Thread: Hardenable free cutting steel for clock pinions

I've used EN24T previously with great success using Thornton cutters and left it in it's natural state after polishing.

Thread: 1960 mains electric clock

Gerry, You could rewind it so that it works on a lower voltage and use a suitable low voltage mains transformer (bell transformer) to power it. I've done that a few times to avoid using a quartz movement.

Thread: Garador door closer
15/07/2023 19:45:43

Thanks John.

I eventually solved my problem by putting it on a timer where it was turned off early morning every day before it was needed so effectivley reset every day and it worked well for some months until the plastic chain tangled itself up and that was the end of that so bought another off ebay.

Handy things---when they are working!.

Thread: Household paint. An observation!
08/06/2023 11:05:31

Neil, a search for water based elastomeric membrane paint produces mainly masonry type paint--do you have a brand you used?

An enquiry to Mike Wye has confirmed that KREIDEZEIT is not suitable for our project so the search goes on with Sandolin to be investigated..

The project BTW is a 100+ yr old wooden station building that needs repainting after being treated with spirit based preservative . Ordinary gloss paint soon cracks as the building is subject to full sunlight and it would be good to find a longer lasting solution.

Many thanks for the info, Peter

Jelly---I have the same problem with exterior paint cracking/pealing etc and needing doing fairly soon so I am interested in your approach.

Ive searched "Kregzdeit" but it seems to be mainly exterior cement coated wall type I have found---what am I doing wrong?

Thread: Syncronome Clock magazine article
12/05/2023 19:39:38

Many thanks Duncan, got them all of and look really useful reading. The latch in the book Electric clocks and chimes looks very similar to the one on the clock, perhaps this was an older style latch.

I'm really amazed how much info I've got in such a short time----many thanks to everyone on the forum

Many thanks everyone---now got access to the Elliot Isaacs files so I've got some dimentions to check---at last!

Mick B1. You clock look nice. Used to have a Hipp Toggle GPO clock like that but replaced it with an English Clock Systems master which has never been as reiable!

Thanks, can access Synchronome 1 messages easily from my groups but not files as my subscription is not yet approved---fingers crossed.

Thanks everyone. The impulse ramp looks different to other clocks when I search around also the latch arm which the "escape" wheel trips to drop the gravity arm. Sorry, cant rotate the 2nd pic!

Thanks for the offer Duncan---shall I PM you?

I've been trying to get a syncronome master clock going as an occasional project for a while. Previously repaired them with great success. The clock is set up according to instructions I've found and everything works as it should but as I suspect it was a home built version from Syncronome supplied castings I'm getting suspicious of some of the dimensions’ and detail.

I believe that Elliot Isaccs described building one in Engineering in miniature but cannot find it. Does anyone know of the issues or have access to them?

Thanks Peter

Thread: Simple PCB layout software
17/01/2023 19:03:18

Last batch of 10 boards (double sided) I got from pcbway cost a total of $9.04 including Global Economy Shipping which took a couple of weeks to get them here with no further charges.

Cost seems very reasonable if the boards are less than 100mm x 100mm

Thread: DM542 Stepper driver
17/01/2023 08:40:26

Many thanks for all the replies. Thought there was something basic I'd missed.

Driving it from an Arduino Nano and ended up using 2000ppr as its very smooth and working out at the right speed..

I read the recent posts about TB6600 drivers with interest and why there were two 400pulse/rev settings.

On a machine I’m playing around with I’m using a DM542 driver with a Nema 17 motor and it runs cool, smooth etc.

My question.

The DM542 got all the usual multiple pulse/rev settings ie 800, 1600 etc but in addition it has lots of others, see pic (apologises, couldn’t rotate pic?)

These range from 1000 pulses/rev to 25000/rev---are they aimed for a specific use?

I always thought the basic 400, 800 range etc was possible as it used multiples of the stepper motor windings?

Finally, I’ve got a Nema 34 motor I want to drive can anyone recommend a suitable modern driver?

Thanks Peter

Thread: Simple PCB layout software
16/01/2023 14:15:28

I've been occasionally making PCB's since the Dalo pen era and find it quite rewarding to prove a layout on vero etc and then make a PCB.

With the advent of half decent computers I spent ages playing around with most of the free programes with varying degrees of success but the recommendation from an ebay PCB miller I used was that I really needed to improve as he was virtually re-doing my PCB’s before he could work on them!

He used Sprint-Layout and although it cost 40Euro’s suggested it would be a good investment on the time saving front alone. I took the advice and doing PCB’s has never been easier as it generates Gerber files and outlines for milling as well and the Chinese PCB makers turn a board around from the files generates very quickly if you want to go that way.

So I’m pleased I spent the money---sort of encourages you when something works as it should without fighting back!

Thread: Wind Turbine
06/12/2022 08:02:59

Thanks for all the replies. I've been to the CAT a few times over the years and always found it interesting and inspiring even in the times before climate change became a recognised issue. I also got the literature from Hugh Scoraig a few years ago which convinced me they needed a steady supply of wind to generate anything useful and it was a no go for me.

What I see is a lot of interest around small vertical axis machines, which are not so effiecient, on Utube and the like and also lots of 500w+ verticalaxis amchines on Ebay and just wondered if any of the MEW crew had tried one or even knew of one which worked hence my original post,

Thanks once again Peter

Thanks John,

I've seen lots of articles like that over the years but it was more of the prctical experience and just wonderered if anyone had experimented with a smallerish one bought or otherwise?

Peter

05/12/2022 13:25:06

Hello,

From all accounts they are not regarded as feasible but just wondering if anyone has built (as an experiment perhaps) or bought a smallish wind turbine, vertical or otherwise?

Iv'e looked at them over the years but never found anyone who had tried one and what the results were like in a typical UK rural location?

Thanks Peter

Thread: Reverse direction of shaft driven by toothed belt.
28/08/2022 12:17:07

Thanks for all the suggestions.

The motor drives the first shaft, and that shaft then drives the other shaft which is which is the one that that I want to reverse so I can’t just reverse the motor.

It’s only a 10mm belt so low power but it needs to be reasonably tight to avoid timing issues.
As it’s stepper motor driven had considered using another stepper and synchronising them on switch on but sounds complicated!

I see some reasonably priced Delrin change wheel gears on eBay, which looks like the solution.

Peter.

28/08/2022 10:37:43

Thanks. It’s shaft driven by a shaft then the motor and never seen a twisted toothed belt (intentionally anyway!) before so assuming it’s not possible but just checking in case I’d missed something.
