Thread: Making workshop lighting from recycled standard lamp |

Ah right then. Thanks for that. I'll re-wire up the control box. |

Thanks Steve I suspected as much. I've got a 12v battery charger I can test it with then.

The metal standard lamp in the lounge has now been replaced. It had an uplighter and an angle poise reading light. Taking the unit to pieces for the metal I realised that the angle poise lamp could be recycled into a lamp for the workshop.
The two lights in it were run from a control box that allowed for dimmable control and may have reduced the voltage.
Before I wire it up to the mains and possibly blow it up I thought I had better ask if folks know whether I need to connect it up to a lesser power supply
The bulb in the unit is rated as 50w G-6-35 halogen
Thanks

Only been to Harrogate for the last two years as my first toe dipping into the world of ME. Stocked up on tooling and material. Thoroughly love wandering about, looking at the stalls and the models and chatting to people. Hope to get to the Midlands one for the first time next month and have high hopes for there. |

I run a 1hp lathe and 0.5hp mill/drill from digital inverters. Each has a 1kw inverter and they are connected to the consumer unit in series as I only use one at a time. Edited By John Coates on 01/09/2011 07:36:18 |

Rob
I would not be discourteous or impolite on here as I gauge the appropriate behaviour as not including that. There is one motorcycle forum I frequent where it is far more vicious, intolerant and obscene but that is there and this here and my respect for the people on each is different. I have been on that forum since 2003 and am one of the more senior members but them's the rules on that forum where any moderation is opposed with venom and so it doesn't happen.
Sensitive individuals or those whose sensibilities are easily offended should not go on THAT forum

Internet forums are not gentleman's clubs or debating societies. If you venture there then I think you have to accept its rules may not be in line with your own.
The removed nature of assuming a personality behind the anonymity of a keyboard imbues people with a sense of power and protection which perhaps may explain why behaviour changes and words and thoughts that are not usual may be exhibited.
I know ths is the fact and I accept it because I want to use the internet and know I cannot change what it has become

Hi John, can you tell me if you recive the following fine,
Yesterday Ch12
4 Music Ch18
ITV4 Ch24
Russia today Ch85
These are channels in the same mux as Film 4, could you also tell me which transmitter you use, and your rough location.
Thanks Rob.
Hi Rob None of these are on any of the sets fed by aerial 2 through the booster/splitter but they are on aerial 1 feeding just the plasma.
Having looked at the two aerials there does seem to be a small degree of difference in their alignment.
I am in Scunthorpe and I think we get the signals from Belmont and Emley Moor
Thanks

Thread: Office Laminator - Benefits in the Workshop |

Forgot to add
The reason for getting one is exactly the same as Steve
I produced tables in Excel for the screw cutting change gears for my lathe, the RPM at different Hz for the 3 phase motors attached to inverters on the lathe and the mill, and the RPM for cutters of various sizes on the mill
Once laminated they are available immediately and don't soak up oil, sweat or cutting fluid like paper only ones seem to do

I bought a hot and cold A4 one last week from Poundstretcher who now have them down to £10
It was reduced from £25 to £20 on the item ticket but was advertised at half price in a flyer in the local weekly free paper. It was still marked at £20 on the shelf but it scanned as £10 at the till
Don't know what it performs like as I'm waiting to get some laminating pouches

Have you tried retuning the the offending receivers. Sometimes this is necessary when they have completed a switchover as channel allocations are changed. Worth a try if not already attempted.
Cheers
Martin
Yes Martin. Re-tuned every TV or box after the changeover. |

Anybody else in the Yorkshire/Lincolnshire area lost Film 4 after the switch over on Wednesday 17th last week?
We have two digital aerials both installed by the same installer at different times. The first solely feeds our digital plasma TV. The second goes to a booster/splitter which feeds five rooms. Two rooms have TV's (one flat screen LCD digital HD, one normal CRT with a Freeview recorder box). These last two cannot now get Film 4.
Think I need to get the installer back and get him to check the aerials but just thought I'd ask if anyone else had this happen

Jesus David that was so over the top I am genuinely surprised at your reaction
I'd posted about my experience with Freesat HD which I believed contained some useful information and relevant to the topic but now I find it has been the subject of your high handed strop
Obviously we can only talk about stuff that blister finds acceptable
Absolutely appalling and unforgiveable. The worst moderation I have ever experienced in all my years on internet forums

Thread: What rpm for a 60mm face mill and slitting saws? |
16/08/2011 23:30:57 |
Hi all
Got myself a 60mm Sandvik Coromant indexable face mill from ebay but am not sure what rpm to run it at in my mill
Same issue with slitting saws - what speed should I run them at? After almost blunting one after it got very hot I need to know how to avoid this in the future!

Thread: What happened to the Myford sale thread? |
16/07/2011 09:12:08 |
As a newbie of less than two years the decision of how much to spend on a lathe (and then mill) was a key consideration. I decided to buy second hand in case I didn't like it or wasn't very good. As a result I spent just over £700 on a lathe and a mill and they are suffering the ham fistedness of my learning journey.
Once I ventured a little further and began to consider what might be next new machines cropped into my mind. I can honestly say the price of a new Myford took my breath away. It is the price of a new motorcycle or small car. In my newbie state I just didn't expect them to cost that much. It was a real eye opener.
Once the sale is over I will ask what the future alternatives are going to be
Good luck to Myford in achieving the maximum from the sale

Thread: How to clean a bandsaw |
16/07/2011 06:32:54 |
I've been corresponding with Ian (ex- Dragon Saws now tuff_saws on ebay) who does a mixed pack of 5 (different tpi) for £35.35 posted.
His advice is:
"14tpi would be the best option with possibly one or two 18tpi just to see the difference and which you prefer.
24tpi will cut ok as well, but because it's a fine tooth pitch then it tends to be a slow cut and the teeth will go blunt a lot faster than a blade with the proper tooth pitch. When blades are new, the teeth are pretty sharp and for metal cutting the tops of the teeth need to be slightly rounded to get the best out of them, so the first five to ten minutes of cutting should be at a slow feed rate just to run the blade in and not damage the teeth. If this is done, then the blade cuts better and lasts longer."
So I'll be buying a pack from him
I'm amazed the rather blunt 24 tpi that is on it managed to cut through the piece of 15mm plate I tried (on edge) as a test ! Having found the drive pulleys mine is on the slowest speed though

If it is the 64 1/2"blade screwfix do it as well.
Would these be either Starrett Bandsaw 64½ x ½ x .025, 14 Regor
Starrett Bandsaw 64½ x ½ x .025, 10 Regpresumably this means 14 or 10 tooth blades? If so which should I buy or one of each?
