Thread: What is it/they called?
27/10/2019 18:41:28

It was the lack of knowing what the type of handle was called that made me start that post but now I know it has helped with a search.

Even the most common things can throw me if the name is not immediately at hand

Thread: Broken Handle
27/10/2019 16:03:14

Thank you, everyone, for the responses. I did think of just a round bar drilled and filed for the square hole. I have a wood lathe at the moment and have turned a Ali pen on it using carbide-tipped tools so maybe have a go with that. It would be no difference as using a graver (not sure of spelling). dscf1300 (1024x516).jpg

Also now I know what they are called can look for them on the web.

I have a cross slide vice which I use on my pillar drill. I brought this second hand with one of the handles broken. I moved it today to make room for another job on the drill press and managed to break the other one so now I have two winding handles broken.

Can members suggest where I might buy them from or will it be a case of having two made? I am not set up to do this myself yet.

Many thanks in advance

Thread: Metal stock
24/09/2019 21:05:45

Thank you all for the replies. Looks like I will go with the writing on the piece as and when I know what stock I buy. I have used the masking tape on some wood pieces I have but only to mark the thickness and width unlike metal I can mostly identify what woods they are.

23/09/2019 00:19:29

When you buy metal and have to store it how do you do so as to keep all the same metals together or do you use a colour system to identify what grade type of material it is or maybe write on it.

Using airbrushes can be an art in itself. Have used a number of them to produce different effects on some of my work.

Many times when painting anything is when two different colours are required and you need to mask off to give a clean line between the two colours a small trick I use is paint the first colour them when dry mask off and then with the original colour spray along the mask line let dry and gently rub down then apply the second colour this gives a crisp clean line.

If using an airbrush aim across the masking tape and not at the edge as the paint can be forced under the edge .

There are some very good videos on u tube about airbrushing mind you there are also some bad ones just need to sort them out

If as you say they will be made from Aluminum and you have a woodworking router you can buy router bit for that purpose but it will take several passes as most of them are designed for thinner material

Thread: What Did You Do Today 2019

One was of a better quality, the next cheaper one showed clear signs of ‘corner-cutting’. But the cheapest (about a quarter of the cost of the most expensive example) was very likely not even worth that quarter! The internals were so poorly made and cheap that the machine was not likely to last very long at all

It may surprise you that even some well known brands do not last very long.

A while ago I was on a course and was told by the instructor that the drill their company produced has a working life span of about 1/2hour as it was a DIY model and many DIY'ers would only use the drill for 2 minutes at most at any one time and this may happen only a few times over the period of the guarantee and will not add up to the.

Having said that many of that brand have gone on to give great service.

Thread: Woodworking Router

There are proper aluminium cutters available for wood routers the smallest I have seen so far is 3mm from Trend.

i run two old Bosch POF500A routers the small ones both of them are a fixed speed I don't have any problems with burning except on occasions on Oak.

If you have a deep cut to do try doing it in stages as well as if you are removing a large amount of of the sides.

You can get router bits as small as 1.6mm.

Look fir a router with a 1/4" collet unless you will need to do large cut with larger router bits. 1/4" is pretty standard here in the UK

Interesting, I've dropped him an email to see if he stocks blanks suitable for guitar bodies.

I don't know about bodies but THIS place has wood for guitars.
