Thread: Myford VMC mill
25/08/2022 08:27:01

I have a Myford VME mill so slightly larger table and I can't see any way of lubricating the spindle bearings, I also replaced the overly stiff original belts with a linked type with great success.

As SOD said gas and oil prices are not in our control, I can't believe people don't realise that as the media has been harping on about it for months now. There are no quick fixes this time guys and a little cliche from the forces 'fail to plan, plan to fail', governments of all colours have failed to plan for energy security over the last say 25 years so we are now deep in the mire at the mercy of every tin pot supplier of gas/oil etc.

I know the peasants[US] have always been shafted but this energy price hike has gone to another level of criminality! There seems no way realistically to extract ourselves out of this pile of s**t which we have constructed for ourselves and the latest informed opinion is that IF the government helps out people to pay their bills the cost of energy will just keep rising, think on that tonight as you drift off to sleep.surprise

QCTP holders can work loose especially if they are poorly made which a lot of them are these days.

Use the collet holder nut to apply force on tubular packing between nut and spindle nose. Colin

I gave this a go, I found an odd backplate that came with a lathe that happend to have the right ID and screwed it up above the collet nut with a couple of milling clamps as spacers against the spindle. I got it pretty tight but had to hold the belt drive on the top of the spindle to stop it rotating so this limited how much force I could put into it. No joy unfortunately.

Try doing the same thing again. Leave it for a while under pressure then, still under pressure, add more force by giving the drawbar a clout. Also more force can be added by givng the collet nut spanner a good clout to create a shock load. Colin

Light side tapping will assist.

Placed it on Facebook market place, and had a dealer come round who said he would buy it for the asking price but he could not collect until the following week. In that week I turned down other interested people. And yes you knew this was coming, the dealer did not turn up. However out of the blue another chap turned up and offered half the asking price and could take it away same day. I put it on eBay, and it’s now in Burma. Dealers on the whole are robbers.

My obvious question is 'why didn't you ask for a deposit from said dealer'?wink

I don't know if its a reflection of society as a whole but just lately this forum has started to descend into a really sour, cynical place. It's rather sucking the joy out of a place I certainly used to enjoy and come to for respite from the outside world.

Sorry Jon I'm as guilty as the rest, it's because we are discussing the many frustrations of life, perhaps we should all stick to model engineering and the like?

I really hope the green activists are able to contain their disappointment when we get to net zero in the UK and nothing in the way of climate has changed. The population will be poorer, will travel less and still be staring at parched fields and swollen rivers. Our 1% reduced to nil is really nowhere near enough when China this year are commissioning 30 new coal fired power stations. The media never seem to explain the whole picture, the science and the politics of it all. Instead it is micro stories of Man glued to Road etc. I have given up wondering Why.

P.S. China operates over 3,000 existing coal fired power stations.

Edited By NR67 on 17/08/2022 11:00:17

If this attitude is what the UK population wish to have then the UK will no longer be a world leader, we need to show the rest of the world how to solve the climate problem not wait until they decide to show us.

Lead from the front, and they will follow our world class example. Isn’t this how the Great was put into Great Britain.

Edited By Juddy on 17/08/2022 11:23:36

I suggest we are leaders in sweet FA atm except maybe population growth. AND the Chinese don't work that way, they do what ever they please and damm the rest of us!

This is a rescheduled parcel payment request scam. Details on EVRI website of the Parcel scam

Beware. regards

Never ending cycle of scams, whilst people still fall for them they will still be around. Just heard yesterday that the idiots at Luton borough council gave £1000000 to scammers and it's nobodies fault, words bloody fail me!

Is this the privatisation of the NHS creeping in ?

The NHS obviously isn't working in it's present form so needs looking at and the answer is not just billions more cash, I can't imagine that will happen in our lifetimes.

Many thanks for the responses. It does seem I have purchased a length which is just within tolerances so it will have to be consigned to the stockpile. I will order some 5/8 inch stock and machine it down.

The supplier by the way was the Bay of Evil.

As far as I know eBay don't supply anything?

Thread: Do you "still" enjoy driving?

Posted by Peter G. Shaw on 16/08/2022 11:16:52:

Well, I see my original thread has effectively been resurrected, so a few more comments for discussion. Perhaps!!!

Anyway, I notice a trend to complain about caravans clogging up the highways. So, let's suppose I'm on a fairly level single carriage way in England and assuming I'm travelling at my legal speed limit, which is ??? Now suppose I'm a hgv driver on the exact same road travelling at his legal limit. Or a coach/bus driver. All three types of vehicles actually have the same maximum speed limit of 50mph, so why the opprobium leveled at caravans? Would people complain about the hgv or the bus?

  • Is this true most coaches/HGV's I see are doing at least 70 MPH?

Moving on swiftly...

Finally, the A66, Penrith to Cockermouth. Not a bad road, usually fast (ish), single carriageway, 60mph (or 50mph with a caravan (which we weren't by the way)) but we caught up with someone doing exactly 40 mph. No more, and no less And the traffic density is such that overtaking is somewhat fraught due to oncoming traffic. We were unable to overtake until we hit the short dual carraiageway section at Keswick. There really is no need for that sort of behaviour. That road is arguably the main feeder road into the northern Lakes and the West Coast industrial towns and therefore is not really a touristy type road. Why on earth these people cannot see the queue behind, and then pull over into a layby, I cannot understand. Sorry, rant over.

  • If you follow these 40 MPH clowns for any distance you will soon realise they are crap drivers in all respects.
  • Then again we are all getting older & even the fighter pilots amongst us will slow down.smiley

Hell that is a big lathe for a beginner! All I can say is be careful, don't wear gloves of any kind [some people use vinyl or latex but I haven't used anything whilst operating machines in over 40 years of machining] and wear safety glasses at all times.

Thread: CO2 - Dumb question
14/08/2022 12:27:15
Posted by Anthony Knights on 14/08/2022 10:33:07:

When I was a lad, the population of this country was about 42 million. There was a "pie" called the country's resources, of which we all got a slice. It is now said to be 65 million (that's the ones we know about). Consequently, every body's slice of pie is now smaller, even though it's still bigger that that of third world countries.

It is an inescapable fact, that the more people there are, the less there is to go round. Be wary of making quips about "Logan's Run and Carousel" as you could be nearer to the truth than you think.

Successive governments have continuously put off doing anything about ensuring secure and reliable vital services such as water and energy for this country. The can has been continually kicked down the road in the hope the next lot will deal with it. We have now reached the end of the road and the can has fallen off the cliff at it's end. No doubt we will be shortly be getting a statement from our new Prime Minister which be loudly accompanied by the sound of slamming stable doors.

Spot on Mr Knights!

Lot to be said for walking a mile in another mans shoes. Regards Ian.

Very much agree.
Reckon a day as a courier delivery driver would make many desk-jockeys appreciate the cushy life they have sitting on their rumps.

Are we meant to feel sorry for the couriers who do a crap job? One of my worse jobs ever was as a 'desk jockey' with a vile bullying manager sitting right next to me for 8 hours so not all cushy.
