Thread: Warco WM 250V power feed stuck/crash
21/06/2022 21:11:42

Sorry to say I haven’t actually looked at it’s operation so my post may be a red herring

Again speaking of the 290v but the 250 will be similar, the parts diagram shows the feed gear attached to the end of the cross slide screw so I think if you do indeed over travel away from the operator the feed screw nut will hit the gear and lock up?

Well new lathe has been back on the bench for a few days all going great until today when I was doing a power fed facing cut and the whole cross slide jammed up, I had done at least three identical cuts with no issues prior. Any ideas what could have happened.

With me, if something could go wrong it usually does

Hold on, so you were facing towards the middle & it jammed up, if your 250 is the same as my 290 if you travel the tool too far away from the operator doesn't the cross slide screw just come off the nut? Not sure if you have a DRO which might have jammed.

Mike, you are not actually measuring the spindle run out but a 'ground spindle held in an ER40 collet chuck, with a backplate screwed onto the spindle.' I suggest you remove the collet back plate & check for run out on the spindle outside register & internal taper, not sure about the ball race rotating at half spindle speed though.

Thread: Info' that might be of use to Warco Lathe owners.
20/06/2022 20:52:17

Do you know what, the lathes are obviously copied from European models maybe Emco & the build quality is shocking in the extreme but they do cut metal & my Warco 290V also cuts parallel. cheeky

PS my inverted vee ways are not 90 degrees so not sure where they touch each other or what the angle is meant to be, they must rely on 'point' contact only!

Chris you are quite right .0005" is neither here nor there but the guy asked a question. BTW even NASA & NPL should only use tight tolerances where appropriate.wink

Is it axial or radial run out?

Thread: Edge finder lubrication
20/06/2022 13:40:54

In another recent thread I posted this:

One of my books gives figures for some locating methods, unfortunately not all of them.

From worst to best:

Cone into hole (how I do my rotary table) - ±0.005"
Wiggler needle - ±0.003"
Laser pointer - ±0.002"
Electronic Edge Finder - ±0.0005"
Mechanical Edge Finder - ±0.0002"

Interesting how good a mechanical edge finder is, ten times more accurate than a laser pointer! But laser pointers are designed to find cross-hair markings or centre-punch holes, which an edge finder can't do, and a laser pointer is quicker and more accurate than a wiggler needle, which I also depend on.

Note how difficult location inaccuracies make it to work accurately in tenths!

Dave

I personally doubt a mechanical edge finder will repeat to .0002", in my book the most accurate method is to 'split the edge' with a DTI, & in reality .001" or under positional tolerance is jig boring territory.

You do not need to lubricate an edge finder, as said before it will attract dirt.

Unless our education system has changed which is possible UK students do not use a ‘bar’ on a 7 , but hey just for fun I occasionally do 😉

The red patch on the photo implies to me that the pinion hit the bed so I suspect that something like a circlip or grubscrew holding the gear shaft in the gearbox was missing and it worked its way outwards from the gearbox.

That makes sense, also about 5 teeth damaged to various degrees.

Try a diamond segmented blade, the performance is streets ahead of discs but not cheap.

Tony

I don't like them at all for cutting anything metal, and I use them for a living.

Edited By Pete Rimmer on 05/06/2022 12:27:12

Sorry I missed we were only talking about metal cuttingsad So, try a diamond segmented blade, the performance is streets ahead of discs for cutting stone but not cheap.

Iv'e watched a fair number of his videos & he seems fair enough in his tests, not sure if he is sponsored, that would be a big no no on his type of reviews.

I was scammed by a Chinese seller for an item that cost about £20, the seller sent an item that was worthless and not even related to what was advertised, PayPal sided with the seller and refused a refund.

Sounds like half the story - surely Paypal must have give a reason for "siding with the seller"?

My experiences with getting refunds from Paypal may be too few to be statistically significant but in all cases Paypal seemed to be almost "falling over itself" to give me my money back ... I certainly got the impression that it favoured the buyer.

My experience with Paypal has been positive in the main, normally if goods don't turn up.
