Thread: Silver solder or braze ? |
11/05/2010 09:33:25 |
Reading the articles in ME, anything and everything appears to be silver soldered. Can't you braze instead, specifically when building a boiler?. |
Thread: Marking out fluid |
04/05/2010 09:42:42 |
Thanks all, looks like the felt tip marker wins. |
03/05/2010 10:18:38 |
Does anyone know where I can get marking out fluid in a quantity less than 1 litre. |
Thread: Darjeeling Saddle Tank 0-4-0 New series starting in ME 4378 |

Neil, Probably Coalbrookdale as the 0-4-0 at Bass Museum is complete. |

I've always had at the back of my mind an idea of building a brewery loco from Burton on Trent. They were nearly all 0-4-0 saddle tanks. This series will give me an idea of how to build the tank and secure it to the boiler. |
Thread: Do you get what you pay for ?. |
24/04/2010 09:57:03 |
I need to buy a set of 3mm taps. My local engineering suppliers quote £17. Two model engineering suppliers quoted £5.56 and £3.50. Do they represent value for money or are they a false economy. |
Thread: Re-wiring a forward/reverse switch |
08/04/2010 10:46:54 |
Reverse is "normal" i.e. rotating downwards towards the cutting tool,
and Forward is "wrong" ie. rotating upwards I always thought it was the other way round, ie. Forward is "normal" |
Thread: Wheels |
28/03/2010 10:42:02 |
If you don't need the axles, drill the ends of the axle undersize of the diameter of the hole in the wheel and the axle should collapse. |
Thread: ME thread cutting |
25/03/2010 10:25:11 |
Are taps and dies commercially available to cut ME threads eg,5/16 x 40 tpi.? |
Thread: Slip Gauges |

Have you looked on E-Bay. I bought a set for £30 from an engineering company that was closing down |
Thread: Thread notation |
06/03/2010 11:54:32 |
As an engineer I am used to referring to threads as 1/4 BSF, 3/16 UNF , M4 etc.
Why do model engineers refer to threads as X TPI. When following a drawing the last thing I want to do is keep referring to thread data charts to find which thread is being used. |
Thread: Drawing projection, first or third? |
24/02/2010 11:30:47 |
I would have thought ensuring the dimensions were correct and non missing to be more important than which projection to use. By the way, how were you able to make a " sample component " if you didn't understand the drawing ? |
Thread: Hexagon holes |

As David suggests, drill with Dia. = AF size. Heat up the gear and either use an Allen Key or a nut. Grind the end of the Allen Key flat so you end up with sharp corners and reduce the length of the Allen Key to give a workable length. |
Thread: How about a section on material sources |
04/02/2010 09:37:02 |
For small items you need an engineering supplies company such as Buck&Hickman |
Thread: Spindle Speed |

Have a look at this.

Thread: Crompton Parkinson Motor Bearings |
25/01/2010 10:39:13 |
A 20mm Dia bearing is 0.767", 0.006" bigger, would this press fit into the housing. |
Thread: Rack locomotive of 1812 |
25/01/2010 09:03:36 |
The end is turned down for the 6BA thread but from a 3mm Dia. bar, so where does the 5.5mm come from. |
Thread: Speed and feed rate for 1 1/4" Carbide Index tool? |
23/01/2010 11:13:07 |
Look at these for info on speeds and feeds Oh, by the way circlip, weld the machine to a metal table, bolt table to a concrete plinth. QED. Edited By Eric Cox on 23/01/2010 11:22:00 |
Thread: Rack locomotive of 1812 |
23/01/2010 10:04:35 |
The drawing and photograph of part 33 (piston rod) shows the rod being 3mm dia. with a 5.5mm dia lip. The text says the end should be turned down to form a shoulder. Which is correct. |
