Thread: Chester Super Lux - Motor Failure
09/12/2018 17:51:07

img_4312.jpgimg_4311.jpgOnly just had chance to take a look. Powered on and worked 4 or 5 times. Enough to think will set a job up to mill couple of slots in an arbor. Got job almost centered and it stopped again.

Took left hand capacitor lead off junction box and put meter across capacitor connections on junction box (no reading), tried across capacitor leads no reading. Meter set to 20 ohms scale, displays a 1 when nothing connected sand still displays a 1 when connected across the junction box or the capacitor.

Loathe to try live electrical test as no one else at home at present.

Pictures of junction box, electrical circuit and motor plate below.

Thread: Require a .8 Metric Pitch Thread
26/11/2018 19:58:12

Jason,

I will suggest my colleague gets either his eyes or thread gauge tested.

Brian,

I've just found the little page that came with the gears from John S which had those details on it. But thank you just the same.

JasonB

You spotted the problem, my colleague checked it this morning and realised that he had boo boo'd and that It was a 1mm pitch not a .8. So thanks all for the ideas not actually required in the end but useful to file away at back of mind for future recall (if I'm lucky). He has in fact cut the thread, screwed the insert in and I now need to give it a quick blast with the MIG welder (whilst it is pulled up tight into collet holder, prior to being bored out to take a MT3 taper. The MT3 blank arbor will then be bored and tapped to replace the Int 30 arbor on Lenz Boring and facing Head

Regards,

Colin

Thank you Brian. This is only for an adaptor to go in back of a 5C collet which will then be welded in and bored out to MT3.

I need a .8 metric pitch thread. Can this be achieved on a Myford Super 7 with fitted gearbox. I do not have the Metric quadrant or gear set.

I do have the 33/34 teeth John Stevenson gears but they do not appear to give .8 pitch.

TIA

I know that my mains voltage tends to be high. I have a UPS that regularly held the voltage down as it was experiencing voltages greater than 250v.

I have put pictures of the existing capacitor and motor junction box in my album, For some reason they will not add to this post.

Les, I do not know how to check centrifugal switch. Picture of junction box is in my album

I tried the mill this morning and on second attempt it started.

The capacitor is a CD60 250volt, 150 microfarad.. Other than Hong Kong does anyone have any suggestions as to where to find similar sized capacitor.

Thanks,

Colin

Using my Chester Super Lux mill today for a couple of house. Working quite happily no issues at all. Stopped whilst checked a couple of dimensions, hit start and all I got was a humming noise. Nothing tripped out, no smells smoke or anything like that.

Although had machine for around possible ten years I guess it has not done more than 20 or 30 hours work in that time.

Any one any idea as to what might have failed.

Took another 10 bags of leaves to tip. 50 bags so far. Spent afternoon and evening fitting a shelf to the top of the splashback on the Colchester Student. Centres, running centres, chuck keys, drill chucks and keys, drive dogs all have holes to sit in. Just have to cut some ali brackets for the QCT holders.

Have now managed to get gears in the hinged drawer in the base, cleared part of bench and cleared the top of the headstock.

Having parted with a Myford 7 yesterday have been able to have bit of a move around and tidy up a bit more.

Thread: Lenz LPA 1s Boring Head
06/11/2018 14:47:19

I can see that the shank on the head is threaded . I have a possibility of obtaining a Lenz LPA 1S but it is on an Int 40 arbor. I want to be certain how it comes off before purchasing it. Can either of you two gentlemen tell me how it is removed.

Thanks,

Colin

Thread: A New Golden Age of Model Engineering Exhibitions
22/10/2018 14:37:44

All the organisers do things a little different to each other. At the Bristol show it was nice to be able to go upstairs and see all the model planes and other related stuff such as the flying simulator and dedicated helicopter area. These are not particularly "my thing" but I can certainly appreciate the effort and care (and expense) that has gone into the models and enjoy walking around.

The bit I really liked was the ability to see models (in particular) model i/c engines being run outside. I am trying to build an Anzani 'Y' engine and to see Mike Coles Anzani running was brilliant. It gives an incentive. H&S must not stop all these live activities.

Some of the groups who might want to display models are not necessarily official clubs (e'. I/c engine builders group) and they should be encouraged.

There was one stand at the Midland show where a guy was using a 3D printer to make model "steam type" engines. Its still Model Engineering.

Personally I think need to get other model disciplines involved, so as to get greater footfall. If this means merging shows then so be it. Better a merged show than NO show. A number of the trade suppliers will cross boundaries into other hobbies.

Thread: 3 phase
19/10/2018 19:05:21

I've put three phase into two properties. The last one was in the late 80's. The three phase supply runs up the road and is 6ft - 7ft below ground level. It runs just inside my property line. I was able to dig a trench across my lawn and under the drive and then tunnel under the garage/house foundations. I dug a 6ft x 6ft x 7ft down to the three phase cable to expose it. I was doing this in mid October, digging by floodlight every night after I got home from work. Had lots of funny comments from people when they realised there was someone down the hole digging. All they saw was heap of soil flying out of a hole.Laid a heavy plastic duct (supplied by the Electricity Board) and then fed the three phase cable through it. Ran it up wall to Meter Location and put up my own Distribution Board. Ran a Single Phase to my house Distribution Board. The Electricity Board turned up, terminated cable at Meter, I put the tails into my Distribution Board and they then cut open the three phase cable and soldered the new cable to the main feeder. All done with it live. IIRC it cost me around £500. The previous one was at my Dad's house for our lathes and milling machines, I did all the same work and it cost even less.

A friend of mine has just had the same thing done but he had to have a JCB a the nearest 3-phase was in a field about 100 yards away. Cost him a little more.

Chris Evans 6,

Who is your local stockholder. I know you are in KIngs Bromley and not far from me. I buy some stuff from Tamworth Steel (usually Black flats 50mm x 3mm) but never asked about their off-cuts bin. Will give you a call next week.

Thread: What did you do Today 2018

Yesterday went with friend of mine to assist him with delivery of a Myford Super7 he had sold to a buyer in Sheffield.

Lovely wet day to load onto and tie down on trailer, lovely wet drive up the A38 and M1, nice and wet to unload on a sloping wet road then get up a rough concrete path into garage.

All went well, didn't drop it, no injuries and buyer very happy. Engine cranes, pallet trucks and chain hoists all came into their own.

Now got Midland Show to look forward to on Thursday

Thread: Ethernet question
07/10/2018 13:36:28

pgk,

I take you have now used the Powerine devices and all is ok.

Have fun,

Colin

06/10/2018 22:41:10

As far as I am aware, the powerline devices only need to be on the same phase, I don't think that being on a different ring main will make any difference. So you could plug one Powerline device in next to your central router and patch it straight into your router and put the second one in your barn.

I have in the past had Cat5 cables running at over 120metres in length. I should state these were not installed by me I was checking other peoples work. They worked, but would not provide PoE over that distance, there was just too much power drop.

I have had cables fail on attenuation when tested and sometimes just a simple re punch down can correct the situation, and in some cases ensuring that the untwisted bit of the cable is kept as short as possible on all pairs. On very odd occasions the data outlet itself was the problem and swapping it out cured the problem.

If the cable has been badly kinked this can also cause issues. In 28 years of installing Cat5 cable I have only once had a faulty drum of cable. I had run 30 plus cables round an office, using 3 drums of cable and found on testing that every third cable failed testing on one pair. Luckily the customer was understanding, was not using the faulty pair and did not intend staying in the offices for longer than 3 months so was happy for me to leave it as was rather than rip it all out.

Thread: Fly presses - weights and capacity
06/10/2018 22:12:45

I run two fly-presses in my workshop both fitted with different tooling. Both are fitted with Hunton Bolsters, one is normally set up to punch 5mm diameter holes (either in 1.5mm or 3mm aluminium, the second is set up with radius punch and die for usually cutting 3/4" radius on 1.5mm or 3mm aluminium.

I also have a 10 ton hydraulic press I made up over 40 years ago. This is made up of heavy 'U' channel welded up into a frame. It uses a 10 ton Portapower hydraulic ram. This has removed an refitted lots of bearings, e.g. axle bearings on half-shafts.

I have used the hydraulic press to bend heavy stuff but normally use a 24" folder.

The fly-presses are heavy and need two people to lift onto bench and also need well fixing down. Would not be without them, but I must admit 800+ operations in a day on the flypress does not do the shoulder any favours. Luckily this does not happen very often, once or twice a year.

Thread: Ethernet question
06/10/2018 21:58:15

Is the router in the barn getting any power. I don't fully follow your description. Does the second router use Power over Ethernet (PoE). You mention a 'power joiner' where is this located and how does it get its power. What model is the router at each end.

As you have power in the barn another option would be to use Ethernet over Power connectors. These devices are quite cheap nowadays. e.g. TP-LInk Powerline devices can be obtained for around £25 to £35 for a pair. Plug one in power socket at each end of run and then connect one end to main router and second device in at opposite end.

I have in the past seen some very interesting Cat5 connections made by electricians, e.g. six runs of cable all terminated together in chocolate block connectors, giving a star effect, cables have been lengthened using a proper joiner but the cables have not been matched up correctly, multiple data outlets connected to one cable, cable run parallel to the mains with no shielding for up to 50 metres. It pays to double check what has been done.

Also as NIck says above, has the correct cable been used. Many people (including a lot of IT guys) do not realise that you use different Cat5/Cat6 data plugs depending on whether you are using solid cored cable or the flexible multicored cable (ie. cable used for flexible patch leads).

Thread: What did you do Today 2018

I had the same situation with one of my hard drives. Luckily all my pictures and docs were backed up but for some reason my videos were not added to the backup. Also lost were a number of work files, although I could cope with the loss of these. I was more peed off about the dive videos I had taken on Thistlegorm and other wrecks in the Red Sea. I sent it off to one of the specialist, knowing it could cost be around £500 but they were unable to retrieve any files after several weeks. Luckily it was a case of only pay if they get something like 75% of files of the disk. So did not cost me anything. All photos are now held on a mirrored pair of NAS drives. Each drive set of as a RAID 5 set. So data across three drives and an automatically switched in hot swap spare drive. All other stuff is up in the Cloud.
