Thread: Free sources of materials.?

Next time you stop at Mcdonalds ( for the kids you know !) for a snack.

The coffee sticks make excellent epoxy stirrers and there's no limit to the number you're allowed!

Sadly John Boddy at boroughbridge sold up and then closed down.

If you're in North Yorks then Duffields at melmerby are a good source. Also Scawton sawmills near Sutton-under-whitestonecliff. Further away there's Snaiton. Or at Doncaster there's Turners retreat.

Styles and Bates, down south do mail order and come highly recommended.

However ply and laminating as per Jason would be your best bet I think.

If it can wait and you're local the Northern Woodworking expo at Harrogate is on 20-22 November and there's always a good choice there.

Glad to see this thread has been resurrected.

Today gave a friend the nozzle for her NG10 blow gun to use to make decorative flowers in paint . This comes after Mick Hanbury ( skilled wood turned, demonstrator and all round good guy) showed me his cobbled together version and I thought he needs a better solution. Now done 3 for him and he's happy. Made a couple for me and now one for another friend.

Tonights mission to finish 6 over caps for her live centre to use during demo's. It's nice having skilled friends to learn from.

Today I enjoyed a day with Les Thorne , another skilled wood turner. May have to make a large ring centre to see if his pepper mills can be made another way. That's the joy of this thread, and clubs, you get inspiration to try new things.

BTW Very dis-chuffed as during the lunar eclipse we got fog! So the photo's on here have been very enjoyable.

Must get round to working out how to put photo's up! But life's so busy already.

Off to the workshop.

Regards to all

Ian

I painted my floor with garage paint, then put 18mm chipboard over it ( warmer on feet and kinder to dropped tools!

I also use the rubber backed floor mats on the bits I stand at for a long time. Big advantage is you can atke them to bin, roll into tube and knock to dislodge swarf into bin, works for me anyway.

I use 5ft fluorescents overall and spot light by each machine but I do like the sound of those flat panel type light. We're being re lamped at work with LED's so I'll see how that works out then decide.

Put more power sockets in that you think you'll need and a central ceiling socket is also useful! If you wire a shower on-off pull cord switch to the ceiling socket it's easy to control.

Thread: Flame fast hearth

I did this job a few years back as no gas in vaillage. I use a caravan regulator on the propane and vary gas with tumbwheel on the torch.

I asked Flamefast and they part exed the old torch and 3 phase compressor at a fair price. It really is just a jet change.

The air flow is fairly constant and you vary the amount of gas. Gives a "generous" flame and sounds like a banshee but oh boy does it work !

Thread: NG10 blow gun Thread- any idea?

Well, when in doubt ask a friend to have a shufti at it!

Thanks Alan!

Very, very close is 3/8 x 26tpi Brass! This fits extremely well. I guess they used it because the casting is alloy ( sort of Merzac type metal not pure aluminium for sure.

Have now made my nozzles and am off to have a play.

Thanks one and all for the input.

JD - I know I could just lash something up and make it "universal fitting" with a BSP fitting but you know how some things get under your skin and you want to know ......? Mind you if I'd had to buy a die for it I might have been less sanguine about it.

fascinated by your bee logs. Eldest son is desparate to try bee keeping but not correct temperament I fear ( too gung ho by half !)

What do you do with all the wax? I admit to bias as just had a great presentation by a professional wood turner who uses bees wax in a finish - looks good- semi matte !

Thread: NG10 blow gun Thread- any idea?
06/07/2015 21:57:42

Visually it looks very close to BSP (compared to a tap) but the 1/4 bsp die nut (Presto) is a no go!

across crests of threat its 9.8mm, I'll have a look at American NPT with the thread gauges , as that's very close. to 1mm pitch but only 5 threads to measure over!

All this to make an adaptor to fit a fine nozzle for a specific wood turning job.

Many thanks for all the suggestions folks

05/07/2015 22:02:57

Looking at making an extension tube for an NG10 blow gun- common enough item and I assumed it would be 1/4 BSP thread ( as the air line fitting which goes into it is ) but no.

The closest match I can find is M10 fine ie 1mm pitch but the thread profile is wrong according to my M&W thread gauges anyway.

I tried all the whit and even UNF but nothing truly matches!

Anyone got any clues on this?

Thanks Ian

Ketan

although I personally am unlikely to invest in one ( unless SWMBO wants to curry favour for something?? or a lottery win?) I was extremely impressed with John and the machine at Harrogate.

The speed and accuracy were exceptional! Even a damaged end mill ground back then renewed (Thanks John!)

For the immediacy of use the cost benefit of it becomes viable. I waited to get a drill sharpener as I though I "could buy a lot of drills for the money", then discovered that breaking/ blunting size needed meant a 3 day wait to replace (bank holiday). Suddenly the benefits exceeded the costs and I duly bought one. No blunt drills now!

Thanks to you and John for bringing this to market and opening up the debate...

I did however order some Stevensons blocks as my reward for being so good at the show.

re microwave dismantling. You get some very useful large circular magnets in the microwaves magnetron ( large lump with finned rod sticking out of it.

be warned however the magnets are apparently made with some unpleasant metals in them. If it cracks don't get dust / splinters in skin ( apparently quite toxic).

I found they work brilliantly inside a plastic drum as a swarf collector. handle through middle of magnet secured with UHU glue- cut hole in lid of plastic container. magnet in base of container- collects swarf, hold over bin, retract magnet further up container - swarf drops into bin!

Had a good day, walked miles. Eldest son loved helicopters flying, RC trucks and planes. Could have used some more seats around the place. Good chat and lots to photograph ( that's tomorrows mission!).

Hadn't got any major planned purchases but was "inspired" to save on a few baulbles..... etc, etc.

Glad some one mentioned silver solder must visit CUP tomorrow! Forgot that!

Is John S trained in CPR or mouth to mouth?

Visited Harrogate to "save a fortune" - well that's what women say in shoe shops isn't it????

The youthful Mr Stevenson kindly sharpened up some cutters for me ( he was doing a roaring trade!) . John"Doubleboost" was there so got to meet another good guy.

Tomorrows payback time- taking father in law ! Must be worth some points from SWMBO.

Couple of impressive electric gliders ( might have to get mine out of loft and dust down now summers coming)

No signs of our enlightened editor (Neil) ? Ketan put in a guest appearance.

A good day but could have done with some more seating area inside!

Had an acquaintance who made a racing yaucht in his dining room. Intended to take it out via the patio doors however there was a bit of miss-measurement shall we say so he ended up having the ceiling acro-propped and removing then replacing the wall!

His wife has ( just about) forgiven him.

So you going to Harrogate then Graham?

And the Scotsman will no doubt reciprocate???surprise

See you Saturday.

John Stevensons machine looks every bit as capable in the metal as it were. It can even sharpen FC3 cutters.

John looks more statesman like in the flesh!

One of our old chemistry teacher demonstrated using "thermal shock" to cut glass tubes at known points . Bit hazy the memory but it worked! Wouldn't want that to happen en suite as it were!

Can you not use a steel bucket?

Thread: Metal Rack
01/03/2015 20:23:24

John

How about 2 x H shaped racks at right angles to wall- cut stock into max 5ft lengths to store on this.

If you angle the H frame slightly with shelves sloping SLIGHTLY sideways it will auto feed the stuff down to hand, having hooks at end of a frame arms to retain it. Plate etc can then be stored over the racks on boards( Glass reinforced ply is very strong and doesn't easily break so should be safe?

If you have the saw located at the end of one of the lower frames you could even use the frame to support the bar being cut -just haul out to length?question

Then as Brian said you can have a matrix of 4" dia tubes to store smaller off cuts.

let us know what you decide ( and why for us all to learn)

regards Ian

Well started with a blow out- Rose Berry Topping ( end of Cleveland way ) in a mild gale. Grit was being blown off the (wet) ground into your face as you went up the steep bit still sons/dogs/wife enjoyed it and hot coffee mid way was refreshing.

Making a large ( 13"-cos that's how long the bit was) rest for the wood lathe to indulge in a spot of metal spinning. Hand tool made , hardened ( I hope!) and polished. Got to round over the edges of this rest on the mill, but car in way currently, so job for the weekend.

Must get new MEW tomorrow!

Hi Ralph

welcome to the fun!

I joined the York club as recommended by a friend who advised me on a few things engineering wise as I hadn't a clue ( not much change there as yet!).

Yes there are always Cliques in any society but don't be put off. There are loads of generous minded friendly individuals who will always help / answer questions. You choose who you associate with in any organization, remember you will only get out of anything as much as you put in.

I have been in several clubs, both model and otherwise and "there's always one".... so just ignore that one and move on. Locomotives provide lots of engineering experience which is directly transferrable to other aspects of the craft.

The clock guys in York leave me dumbfounded with their skill but one guy recently built a wooden clock that amazed even them- that's right Jack I mean you !

Go along and judge on how YOU feel, if you tell people what part of the country you're in them maybe able to assist some more.

Happy New Year one and all Ian

Incredibly bright Cree t6 torch, zoomable 2200lumens. Going to be of use wood turning and peering into things! Also dog walking and SWMBO has announced she would like one , as have both sons, having played with it!

Also 7mm brake allen key, I didn't believe it but in my "modest" ( _ SWMBO views it differently sad) collection of allen keys I had no 7mm one! Why Volvo chose 7mm ????

R C helicopter for son may prove interesting I think!

Merry Christmas one and all!
