Thread: Artificial "ivory"
12/01/2023 23:08:53

It is alright turning bone but if anything like turning antler then a nice day with the shed/workshop door open is advised and a fan blowing across the piece aiming at the open door. Boy does antler stink when being turned.

Pen turning suppliers sell the Ivory substitute These are some but may be a little on the small diameter size there are others that sell bigger sizes

Thread: Polishing Filler in Cast Iron?
01/01/2023 09:21:16

I have used ali, copper and brass powder in epoxy as in this pen. How cast iron will react with the epoxy I do not know so best to try mixing a small amount and just let it set before using it on the casting.

Hi, one I read to other day.

Why can't Penguins fly?

Because they are not tall enough to be pilots.

Regards Nick.

Ahh but yes they can. My brother inlaw told me when he was serving down on the Falkland islands that they do when they stand on a land mine.

I think the problem of leaving it there for any repair other than fuse replacement will entail the use of a PAT tester and someone qualified to use it.

Thread: Slow Speed Grinder?
04/12/2022 20:39:19

The one I have like the Tormek you can dress the stone to have two different grits as well as being water cooled which is ideal for the chisels as Jason said to aid keeping them cool on the opposite end there is a leather coated wheel to strop the chisels to a very fine cutting edge. Not just chisels but planer irons. With the various attachments axes scissors and other tools can also be sharpened.

I use this along side my normal bench grinder which is ideal for fast metal removal when reshaping tools. I also use this one to sharpen my wood turning tools but they are sharpened little and often as some woods take the edge off very fast and the finer sharpening of the slow grinder is not suitable for those tools except possibly the skew chisel

Hi Dalboy, thanks for your interest. Unfortunately my grandson isn't 'into' anything really apart from Lego. He does like to 'design' things on paper, like submarines but actually building boats or submarine models would tax his ability to stick at something. I like the many suggestions like a Roman Ballista from Dave Halford or Hannah Fry's electric motor. Let's hope for reasonable weather to be out in the workshop over Christmas!

Well there is also making Lego men out of wood I don't have plans but I made these pair nothing to difficult the only part that needed turning was the head and the features were burn on with a pyrography machine but they could be drawn on. They stand about 6" tall

Well, thanks so much people, for an amazing selection of ideas. Just to answer Dalboy's question, I have a good metal workshop with lathe, milling machine etc. but my wood workshop is limited to a good bench and hand tools, no wood turning lathe. I too saw the Hannah Fry prog and that was an excellent demo of a simple electric motor. I think that from all the ideas we will be able to fill the time very profitably! Thanks again to all. David

The second part of my question was what is he into the reason I asked the questions was that I have many plans of things to make a lot of them are free to use so copy right is not a problem. The others I would not be able to share as they are under copyright

I think what may help is to know what machines you have and which tools he will be allowed to operate. Also what is he into.

I may be able to help if you can answer those questions. Remember that anything that needs gluing will need time to dry as well as some finishes if you intend to apply any.

Thread: A whole lot of not a lot...
02/12/2022 10:11:19

The only time I sit in the workshop is when I am milling a long (Time) job on the mill or marking out at the bench as I have arthritis in the spine, unfortunately I just can't sit when using other machines in the workshop. I just have a simple stool for that part it also comes in handy as a small table to put things on when working.

.....or drop hints that with an "XYZ" widget, I could spend more time in the workshop, whereas without one I would spend more time in the house instead. Might receive a positive response !!

Take it from me that does not work I am now at the end of redecorating the bathroom.

The up side is Her in doors has ordered some very nice presents for the workshop so there is a bright side having to decorate

I had a cheap height gauge which I was not happy with and also went and brought the same as you, so far I am very pleased with it and it is nice to have a case to store it in. My old one did not have the fine adjust which meant I kept going over and under the measurement not now with this one

I've got 2 of these 80W tube heaters **LINK** in my double garage sized workshop. The thermostats are just cracked open and keep the workshop above 10C. Rust isn't a problem (except on free cutting steel which rusts if you look at it).

Rod

That is what i use just going to buy a second as a single was fine in my old smaller workshop
