Removing Wheels from Axles

Hi Everyone
I have a set of wheels for a 5 inch gauge locomotive and would like to take them off the axles, can anyone help, what tools i need and how to perform this task.

If you don't need the axles, drill the ends of the axle undersize of the diameter of the hole in the wheel and the axle should collapse.

You need to check whether or not the wheels have been keyed in place - if they have been correctly quartered and tried out with their rods this may be the case and makes the job more difficult and the wheels more difficult the reuse.
If they are keyed then I would take Eric's advice and drill out the shafts
If they are not you could make up a split wooden collar that supports the back of the wheel close to the hub, mount the whole assembly vertically and try knocking the shaft through with a brass rod that is near but under the shaft size. When I had to do this job I preheated the wheels in boiling water to lessen the grip of any loctite that may have been used - they all came off OK

Can you beg borrow or steal a good hydraulic press? Someone in your club may have one. All that tony says is very good but a press makes it all a little gentler. Mark then for position prior to removal if you want to reuse axles so that they will all go back on the same axle. I've done a few as well as many trucks. always find the press fit ones the easiest if they have loctite I put them in the press put a little pressure on and apply the torch to the back side until they let go. be sure that you don't have any pressure on the rim as you will break a spoke. Perhaps some one in your club will help if you were handy you could pop round and I would do it for you. good luck
