I would have thought that thread rolling is the way to go, much stronger and no swarf to clear when doing long lengths. finding material of the right dia might be harder as you need material smaller than 1.4mm. As far as the material twisting I would have thought that the torque to do the thread rolling is relative to the size after all you will not be the first person to make some. |

its easy enough to silver solder cast iron, just heat to red and wire brush to remove carbon/graphite and carry on as normal. |

Yes Trevor there are two compound slides my mk1 started with one the same as yours but I managed to do a swop with one. from a imperial student, swopping out the feed screws etc. I did this for the same reason as you and have never looked back. |

The Masonmaster Despeeder is a good tool to convert for tapping in the lathe or mill (Past article in mag) as it just idles round at spindle speed until gripped by the operator. I have one which I have converted and have made several interchangeable tap drivers that fit onto it. Mostly used for taps under 8mm. And of course works in reverse. |

My filing machine uses needle files and cuts on the up stroke and has never been a problem, after all how much metal do you think you are going to take off each stroke??? |

Out of interest I use what is known as Dutch tallow for machining stainless and gives a nice finish. It was originally used at work for lead wiping.

Peter, Out of interest I Have made a nut threaded with the spindle thread on my sherline mill so with the No1 MT er16 collet chuck fitted and drawerbar tightened the nut on the spindle thread can be spun down to contact the collet chuck making it more rigid in the same way Clarkson did for their No2 MT collet chucks as they felt that the taper a bit flimsy for hard work. |
