Thread: shoe sole glue
16/08/2018 12:31:44

I have used Evo Stick and Bostik Clear Contact Adhesive for my good ladies and my shoes. Spread adhesive to both surfaces, leave for a few minutes to get tacky then clamp firmly, especially around the edges, and leave for 24hrs. Has always worked for me.

Thread: Welding issue for a newbie
12/08/2018 19:19:11

Hi

I can't see a damaged transformer in your latest pictures, however there is a relay that has contacts which are showing some signs of distress and this has blackened the clear plastic case above them, normally caused by contact arcing. It may be worthwhile removing the relay case and try to clean the contacts. Contact cleaning tools are or were readily available and normally have a thin blade that has diamond dust or similar impregnated in it. Used to be used for cleaning contact breaker contacts on cars.

May improve things but there again mat do nothing but worth a try and its easy to do. Power disconnected of course.

Cheers Martin

PS

Judging by the pictures the fuse looks to have been subject to serious over current when it blew. The fuse link, copper wire, has a wide rupture gap and there is melt back of this link. It would be interesting to see if a replacement fuse suffered the same fate, if so that may be why some idiot used aluminium foil as a replacement be it a stop gap measure or not.

Thread: Fly Press Struggles
07/08/2018 13:40:38

While this doesn't help with regard to the fly press would a hydraulic press be more effective. You can get 12 ton presses around £85 and 20 ton presses around £110. If the metal is near red heat then I suspect it would deform reasonably well with no risk of a double impression. The only drawback is that the stamp would be in contact with the hot metal for a little longer, whether that matters or not I don't know.

Just a thought.

Thread: kitchen fan speed control
29/07/2018 16:52:45

I suspect that the fan motor is split winding synchronous motor and I as far as I am aware you can't use a triac speed controller with this type of motor. The rotor will want to rotate in sync with the rotating field generated by the field coils and while they can be run with a certain amount of slippage it is not ideal. Hopefully another member of this forum who is more knowledgeable regarding motors and control will give a better explanation and if I am wrong will correct any error.

Thread: Website Spellchecker
29/07/2018 16:33:08

I, a little while back, complained that the spell checker seemed to be biased to the USA spelling of certain things including sulphur and sulphuric acid; it was determined to use 'f' instead of 'ph'. However I was corrected by two erstwhile members of this forum and informed that the 'f' version has now been accepted and the 'ph' has been consigned to obscurity and old timers memory lane trips. If you just happen to be interested you can find it towards the end of the 'Sulphuric Acid' thread here. Being an Old Fart I will continue to use the now outdated spelling with the 'ph' and assume that 'There is no F in Sulphuric Acid'; which, as it happens, is almost true with the latest government regulations.

Thread: Bushes Jim, but not as we know them.
18/07/2018 00:47:50

Ian

What sort of bushes are they and how big have they grown? If their root systems are close to the surface then it may be relatively easy to locate/expose them and then cut them with an axe or saw. I have removed bushes using this method and cut the roots and stumps using a cheap sabre/reciprocating saw I got in ALDI a while back. Skittled a couple of long wood cutting blades in the process, hitting stones and other bits of rubbish, but they are cheap enough, even the branded ones i.e. Bosch

Thread: Macgregor digimac transmitter receiver crystals 3
15/07/2018 11:32:28

Hi

There is a copy of the manual for the Digimac system here. This gives data on the crystal numbers re their frequency and for No. 3 crystals this is Tx 27.020 MHz and Rx 26.550 MHz. As Neil says you probably don't need branded Macgregor crystals its just the frequency you need to verify. The difference in frequency between the crystals is defined by the receiver IF strip frequency, in this case 470 KHz which should be standard across most manufacture's systems at that time. Unless he desperately needs to operate on channel 3 then any pair of crystals desinged to work within the 27 MHz band should be fine.

Hope this helps

Martin

PS

A modern list of Tx frequencies is given here and from this it looks like Channels 6 and 7 are the closest modern equivalent at 27.015 MHz and 27.025 MHz respectively. However looking on Ebay it would appear that this has not been universally accepted and that the crystals on offer refer to an intermediate channel numbering system, the nearest offered units would appear to be T8/R8 at 27.025 MHz as listed here.

Double post

That's the way I see it from the method I used to determine the difference between the two set ups. The driven shaft will have to turn faster to maintain the same speed with the 5.25 ratio and 25.6 OD tyre. It would be similar to running in a lower gear all the time.

MartinW

02/07/2018 23:13:14

James

The 19.1 tyre OD with the 3.23 ratio for 1 rev of the input shaft will move 18.58 in.

The 25.6 tyre with the 5.25 ratio for 1 rev of the input shaft will move 15.32 in.

The difference between the two is 18.58/15.32 = 1.21. So the drive shaft will be rotating 1.2 times faster for the larger wheel with the 5.25 ratio compared to the smaller wheel with the 3.23 ratio to achieve the same speed i.e. if for the smaller wheel arrangement at say 30 mph the engine turns at 1000 rpm then with the larger wheel arrangement it will have to run at 1210 rpm.

I think this is correct and hope it helps.

MartinW

PS Potentially better acceleration but lower top speed for the 25.6 tyre with the 5.25 ratio diff.

Thread: Sulphuric Acid
23/06/2018 11:02:30

Robin, MichaelG

Thanks for the heads up re the 'Newly' adopted spelling of sulfur (yeuk) but like Robin I find that the new spelling just doesn't look right. Robin, 'S's and 'Z's is another bugbear of mine while the Z might be more phonetically correct I prefer the S version. Languages evolve and no doubt our predecessors would be horrified by my/our use of their language!

Cheers

Sulphur rules OK

23/06/2018 00:05:31

I thought this regulation change re sulphuric acid had been covered pretty comprehensively in an earlier thread. Isn't it bloody marvelous one spells sulphuric the correct way and the site wants to correct it to sulfuric.

Gripe over.

Thread: Meteor detecting
18/06/2018 11:33:55

I think you'll find that the SKY dish in Neil's picture is mounted as per normal and that it looks to be pointing down is an optical illusion which is partially due the fact that one can see the LNB support through the perforations in the dish, again standard for dishes in order to reduce weight and wind resistance. I agree that it is an offset axis dish, in the vertical axis, which means that the dish itself can be mounted more or less vertically and not at some angle approaching 30 deg, a space saving arrangement that makes installation easier and more compact.

Thread: Soba Precision Drill Vice
11/06/2018 00:50:56

The description on the packaging/box for this series of SOBA vice reads:- " Manufactured from graded cast iron these vices have a precision ground base.........". There is no mention of jaw accuracy or anything else and at approx £48 probably isn't a bad buy. The jaws look as if they might be ground and have the ability to hold round stock both vertically and horizontally. I have seen a lot worse for the money, my door stop bears witness to that.
