I quite agree with Mike superheaters at this scale are a waste of time. Mark P. |

16/07/2013 19:22:48 |
Had my WM16 for about 6 years, replaced 2 sets of brushes in that time. It has done a lot of work some of which has seriously tested it no sign of gear stripping.I also fitted an extra cooling fan.Still going strong. Mark P. |
Thread: Plans and prices. |
30/06/2013 14:35:52 |
I'm afraid that the real world is the problem, people are expecting and willing to pay over the top prices for things, and do you really need A1/A0 sized drawings? I recently bought a spiral book of fully dimensioned drawings and construction notes/photos of over 100 pages all A4 and very readable for building an air rifle for £25. If more people said no I'm not paying that much just watch the prices fall,as I said before I don't expect something for nothing I am willing to pay a reasonable price. On another tack the prices that ME suppliers charge for materials seem to me to be more than I would expect, OK small quantities will be more than bulk buys but instead of buying for example 300mm of 12mm steel bar why not buy 1000mm a local engineering shop, they are more than willing to sell it to you at a fair price,or even a well known Internet auction site? Mark P. |

I still think that they are over priced, when the initial scale plan has been done and have saved it as a computer file the printing cost is negligible, you could print off 1 or 1000 copies in not much operator time or could they not be sold as a PDF download thereby saving the printing cost? OK someone has to scan them but I feel as they are mostly from the original blue prints/drawings that is not particularly labour intensive to re-scale them, this is only my opinion. Mark P. |

Why are plans and drawings so expensive? I realise that you have to pay for the copyright and such like, and for someones time to do them in the first place, but after all they are only bits of paper, and considering the amount that must have been sold surely they should be getting cheaper.I don't expect something for nothing but £50 + for what amounts to some sheets of paper I feel is extortionate a few quid seem to be more reasonable. But maybe I'm wrong. I favour WELLSEAL as it sticks like the proverbial to a blanket and seal very well when used with gaskets. It doesn't completely set so be ware. Mark P. |
Thread: Suffolk dredging tractor boiler. |
29/06/2013 19:02:14 |
Hi all, does anyone know anything about the boilers used on the Sufolk dredging tractor? I know that they are center fired and have a central vertical chimney but can't for the life of me work out how they work and how they tubed. I assume that they are tubed. Also what other boilers would be suitable for this application.I am considering scratch building something similar. Regards Mark P. |

Thread: Anyone wear Vari-focal specs? |
14/06/2013 22:05:45 |
I've worn vari-focals for a few years soon got used to them, but I find that I cannot see if things are straight and level.Things seem to have a very slight bow in them.I have got round that by asking the wife "is that straight?'' But apart from that I have had no problems. Mark P. |

I must do the control box mod (ie put it on a stick) to my WM16 George, mine is the early model with the box bolted direct to the head make using the quill lock hard as it hits the reversing switch. Mark P. |

I made and fitted a set of indexing buttons for my mill vice no more clocking it up everytime I use it. it seems to run true to within .0002" over 5.5" which seem quite good to me! Like the vice stop George I have been planning one of those for sometime but not got roundtuit. Regards Mark P. |

I found that the guard on my WM16 interfered with the use of my vice and various other fixtures I use, so I took it off, I also deleted the micro switch,as there is only myself that uses it there is no problems.I did the same with the guard on mw WM250 I find that the guards cause more problems than they are worth just keep hands and any loose clothing clear of rotating parts.
