With regards to the scissor jack BEWARE , a friend bought one and when jacking up it promptly let the b ike down (no damage!!!) but the screw and nut failed because they were such a bad fit.It was cheap and now he knows why.I bought a metre of lead screw and a nut and even fitted a thrust bearing and it now works a treat. Screw and nut came from Moore International.

When you say sintered brass I presume you mean bronze, and using sintered material extends the maintainence period. You could also buy a sintered blank and machine your own.

Thread: Case Hardening
22/12/2022 11:30:52

Yes Martin you are quite right about box hardening, I use a it fir small-gears and other instrument parts. Not only do they come out a beautiful shade of grey but as some parts have thin star shaped teeth there is no chance of overheating as they are protected by the canister. Out of interest I put a brown paper tube in the canister to use up the oxygen which results in the nice clean finish

Thread: Workshop warming

Thread: Adhesive query: Steel to rubber to glass
16/12/2022 22:35:51

When we used to fix these in the 60s and 70s no glue was used the rubber was stretched and because of this it made it thinner allowing the winder rail to be pushed over the rubber onto the glass and when the rubber was released it made the whole thing tighter. Wouldn't mind a pound for every one done!!!!

Thread: Yet another knurling question.
12/12/2022 12:55:28

Recently had to do some long straight knurls but could not keep the lines straight so ended up cutting them on the shaper with a 5c indexer. Now they are straight. this is on 16mm 316637531fc-1f31-4598-b0cd-b2548b449c12.jpeg

Thread: Let's talk about Drill bits, specifically twist drills.
12/12/2022 12:12:02

I agree that the lip length is THE most important thing for accurate sized holes, I use 4 facet sharpening with a secondary point angle on sizes above 6mm as it is believed to keep the hole straighter and give a better finish and just stone the front for brass.

Thread: Mill table oil grooves.
11/12/2022 20:18:07

I do some grooving in a motorcycle kit that I do and the grooves are only 0.012 in deep and the lube pours through. I think you will be surprised how little metal you need to remove.

Thread: Heminway Kit
01/12/2022 22:32:49

Stevie, I read an article in the last couple of years or so by a guy whose work is almost exclusively using steadies and he was not a fan of using bearings as he thought they were not friendly to the material and also affected the surface finish as a result.

Thread: What Did you do Today 2022
27/11/2022 10:29:31

The post war bed frames were made from a specific high tensile angle so they could use less material when we were very short of that commodity.
