Can anyone help please I have a Mk 2 Dore Westbury vertical milling machine. It wont drive the cutting head properly. OK on the fastest speed but just slips on the middle/lower setting. Assume the problem is with the speed reduction gearing but cannot work out exactly what the problem is. Many thanks in advance

Chris

As its an epicyclic set up is it possible that one of the three elements is managing to slip under load?

Is the problem on direct hogh speed drive or in the slow range?

There are two pegs which fit the large ali drum. In normal mode. They are fitted axially from underneath and connect two rotating drums. In low speed mode they are removed and refitted radially connecting the outer drum to the static partn of the machine. Hopefully this addresses the problem and you are able to see what is wrong. A full explanation would require drawings and diagrams.

If the set up that Chris L above has suggested doesn't work then the problem lies with the fit of the reduction gearing. The build instructions stated the joints involved were to be loctited but either one or of those joints is now probably slipping

I had exactly this problem on mine drilling holes approaching 20 mm diameter and you could hear churning noises from within the gearbox. I wrote up my fix in MEW 315
