a copy here, but basically it turns out that the short lever on the left clamps the circular dial to the quill pinion and can be used as a depth stop. My problem was that I couldn't move it, I never realised it worked as a depth stop. However after abusing it with various tools and a rubber mallet to try and release it to no avail, it dawned on me that it clamps on a left hand thread.

So, I publicly admit my stupidity for the benefit of anyone else who wants to dismantle one! Turn it in the other direction!

Hi FreddyBear and Colin, thanks for this thread, really useful as i have a Boxford Union PD4 and need to take out the spindle and quill assembly in order to change the bearings. ive set it up with an inverter, and it works really well. Amazing speed control and so much torque at the low speeds. It's a really nice drill press.

i'm a bit unsure how to drop the quill. I assume that i take off the depth stop on the left and the spring assembly on the right hand side. Can anyone help with how to take off the spring assembly, and any tips on dealing with the spring under tension? I assume the pinion assembly comes out to the left - you just tap it across?? And then the quill and spindle just drop down?

Any tips really welcome. Like you both, i have looked everywhere for a parts diagram or assembly instructions and havent found anything so far.

Also - anyone have suggestions for a good bearing supplier?

Andrew, without a profile its difficult to advise you on a local supplier. I personally use Henderson bearings in Ringwood, Hants.
